Clothing and Consciousness | Stacy Scibelli | TEDxWCC
Contemporary Fashion is an aspect of our everyday lives that is often overlooked as frivolous, extravagant, and utilitarian. This talk looks at the rich and varied history of clothing as it pertains to our personal consciousness, our public consciousness, and our environmental consciousness. This talk will also outline costuming and clothing as an access point to non-ordinary states of reality through various ceremonial practices such as Carnivale, Shamanism, matrimonial and mourning dress and other rites of passage, as well as our ability to change our minds and emotions through the clothing that we put on our body.
Stacy Scibelli is an artist and designer living and working in New York. Stacy received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston in 2004 and a Masters of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2009. She is currently the Curriculum Chair of Fashion Design and Technology at SUNY WCC, part-time faculty at Parsons The New School, and formerly the Program Coordinator and Lecturer of the Women in Creativity course at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Stacy is participating as an Artist in Residence at Mass MOCA this summer and has previously attended residency at the Boston Center for the Arts. She has received a Mass MOCA Assets for Artists grant, a Franklin Furnace Grant, and a project grant from Possible Futures in Atlanta GA. Inside the Artist's Studio: Liselot van der Heijden
Born in the Netherlands, lives and works in New York City and Haarlem (NL). Her studio is located at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in midtown Manhattan.
Liselot van der Heijden produces installations, videos, objects and photographs. Recurring themes in van der Heijden's works are control and power of the gaze, the tendency to objectify the other and nature as a cultural/political idea and anthropomorphic projection. Her work suggests that representations of nature reveal more about cultural, ideological, political and social frameworks, than actual nature.
Over the past decade, van der Heijden has exhibited at various institutions throughout Europe and the United States. Her work was shown at LOOP, Barcelona, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, Musée d'art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg and Centre Contemporain d'Istres, France, Videonale 8, Bonn, Smart Project Space, Amsterdam, and Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona. In the United States, venues include Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA, the Bates Museum of Art, Lewiston, Maine, Mason Gross Galleries, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, Danforth Museum, Framingham, MA, 40000, Chicago, Quotidian Gallery, San Francisco and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. In New York City, she has shown works at the New Museum, the Queens Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Lincoln Center, LMAK Projects, Luxe Gallery, Schroeder Romero, Exit Art, Artist Space, White Box, Momenta Art and the Dumbo Arts Festival, among other venues.
Liselot van der Heijden received a fellowship from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and numerous residencies from the Experimental Television Center. She has a BFA from the Cooper Union and a MFA from Hunter College. Van der Heijden has lectured on her work in venues such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, New York University, The School of Visual Art, and Pace University in New York. From 1999 until 2005, she taught at the Cooper Union and Pratt Institute. In September 2005, she joined the faculty of The College of New Jersey.

Stand Up! Life Lessons From the Silver Surfer | Kitty Pechet | TEDxBeaconStreet
Kitty's exploits on her surfboard are enough by themselves to make her stand out: she's 78 years old and still competing, against men and women, proving herself a champion in a sport she loves. Her talk was about surfing, but it was also more than that: it was about finding your happiness, standing up for what you know is right, and finding the courage to be the best version of yourself.
Kitty got on a surfboard for the first time in her 50s. It changed her life, and she never looked back. She rode her board to freedom. She went on to win dozens of surfing competitions in all categories, including “men only!” Before that, she had been a staid housewife, mother, and calligrapher; suddenly, she became a free spirit. Instead of perfect little letterforms, she started creating big, wild paintings. She has exhibited in City Hall in Bermuda, the Danforth Museum in Framingham, and the deCordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and had solo shows at Emmanuel College and Harvard University.

In the summer of 2006 one of his best friends handed him a copy of the book The Game by Neil Strauss with the words, Read this book, you'll take to it like a duck to water.
