Volunteers Upkeep Early D.C. Boundary Markers
In the late 18th century, the architects of the nation's capital set the boundaries for the new city via a series of stones that were placed around its perimeter. Today 36 of the 40 stones that were set are still in place, most of them surrounded by small fences that were erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution at the turn of the century.
A group of volunteers spearheaded by the American Society of Civil Engineers set out to tidy up some of the stones and their fences.

USA: WASHINGTON: PRINCESS OF WALES VISIT UPDATE
English/Nat
Hours after being feted at a White House breakfast with Hillary Rodham Clinton, Diana, Britain's Princess of Wales, took lunch with the British ambassador to Washington.
It was the second stop for the Princess on a private though high-profile visit to the United States, her first trip abroad since her divorce from Prince Charles became official.
The highlight of her schedule will be a fashion-led charity dinner at the White House Tuesday night, attended by top designers and celebrities.
Sweeping through the White House gates in a limousine Tuesday morning, Diana proved she's still every inch the crowd-puller America has long adored.
Cheered on by well-wishers, Diana arrived for a breakfast hosted by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The fashion-led event was attended by host of America's top clothes designers but all eyes were on the guest of honour.
Dressed in a business-like navy, pin-striped long jacket and skirt with a single row of pearls and matching earrings, the Princess also wore her famous sapphire and diamond engagement ring given to her by the Prince of Wales.
Sharing a platform with the First Lady -- fashion designer Ralph Lauren, American Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour, and Washington Post proprietor Katherine Graham.
Diana sat somewhat shyly as Hillary Clinton sang her praises.
SOUNDBITE:
I want to welcome all of you and particularly our guest of honour, Diana, Princess of Wales. I was thinking as I met her in the Blue Room that this is one of the nicest British invasions that the White House has ever had. The other one as some of you might remember from history burned the place down but now we have the metaphorical equivalent of that excitement here at the White House.
SUPER CAPTION: Hillary Rodham Clinton, US First Lady
The event, in aid of breast-cancer, is Diana's first visit abroad since her divorce from Prince Charles became official and sends a signal to the world at large that she intends to stay in the media spotlight.
Diana was back under the media microscope Tuesday afternoon as she changed venues for the second function of the day.
This time, lunch at the impressive Lutyens residence of British ambassador to the US, Sir John Kerr.
The building is next door-but-one to the Brazilian embassy compound where Diana is staying with her old friend and confidante Lucia Flecha de Lima, wife of Brazil's ambassador to the US.
But unlike the morning's affair the press were kept waiting for a photo opportunity - Diana remained out of sight to the press as her cortege of limousines swept through the gates.
Retired General Colin Powell was among the lunchtime guestlist of 22.
A small crowd of onlookers waited at the gates to catch a glimpse of the guest of honour,.
SOUNDBITE:
Um, we planned to do a day trip down here to see Princess Diana, since I have been a big fan for many years and have been following her since the Royal wedding and I thought that maybe this is my big chance to finally get to see her. After having this little baby, I wanted to see if maybe she would do a walkabout and maybe the baby would get to see her and get a picture - but it was just as good when she was driving in to see her - she's beautiful.
SUPER CAPTION: Maria Polelink, bystander
As the cortege left the embassy the bystanders and press were rewarded for their patience when Diana briefly stopped before making her way back to the Brazilian embassy.
The high-point of the Princess' visit is a celebrity dinner and auction at Washington's National Museum of Buildings Tuesday night in aid of a breast cancer charity.
And despite all the big-name guests, Diana will again be the focus of attention.

STORYLINE:
On January 21st Barack Obama created a new chapter in American history by becoming the first African-American President, taking the oath as the 44th commander-in-chief before exultant watching millions at the US Capitol in Washington DC, and across the country and the world.
In his inauguration speech he described the nation as in the midst of a crisis, whilst also pledging to leave Iraq, and offering to extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist to international foes.
A vast, excited crowd of more than one million (m) were witness to the transfer of American power like none before it.
Obama assumed power over a country longing for change after former President George W. Bush's eight divisive years in the White House, an era that witnessed the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and the Pentagon, the beginning of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and an economic collapse not seen since the 1930s Great Depression.
Speaking to a massive crowd that spread across the nearly two-mile (3-kilometre) National Mall from the Capitol towards the Lincoln Memorial, Obama recalled the words of George Washington, America's first president, and enjoined Americans against faint-heartedness in this winter of our hardship.
As he moved on in his speech from some of the country's most difficult domestic challenges, Obama promised the world a new America that listens to all voices.
But he vowed to spare nothing to keep America safe, addressing terrorist foes directly.
Meanwhile former President George W. Bush returned home to Midland, Texas to an enthusiastic band of supporters.

STORYLINE:
Members of the Rolling Thunder motorcycling group roared into town for a White House visit on Sunday presenting US President George W. Bush with his own cowhide vest jacket and pressing him for increased veterans benefits.
Mr. President, we'd like to make you an honorary member of Rolling Thunder, said Artie Muller, the group's executive director, to a delighted Bush, who shed his suit jacket to don the vest and pose for pictures.
For 21 years, Rolling Thunder has led a Ride for Freedom along the National Mall during Memorial Day weekend, a full-throttle demonstration in support of soldiers held captive or missing in action.
On Sunday, riders began at the Pentagon, rode across the Memorial Bridge and gathered at the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial.
Rolling Thunder members also revved their engines up to the White House's driveway along with several of the president's aides.
Bush, who was returning in his helicopter back from Camp David, greeted members near the South Lawn.
The group has visited the White House more than half a dozen times in previous years.
The leaders of Rolling Thunder, a group with about 90 chapters throughout America, met briefly with the president in the Oval Office afterward to discuss concerns relating to veterans' care.
On Monday, Bush was due to make remarks and place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in honour of Memorial Day.
