China International Robot Show Opens in Shanghai
The fifth China International Robot Show (CIROS2016) that opened on Thursday in east China's Shanghai city attracts hundreds of first-class enterprises to participate in its three days' exhibition.
The show features the trend of premiumisation and intellectualisation, showcasing of two categories of robots: service robots and industrial robots.
The industrial robots, as the main part of the show, covers a wide range of sizes with larger ones being as big elephants and smaller ones as arms of children.
They can move precisely, carry parcels, spray paints, sort components, unlock screen and complete many other missions. Besides, some industrial robots can be operated by gestures through visual identity (VI).
The traditional robot, if equipped with the visual system, can find the workpiece via its vision facilities, said an exhibitor.
The service robot is mainly used for early childhood education and entertainment. They can communicate with people by voice recognition and face recognition and respond by language, emotion and dance.
They can be used for developing the communication ability of infants and children and amusing people. Connected with the internet, some service robots can be used for remote managing and monitoring purposes and for babies at home.
Chinese household intelligent robots are now in a leading position in the world. They can perform verbal communication and can be integrated into the internet of things, sometimes via connection to cellphones. We've realized such interworking, said another exhibitor.
Some exhibits with bionics techniques also attract people's attentions. The artificial fish, which is swimming in the water, can complete many missions including underwater photography with the applications installed.

CHINA: CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS IN BEIJING:
Mandarin/Nat
Most Chinese people may not know what Christmas is all about, but celebrations are still going on in the world's last major communist power.
Thousands of Beijing residents packed official government-sanctioned churches for Christmas Eve masses.
But one group of independent Chinese Christians criticised the growing international holiday, and preferred to celebrate the day in their own way.
The unusual sound of Christian music could be heard across Beijing on Christmas Eve.
The scene, of course, had its Chinese touches.
Beijing's main Catholic church was packed as midnight approached.
These churches are government sanctioned and controlled.
China strictly limits religious expression to these approved outlets.
But the interest which brought these people here couldn't be manufactured.
China has 10 (m) million Protestants and four (m) million Catholics worshipping in officially sanctioned churches.
But Beijing does not recognise the Pope, and regularly cracks down on underground churches loyal to the Vatican.
About 6-thousand people packed Chinese language masses throughout Wednesday evening.
But church workers said only about one-third were believers.
All over the Chinese capital, Christmas has become a time to make money.
On Christmas Day, it's business as usual across China.
Most financial markets, Chinese-owned businesses and schools were open.
State media made no mention of Christmas, but decorations adorned department stores, restaurants and hotels.
Chinese shopkeepers were slashing prices in the hope of bringing Christmas cheer to a flagging retail sector.
Crowds at Christmas masses have been increasing in recent years, but church officials say most of those attending are just curious.
But there's more than curiosity bringing worshippers to Alan Yuan's home, hidden deep inside a Beijing alleyway.
A Christmas Day meeting at the Christian minister's home drew a larger crowd than usual.
Such underground churches are often closed by Chinese officials, but this one has been allowed to continue.
85-year-old Yuan was trained by Christian missionaries in Shanghai in the 1930's.
He went on to preach until he was jailed in 1958 for refusing to cooperate with Chinese religious authorities.
Yuan was released in 1979 and has continued his preaching - largely undisturbed - ever since.
The Christianity preached here is not for the faint-hearted.
Yuan interprets the Bible strictly, and sees nothing but sin in the usual way of celebrating Christmas.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
In the world, especially in Europe and America, people get two days holiday for Christmas and they celebrate it wildly, dancing, playing music and committing crimes. It is also the same situation in Hong Kong. So we think, in the two weeks around Christmas, many people in those countries do bad things, singing and dancing and committing crimes. During this period the crime rate rises in those countries.
SUPER CAPTION: Alan Yuan, Chinese Christian Minister
Yuan's worshippers come here to experience a freedom they can't find in official churches.
As Yuan's wife explained, they don't want to worship where the government has control.
They only follow one leader, she says.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
We think that Jesus is the true head of all churches. However, the head of those (official) churches is not Jesus but the official religious department and the Ministry of the United Front (Communist Party organisation), which must give permission for everything. We don't have to get their permission. Our head is Jesus and this is the difference.

Robotic Bank
Behold The Future
State-owned Beijing-based China Construction Bank (CCB) says its unmanned Shanghai branch will make banking more convenient and efficient. The first thing customers are met by in the fully automated branch is a robot that answers inquiries via voice recognition. These banking humanoids are able to do most things a human assistant could, including opening accounts, transferring money and making investments. As well as talking robots, clients can explore the bank's latest home rental offerings using virtual reality headsets. According to the bank, it can handle 90 per cent of the demands of normal high street banks.

WORLD'S FIRST BANK ENTIRELY RUN BY ROBOTS 4-24-2018
A bank has opened a branch run entirely by robots, who greet customers and manage accounts, in a world first.
The Shanghai branch of the China Construction Bank (CCB) is run purely by technology - with virtual reality, artificial intelligence and facial recognition all playing
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the future of banking where everything is fully automated.
Beijing-based China Construction Bank says it's new high-tech branch in Shanghai is meant to make banking more convenient, personalized, and efficient. It also reflects growing competition from cashless payment systems that are giving the banks a run for their money.
A robot greets customers at the entrance and answers questions using voice recognition software.
Clients can swipe their national identification cards to enter the bank - or scan their faces using the bank's facial recognition device. Machines inside allow visitors to buy gold, change currency, or scout real estate investments using virtual reality goggles.
The bank isn't totally unstaffed. Guards are still present, and a room equipped with teleconference software allows VIP clients to request help from human employees based elsewhere.
News of the newfangled bank spread rapidly online, drawing throngs of curious observers.
I saw the bank on WeChat (a smartphone app), and we just happened to be in Shanghai, so I dropped by to take a look. It seems like it's very convenient and capable, and this robot's language and technological abilities are really good, much better than I had imagined, says visitor Li Xiaoqing.
These days, people are less and less likely to be inclined to want other people to come and bother them, Tian says. We hope to come to a bank where we can interact with machines, adds Tian Ting, a finance worker.
Banking technologist Li Linfeng, who was scouting the bank for Shenzhen-based Ping An Insurance, says he didn't think the bank's implementation of technology was particularly thoughtful. Older folk would likely need human help navigating such cutting-edge equipment, he says.
When you're exploring these technologies, you shouldn't just pay attention to the technology itself, but how people can interact with these technologies, Li says. Technology has to serve us, not leave people behind.

Thanks to Frank and Jerry of Zouba Tours: for taking me around. I paid for this tour, but they did a great job and I would recommend them.
Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible!
Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market:
Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it.
Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious.
Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well.
Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion.
Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing.
Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty.
Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious.
Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful.
Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty.
Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food.
Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour, but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
That completes Day 4 of this Chinese food tour of Yunnan. If you haven’t already, watch the full series here:
