Yangon (Burmese: MLCTS: rankun mrui, pronounced [jàŋɡòũ mjo̰]; also known as Rangoon) is a former capital of Burma and the capital of Yangon Division. Although the military government has officially relocated the capital to Naypyidaw since March 2006,[3] Yangon, with a population of four million, continues to be the country's largest city and the most important commercial center.
Yangon's infrastructure is relatively undeveloped compared to those of other major cities in Southeast Asia. Yangon has the largest number of colonial buildings in Southeast Asia today.[4] While many high-rise residential and commercial buildings have been constructed or renovated throughout downtown and Greater Yangon in the past two decades, most satellite towns that ring the city continue to be deeply impoverished.
Yangon Central Railway Station is the main terminus of Myanmar Railways' 5,068-kilometre (3,149 mi) rail network[28] whose reach covers Upper Myanmar (Naypyidaw, Mandalay, Shwebo), upcountry (Myitkyina), Shan hills (Taunggyi, Lashio) and the Taninthayi coast (Mawlamyaing, Dawei).
Yangon Circular Railway runs a 45.9-kilometre (28.5 mi) 39-station commuter rail network that connects Yangon's satellite towns. The system is heavily utilized by the local populace, selling about 150,000 tickets daily.[29] The popularity of the commuter line has jumped since the government reduced petrol subsidies in August 2007.[29]
Yangon was founded as Dagon in the 6th century AD by the Mon, who dominated Lower Burma at that time. Dagon was a small fishing village centered about the Shwedagon Pagoda. In 1755, King Alaungpaya conquered Dagon, renamed it Yangon, and added settlements around Dagon. The British captured Yangon during the First Anglo-Burmese War (182426) but returned it to Burmese administration after the war. The city was destroyed by a fire in 1841.[5]

The largest and best maintained parks in Yangon are located around Shwedagon Pagada. To the southeast of the gilded stupa is the most popular recreational area in the city Kandawgyi Lake. The 150 acre (60.7-hectare) lake is surrounded by the 110 acre (44.5-hectare) Kandawgyi Nature Park,[24] and the 69.25 acre (28-hectare) Yangon Zoological Gardens, which consists of a zoo, an aquarium and an amusement park.[25] West of the pagoda towards the former Hluttaw (Parliament) complex is the 130 acre (53-hectare) Peoples Square and People's Park, (the former parading ground on important national days when Yangon was the capital.)[26] A few miles north of the pagoda lies the 37 acre (15-hectare) Inya Lake Park a favorite hangout place of Yangon University students, and a well-known place of romance in Burmese popular culture.
Hlawga National Park and Allied War Memorial at the outskirts of the city are popular day-trip destinations with the well-to-do and tourists.

Top 5 Pagodas in Yangon
The Shwedagon Pagoda is a Buddhist temple in Yangon, Myanmar and is an important Buddhist monument. This building preserves four Buddhist relics that belonged to the previous incarnations of Buddha and is an important temple for the Theravada tradition of Buddhism and for the people of Myanmar.
The Shwedagon Pagoda, which is also called the Golden Pagoda Myanmar is the most famous destination in the whole country and attracts crowds from all over the world. This 100-meter-high structure has been said to exist since the 6th century, so the pagoda is 2,600 years old, making Shwedagon the oldest pagoda in the world.
Shwe means Gold in Burmese, and Dagon means three hills, the ancient name of Yangon City where the stupa is located.
The pagoda is much more than a tourist attraction—it is the most important religious site in Myanmar. It is also a functioning, very active place of worship. Scores of monks, pilgrims, and devotees mix among tourists at the monument.
The gold seen on the stupa is made of genuine gold plates, covering the brick structure and attached by traditional rivets. People all over the country, as well as monarchs in its history, have donated gold to the pagoda to maintain it.
The main gold-plated dome is topped by a stupa containing over 7,000 diamonds, rubies, topaz and sapphires, the whole giddy concoction offset by a massive emerald positioned to reflect the last rays of the setting sun.
Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple is the most well-known Buddhist temple in Yangon. It houses one of the most revered reclining buddha images in the country. The Buddha image is 66 metres (217 ft) long, and one of the largest in Burma.
The patterns on the feet - I believe they call it the footprint - were not something I had seen before. Well worth a visit, whether you have 10 minutes or a couple of hours to spare.
The Nga Htat Gyi Pagoda in Yangon is known for its image of the enormous Buddha sitting.
When you arrive at the temple, you will immediately be impressed with a picture of a giant Buddha statue wearing a royal costume splendidly. The lip and the nails of Buddha statue are painted red.
Kaba Aye Pagoda is also known as the World Peace Pagoda, which is a relatively new pagoda in the Yangon city. The Pagoda has become an attractive destination for visitors, especially in the pilgrimage season.
Previously, the pagoda had been hit by a boom attack in connection with the detention of prisoners during the war, so that this pagoda was named the World Peace Pagoda, as words of warning and a reminder of peaceful preservation according to the Buddha preaching.
Belonging to the same location with Kaba Aye are Maha Pasana Cave. Its name “Maha Pasana” means Great Cave of Stone – a version of “Satta Panni Cave” in India which held the 1st Buddhist Council.
The Sule Pagoda is a Burmese stupa located in the heart of downtown Yangon, occupying the centre of the city and an important space in contemporary Burmese politics, ideology and geography. According to legend, it was built before the Shwedagon Pagoda during the time of the Buddha, making it more than 2,600 years old.
The Sule Pagoda has been the focal point of both Yangon and Burmese politics. It has served as a rallying point in both the 1988 uprising and 2007 Saffron Revollution.
Shwedagon Pagoda Yangon Myanmar, Yangon city Visit by Renu Pandey
The most impressive pagoda, also known as the Golden Pagoda, is the most important place of Buddhist pilgrimage in Burma. The main stupa enshrines the Gautama Buddha's sacred relics as well as the three preceding Buddhas.
The more famous landmark of Yangon is the elegant Shwedagon Pagoda. The huge gold-plated pagoda, 99 meters high, with the diamond-studded spire atop a small hill in downtown Yangon, dominates the area and is visible from much of the city. There is a mystical atmosphere after dark, with the pagoda illuminated by spotlights.
According to legend the pagoda is over 2,500 years old and dates back to the Buddha's lifetime, making it the oldest pagoda in Burma. Historical evidence indicates the Mon founded the pagoda around the 6th century. Since then the Pagoda has been multiple times expanded and renovated, incorporating numerous smaller stupas and other structures.According to legend two merchant brothers from Okkalapa (present day Yangon) who lived in India met the Buddha about 2,500 years ago. The Buddha gave them eight of His hairs and told them to enclose them at the same spot on a hill in Okkalapa where relics of the Buddha's three previous reincarnations were buried.
The brothers went back to Okkalapa and presented the relics of the Buddha to their King who began searching for the spot. After years of searching a Nat spirit called Sularata has decided to help the King in vain. The Nat who was a million-year-old hat observed the previous three Buddhas ' visits and recalled the spot on the hill of Singuttara where the relics were enshrined. The building has four exits, all of which have either a escalator or an elevator, except for the Eastern one. All are guarded by huge Chinthes, Mythological Burmese lions with white body and golden head.
The upper part of the walls at the entrances to the complex are adorned with exquisite Burmese style portrayals of the Jataka tales, the legends of Buddha's past lives. The middle of the large complex is formed by a large 275-metre-long platform flanked by the central stupa and many smaller stupas. The main stupa enshrines relics of the four preceding Buddhas including the most recent Buddha's sacred hair relics.
Since the Shwedagon Pagoda is Burma's most sacred place for Buddhists, large numbers of devotees come to the Shwedagon daily. We walk about the stupa and make the Buddha's offerings.
There is a shrine with a Buddha image at each corner of the octagonal pagoda (one for every day of the week, Wednesday is split into two). In accordance with Eastern astrology each shrine has a planet and an animal sign associated with it.
The main stupa is the most remarkable building of the temple. It's visible from much of Yangon city at its hilltop position. The stupa is encircled by 64 little stupas.
The central stupa, which is 99 meters high, is fully covered with gold plating and enshrines the holy relics of Buddha. The center is sturdy and not publicly accessible.
On top of the pagoda is placed a seven spired hti, an ornament shaped like a umbrella with golden bells attached to it. The hti is adorned with thousands of diamonds and other rare gems.
If you're at the right place on the pagoda platform you'll see the reflection of the sun's rays from the massive diamond on top of the gold plated hti in different colors.
Largest bell in the country. Dhammazedi, King of the Pegu Kingdom, had an enormous bell cast in 1484 during the end of the 15th century. The bell, which is thought to have been installed in the Shwedagon Pagoda was the largest bell ever casted weighing nearly 300 tons.
A Portuguese named Philip de Brito e Nicote in 1608 who controlled Syria (present-day Thanlyin) as a Portuguese colony stole the Great Bell because he wanted to melt it down to manufacture cannons. Nevertheless, the raft carrying the bell sank in the river Yangon. The bell still stands today at the bottom of the river.
The Shwedagon Pagoda is located on Shwedagon Pagoda Road in downtown Yangon on Singuttara Hill, Dagon Township, just west of Kandawgyi Lake. A taxi to the pagoda from downtown should cost some US$ 3-4. Often the meter will not be used. Agree on the price first.
The temple is open every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Please dress with respect which means no revealing clothes, no shorts. Longyis (long cloth worn by the Burmese men) can be found at the ticket stand. Please remove shoes and socks, before reaching the temple grounds. Hang them at the door, or carry them in a plastic bag with you.The grounds, particularly during weekends and Buddhist holidays, can get very busy.
Admission fee is 5 dollars US per person. A guide would cost about US$ 5-10 for a few hours.

GOLDEN ROCK PAGODA and YANGON MYANMAR
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Burmese: ကျိုက်ထီးရိုးဘုရား, pronounced [tɕaiʔtʰíjó pʰəjá]; Mon: ကျာ်သိယဵု, [tɕaiʔ sɔeʔ jɜ̀]; also known as Golden Rock) is a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Burma. It is a small pagoda (7.3 metres (24 ft)) built on the top of a granite boulder covered with gold leaves pasted on by its male devotees.
According to legend, the Golden Rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha's hair. The balancing rock seems to defy gravity, as it perpetually appears to be on the verge of rolling down the hill. The rock and the pagoda are at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo. Another legend states that a Buddhist priest impressed the celestial king with his asceticism and the celestial king used his supernatural powers to carry the rock to its current place, specifically choosing the rock as the resemblance to the monks head. It is the third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma after the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Pagoda.[1][2][3][4]
Currently, women are not allowed into the inner sanctuary of the rocks vicinity, maintained by an employed security guard who watches over the gated entrance. Women are permitted in the outer balcony and the lower courtyard of the rock. for further info. -

Foreigners struggle to find housing in Rangoon
Foreigners settling in Rangoon are struggling to find places to live due to archaic laws still in place in the country.
As Burma opens up to international businesses, more and more foreigners are moving to Rangoon to work and live.
But strict housing laws regarding registration of non-citizens that date back to colonial times mean renting out property is a complicated process and some property owners are reluctant to face the risks that come with it.
