Korean BBQ DUCK + DMZ Spy Tour at the South Korea - North Korea Border | Paju, South Korea
On the morning of my second day in South Korea, I got to do something really cool! My group and I headed to the demilitarized zone at the border between North and South Korea!

Our first stop was the site of the Kim Sin-jo Incident, where 31 North Korean spies crossed over into South Korea with the intention of killing the South Korean president in 1968. There was a huge shootout and 29 of the spies died, 1 escaped, and 1 (Kim Sin-jo) was caught and snitched on his country. Today he’s a TV star!
Then we headed to a memorial to the chief of police during the assassination attempt on the president’s life in 1968. He’s a national hero! Then, we made our way to Bugak Palgakjeong Pavilion, which offers incredible views of Seoul. You can see the mountains and it’s chillier up there! It’s a great lookout point where you can see this incredible city of 25 million people!
Next, we took a one-hour drive to the joint security area in Paju. From where we stood, North Korea was just across the river, 2.5 kilometers away. On the North Korean side, the land is flat and all the trees have been cut down.
Inside the building is an exhibit showing plans for a bullet train that would connect Seoul and the North Korean capital and link them to Paris! There are also photo displays that detail all of the significant events that have occurred between North and South Korea between the 1940s and the present day.
Next, I headed up to the observation deck on the fourth floor, where I got a much better view of North Korea across the river. It’s a huge open area with lots of big binoculars where you can look out at the neighboring country.
Then, we headed to a military base on the border. You can’t film inside, but it was a fortified area with lots of mines. We had to hand over our passports to enter the DMZ. We were able to take photos and video in certain areas. I took some photos with the guards and filmed inside a super tight bunker. Past the bunker, we walked along the southern border where we saw some nature, some guard posts, an observation deck. Once we were done, I was given a certificate of completion that shows that I’ve been to the border of North Korea!
Next up was the DMZ Experience Zone, where we could try on army uniforms and play with some toy guns. Then, we headed to the spot where the 31 North Korean soldiers crossed into South Korea in 1968. There are statues that show what they looked like and how they crossed over!
After a 30-minute drive, we arrived at a restaurant that sells Korean duck barbecue! They cooked it right at our table. You take the duck, dip it into the sauce, and wrap it in a piece of lettuce with garlic and onion and eat it all in one huge bite!
The duck was nice and fatty and super tender. It had a really nice, smoky taste. The sauce was so good, I could eat it by itself. There were also some incredible glass noodles and delicious mushrooms.
My favorite side was the thick seaweed, but there was also some kimchi that we cooked until it became more pale. It was all so good, especially the vegetables! Every time we’d had something in Korea, it was different from the last!

Visitors flock to Paju, one of the closest cities to North Korea

The city of Paju captured the attention of the world when it hosted the historic inter-Korean summit.
Curious about the region that is just south of the demarcation line separating the two Koreas,... a growing number of visitors have been flocking to the area.
Our Park Hee-jun was there to turn the spotlight on the various tourist attractions. Paju city in Gyeonggi-do Province is close to North Korea, both in terms of distance and history.
And within the city limits is Imjingak-- a village built in 1972, a couple of decades after the Korean War armistice was agreed. Imjingak is only about 7 kilometers away from the Demarcation Line.
“This village stands as a symbol of hope-- hope for reunification between the two Koreas. And after the 2018 inter-Korean Summit was held nearby in Panmunjom, more and more people have been visiting the area.
Following the summit, the number of visitors to some attractions has nearly tripled. It's a popular spot for those wishing to get a close-up understanding of the two Koreas' history, but it's also a great destination for couples and families to take some time off and relax.
Especially the last day there was this meeting between these two presidents. So now I was feeling that it was a good time to know more about this situation, this political situation.
Hopefully there will be more exchanges between the two Koreas through roads and railways, so that I can also visit Baekdusan Mountain.
And thanks to the soaring numbers of visitors,... restaurants and cafes in the area are also seeing better business.
Sales are 2 to 2-and-half times higher than around a week ago. Many people are visiting Imjingak out of curiosity from the meeting between the two Koreas.
At the village, visitors can take a trip back through history,... to the war that separated South and North.
It's one of the world's most heavily guarded borders, but the atmosphere is calm and quiet.
To boost tourism in the region,... the government plans to create more attractions and increase the city's annual festivals.
And with hopes for peace and reunification in the air,... Paju could have even more visitors in the future.

Paju, city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea near border with North Korea
Paju (Korean pronunciation: [pʰa.dʑu]) is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Paju was made a city in 1997; it had previously been a county (gun).[1]
The city area is 672.78km2,[2] and it is located just south of Panmunjeom on the 38th parallel. In 2015, the population of Paju has increased to 427,668.[2] To defend the South Korean capital, Seoul, many U.S. and South Korean army bases are set up in the city.[3] In 2002, the northernmost South Korean railway station, Dorasan, was opened. North Korean territory and Kaesong City can be seen from Mount Dora in the city.
• Cosmos is Paju City's representative of flowers growing wild in Spring. It has very strong vitality, and symbolize unity and harmonious life as a citizen of Paju City. The flowers are neat and beautiful with different colors such as pale pink and red.

• Ginkgos are large and beautiful trees which are usually planted as street trees. People can obtain high-quality wood from them. Also, their leaves and fruits are used as a valuable medicine. Magnificent view of the trees means prosperity and eternal peace in Paju City.

• Pigeons are meek and gentle with soft feathers which follow humans well. They symbolize the peace and security of mankind, and they mean to desire the unification of the Korean Peninsula and the well-being of citizens .

• The badge brings the look of Paju implicitly. Semiconductors, which symbolize high-tech industry, high-quality culture and books, and life based on the shape of the rice industry have represented the badge with the symbol Paju logo.[4]

STORYLINE
Shouting Long live national reunification, a South Korean activist who spent more than three months in North Korea without his government's approval stepped over the line dividing the North and South, and was promptly arrested on Thursday.
The stunt by No Su-hui, 68, was designed to draw attention to the division of the Korean Peninsula.
He had gone to Pyongyang from China in March without Seoul's permission, defying a law that prohibits South Koreans from travelling to North Korea without government approval, officials in Seoul said.
He was arrested immediately after his return, police in Seoul said.
Associated Press video showed South Korean officials in suits grabbing a defiant and resistant No just after he stepped over the demarcation line inside the Demilitarised Zone as South Korean soldiers snapped photographs at close distance.
On the other side of the border, soldiers and officials stood watching the melee as crowds of North Koreans waved white unified Korea flags.
Turning around to face crowds of cheering North Koreans before stepping over the line, No raised his arms and shouted Long live national reunification, by our nation itself, a white unified Korea flag in his right hand and a bouquet of flowers in his left.
No serves as vice chairman of South Korea's Pan-Alliance for Korea's Reunification.
Most tourists must enter and exit North Korea via China.

Day Trip from Seoul to DMZ, the Demilitarised Zone Between South Korea and North Korea
When visiting South Korea, one of the tourist things to do is to book a day trip from Seoul to the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone between South Korea and North Korea) or the JSA (Joint Security Area). Actually, the Demilitarised Zone between the two Koreas is the most militarised area in the world. I wanted to do the JSA tour but that one was already fully booked months in advance. So the DMZ tour includes a visit to Imjingak Park, the Dora Observatory (view the DMZ area and North Korea in the distance), the 3rd infiltration tunnel (built by North Korea to attack the south) and Dorasan Station.

The Imjin River serves as the border between South and North Korea near Paju. Imjingak is a park on the banks where a bridge causes the river and was once used to transport goods into North Korea and where POWs were repatriated after the Korean War.
