Budding cricketers in Thane have nowhere to play, as the popular Dadoji Konddev stadium has been shut since the monsoon. However, in an irony of sorts, the stadium was given out for an advertising film shoot featuring Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday.

The Athletes from this stadium top the medal haul in many competitions. In fact of athletes selected across India by GAIL India olympic for the finals few of them were from this ground.
I would like to highlight the pathetic situation of athletics facilities in Thane City in Maharashtra. Thane has a population of 2.9 million people yet, it has only one stadium which was built over 30 years ago. This single stadium has produced hundreds of national level player and few of them have also represented India internationally as well. The Athletes from this stadium top the medal haul in many competitions. In fact of athletes selected across India by GAIL India olympic for the finals few of them were from this ground. This is the only ground in Thane where an open Athletics event is conducted on a standard 400 mtr. running mud track and many of school athletics events are also conducted here. And unfortunately, the only support given by the administration for athletics is a crude workaround 130-meter single lane curved synthetic track in the tight alley between the stadium seating and fence! Most of the practise actually happens in the mud ground around the periphery of the cricket pitch in the centre.
Today even this small privilege is being taken away. Athletics is being destroyed by the authorities with a myopic view on sports. Thane Municipality has started on a plan to redevelop this stadium exclusively for cricket . As we write this letter the 400 Mtr running track is already dug up and practise cricket pitches are being built cutting across it. This will seriously hamper athletics practise. Instead of improving the facilities for sports and providing a synthetic track the authorities are putting constraints.
We fail to understand why cricket and athletics cannot coexist this stadium there are literally hundreds of eager athlete kids practising hard and training diligently to be a professional athlete and many of them are harboring a dream of winning an Olympics medal. Behind each one of these kids there is a passionate coach working as hard to help them reach that dream. Their practise sessions start at 6:30 AM every morning and 5:30 in the evening. These kids practise even without flood lights in the dark and they do not interfere with the cricket games (as they need good day light to play) and the pitches in the centre are strictly kept off limits.
We have also started an online petition on change.org and we have 2000 supporters to this issue, reading the passionate comments of many of the athletes would give you an idea of how distressing this issue actually is.
