Dalian's Xinghai Square (China)
Xinghai Square / 星海广场 / 星海廣場 is a city square in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China located to the north of Xinghai Bay. It covers a total area of 110 ha (270 acres), making it the largest city square in the world. Its name literally means the Sea of Stars.
Xinghai Square was built at the centennial of the City of Dalian in 1998. The sculptures of 1000 footprints and an opened book facing the sea commemorates the vicissitudes of the city's history. Across the Xinghai Bay, the Xinghai Bay Bridge could be seen.
Around the square are high-end apartments, restaurants, banks, luxury sports car dealers and an amusement park. The Xinghai Bay beach, the Castle Hotel, Dalian Modern History Museum and Dalian Shell Museum are also nearby. Located on the opposite side of the sculpture complex is the Xinghai CBD, which houses among other things Dalian Xinghai Convention & Exhibitions Center, Dalian World Expo Center and the headquarters of Dalian Commodity Exchange.
For 10 days in late-July early-August, Xinghai Square holds the annual International Beer Festival.
A huabiao (19.97 meters high) was once located at the center of the square. It was first built in 1997 to commemorate China's resuming sovereignty over Hong Kong. It was the tallest Huabiao in China, and it became one of the landmarks and symbols of Dalian. It was demolished secretly on August 5th, 2016 at midnight. It was believed to be out of some political reasons. Local media remained silence about this, and covering reports by mainland media were soon deleted.
In 2017-11-26, Xinghai Square opened its new musical fountain at the center of the square, it known as the largest musical fountain in Northeast of China. Xinghai Square musical fountain is the third musical fountain in Dalian, the other two are in Donggang and Renmin Square.

CHINA: RUSSIAN AIRCRAFT CARRIER MINSK
Cantonese/Nat
The king-sized Russian aircraft carrier Minsk has anchored in the harbour of the Chinese community of Shenzhen.
But this vessel has come to Shenzhen to make fun, not war.
China bought the giant ship to turn it into a tourist attraction and a military theme park.
Shenzhen is a dusty boom town just across the border from Hong Kong.
Twenty years ago, this was one of the first places that communist China experimented with capitalism.
Now it's the first place in China to have an aircraft carrier, but it's not going anywhere.
It's based in a military theme park, called Minsk World after the name of the old Soviet carrier.
The nearly 28 million (m) U-S dollar park is complete with guard posts, aircraft, and a more than five hundred staff, dressed in military costume with helmets and Minsk Army insignia.
The ship itself took the Soviets five years to build in the 1970s, entering service in 1978.
A medium size aircraft carrier, it was the flagship of the Soviet Pacific Fleet.
But it's heyday didn't last long.
After ten years, engine problems left the Minsk stuck in harbour, and with the break-up of the old Soviet Union, no money could be found to repair it.
An entertainment services company in Shenzhen bought it third-hand from its Korean owners in 1998.
Estimates of the price paid range from five to ten million (m) U-S dollars.
Even if it did need work, that's a knockdown price for a two hundred and seventy four metre-long aircraft carrier, eight stories high.
But who's going to flock to see it in Shenzhen?
Surprisingly, there's a lot of interest.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
We're all interested. I heard that people from other parts of China, my friends, said they want to come and have a look, because it's the first aircraft carrier on show like this in China. Maybe in Dalian there's going to be another one, but this one is open now.
SUPER CAPTION: Ms Ding, Shenzhen resident
Ever since the Gulf War, China has been acutely aware of the need to update its military, to keep up with the U-S, to be ready to deal with flashpoints in the South China Sea, and to be able to threaten Taiwan.
Propaganda plays a large part in persuading people to pay attention to national defence.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
My country has got a strong military, and it's every citizen's duty and responsibility to ensure the safety of the country.
SUPER CAPTION: Zhu Jia-ying, Shenzhen resident
But Minsk World's management say it's not aimed at stirring bellicose nationalistic feeling.
Much of the aircraft carrier's interior is given over to a display of Russian space exploration and Russian military
memorabilia.
Given Russia and China's decade -long period of estrangement, this would hardly seem to inspire Chinese nationalism.
Minsk World's Assistant Manager has a simpler explanation.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
Shenzhen is a good place for tourism, with lots of people coming here already, so that's why we decided to set up this park here. We bought this old aircraft carrier and turned it into a museum. It's supposed to show that it's our common goal to move from war to peace.
SUPER CAPTION: Yang Xiao-lin, Assistant General Manager, Minsk World
But China's decision to shell out for a rusting out-of-service aircraft carrier may not be purely peaceful.
China has bought other ageing aircraft carriers, ostensibly for turning into scrap metal.
But military analysts say that these acquisitions give the Chinese navy the chance to examine thoroughly past aircraft carrier design.
Developing their knowledge in this way they may soon be able to build their own aircraft carrier, if they decide they can afford a new one.

Construction time lapse Feb - March 2016: New Exhibition and Conference Centre
Construction of the new Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre is proceeding rapidly now. In this time lapse sequence the building is visibly taking shape in front of our eyes.
In February and March much of the metal framework has been bolted into place starting at the front of the building and working towards the rear. Groundwork also continues, with foundations being laid in advance of the metalwork.
The second story floor and roofing support is being lifted into place by large cranes throughout March and April. An access road to the side and front of the building has been laid, speeding up movements around the site.
In April we will see roofing and cladding applied to the framework. It's all happening!

Foreigners looking for jobs in China
There was a time when many Chinese people thought that foreigners who worked in China were all English teachers. This was because back in the 90's, or even earlier, foreigners who were allowed to work in China were all experts in their fields and people didn't see them often. Now, as globalization continues, foreigners are doing all kinds of jobs in China, even becoming internet sensations. On this week's Crossover we talk about their lives in China.

AL-10XX: ReCAST
AL-10XX: ReCAST explores an aluminum artifact design process dependent on tangible physical restraints. The steps involved include: wood framing, sandcast molds, robotic burnishing, robotic scratching/milling, pouring molten aluminum, and post-production. Employing the 7-axis robot at the intersection of primordial elements and cutting-edge software, we navigated the gap between digital and analog.
Our research is intended as a precursor to future creative manufacturing processes. As we reconciled such paradoxes as the aesthetically perfect vs. imperfect, and the designed vs. emergent, we discovered truly unique results, suggesting a new possible role for architects/designers: that of “digital craftsman” and “chaperone of natural processes”.
