Chincoteague & Assateague History:
Assateague & Chincoteague Pocket Guide:
The late autumn is not the best time to view the ponies, but it is still possible to spot them and a boat ride at this time makes for a breathtaking view of Assateague and Chincoteague. Captain Mark has been called the pony whisperer and knows where to look for wild ponies. He is a pioneer of pony watching by boat. He is a lifelong resident of Chincoteague and his family has lived on the island since the 1800's, so he is a great source of information. Chincoteague Island, located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, is the only resort island in Virginia.
Chincoteague Island is one of several barrier islands in this part of Virginia, the largest being Assateague Island. Chincoteague is 7 miles long and Assateague is 37 miles long.

Chincoteague
Chincoteague (/ˌʃɪŋkəˈtiːɡ/ or /ˈʃɪŋkətiːɡ/) is a town on Chincoteague Island in Accomack County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,941 at the 2010 census.[3] The town is known for the Chincoteague Ponies, although these are not actually on the island of Chincoteague but on nearby Assateague Island. These ponies and the annual Pony Penning Day are the subject of Marguerite Henry's 1947 children's book Misty of Chincoteague, which was made into the 1961 family film Misty, which was filmed on location
Legend has it that the feral ponies on Assateague are descendants of survivors of a Spanish galleon that sank on its way to Spain during a storm in 1750 off the east coast, but the likelihood is that they are actually descended from domesticated stock, brought to the island by Eastern Shore farmers in the 17th century to avoid fencing requirements and taxation.[citation needed]
In the Pony Penning, which has been held annually since 1925, horses swim across the shallow water between the islands. If any animal is too small or weak to make the swim, they are placed on a barge and ferried over. All the horses are herded into large pens after running through the middle of town and down Main Street. Pony Penning takes place on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July. The actual swim occurs on Wednesday, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company auctions that year's foals on Thursday, and on Friday the remaining ponies swim back to Assateague.
The town features numerous small hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds that serve visitors to the region, such as those patronizing the beaches. The island also features many restaurants, ice cream parlors, and miniature golf courses. The island contains three museums: Beebe Ranch, the Museum of Chincoteague Island and the Refuge Waterfowl Museum

Assateague Island, Maryland
Assateague Island is a barrier island located in Maryland on the Atlantic Ocean.
Assateague Island is 48,000 acres comprised of near shore and estuarine waters. Its environment affects nearly every aspect of life as the waters and the island interact and change with its geography. The island is constantly changing as it is reshaped by the forces of wind, water and weather. The entire island is divided between Assateague in Maryland and Chincoteague in Virginia.
Exposure to salt, lack of fresh water and isolation from the mainland are conditions which have over time influenced the plant and animal life that inhabit the island.
The island was used as early as the 1600s as Colonists used the island for grazing of horses and livestock. Today the horses that inhabit the island are descendants of those early animals.
Over the years the island has been used as a fishing village, industrial site, as a network of lifesaving stations for stranded mariners and in an ill-fated attempt as a development for an ocean resort.
The island supports a multitude of wildlife including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The wild horse are the islands most popular wildlife and are joined by white-tailed deer, sika a diminutive Asian elk, frogs and toads, black rat snakes, fiddler crabs, mud snails, ghost crabs, red fox, raccoons, shorebirds, snow geese, blue crab, and fish such as spot, menhaden and flounder, to name but a few of the varied species that make Assateague Island home.
The island has a road system and parking. Visitors may camp, hunt, swim, surf, collect shells, bike, surf fish, shell fish, canoe, kayak and use the Over-Sand vehicle area by permit.
Baltimore Boulevard - in the 1950s developers paved a 15 mile road they named Baltimore Boulevard and it extended to the Maryland/Virginia State line. Land was cleared for 130 side streets and subdivided into some 9,000 building lots zoned and sold for resort development. In 1962 a northeaster storm wiped out almost everything ripping up the road and destroying the few existing structures on the island. Today what remains are pieces of the asphalt road and some signs of the clearings made for the side roads. The 1962 storm ultimately lead to the abandonment of the development in favor of the creation of a national seashore in 1965 that today is the Assateague National Seashore Park.

Wild Horses of Assateague
D'you know what a Pony Jam is? Well, on Assateague Island, it turns out to be the term park rangers use to describe the phenom where a dozen or so cars and mini-vans loaded with families grind to a halt in the middle of the main road, so as to take pictures, not recognizing that the traffic is backing up behind them sometimes for up to a mile!
At 37 miles long, Assateague Island is home to roughly 300 horses, living in two distinct populations in Maryland and Virginia. Park Ranger, Carl Zimmerman took us on a tour of the driveable parts of Assateague Island on the Maryland side. Here's some of what we captured.
