In the southern part of the Odessa region on the bank of the Ukrainian delta of the Danube is located the city of Vilkovo, which historically acquired the name Ukrainian Venice. The old part of the city still retains its architecture, and the beauty of the neighboring Danube Biosphere Reserve fascinates everyone who will be here.
Danube provides livelihoods as it flows into the Black Sea

The Danube is a watery thread 2,857 kilometers (1,775 miles) long.
It flows from its beginnings in Germany , through Central Europe and out into the Black Sea from Ukraine , where thousands of people depend upon it for their livelihoods.
STORYLINE:
The Danube is many things to many people.
To the people who live near the Ukrainian delta it is everything....waterway, food source....life blood.
Oleg Polovtsiev has been fishing these waters all of his adult life.
But there are no fish to be caught today, due to seasonal variations and migrations.
When the fish do return to these waters, the numbers that can be caught are restricted by law.
The best seasons for fishing are March-April and October-December.
Fishing is the only source of income for many who live on the banks of the great river.
More than half the population of Vilkovo, a small town of 8000 residents, depend on the menfolk fishing herring, carp, catfish or roach.
In a control room men watch monitors to help steer large vessels through the Danube's course.
The navigable channel Danube-Black Sea is only half complete and many of the jobs promised have not materialised.
The Starostambulsky arm of the Danube was deepened in 2007 to allow the passage of cargo and passenger ships.
The project was not without controversy as Vasyl Prokopenko, from the Delta-pilot unit of the State enterprise Ukraine Sea Port Authority explains.
Over the years of its use (the Danube-Black Sea channel) has shown its economic sense. There were a lot of artificial problems over how this project would effect the environment of the Lower Danube, including the Danube biosphere preserve. But it was implemented so well, that there was not a single serious accident or negative impact on the all the elements of the hydro system, from hydrology to birds and animals, because the project was developed very clearly in line with all the environmental norms.
The construction of dams in the 20th century has reduced the water flow in the Danube dramatically, according to environmentalists like Oleksander Volovshkevich, the director of the Danube Biosphere Reserve:
We lost a great quantity of water, the hydrological regime of our waters and in a number of channels has worsened significantly. On the whole, the Ukrainian Danube delta is rapidly deteriorating he says.
Here the river forms a natural boundary between Ukraine and Romania as Major Serhiy Adamchuk, head of the local Ukrainian Border Guard explains: Romania is located the right bank of the Old Stambul bed of the Danube there is Romania and Ukraine on the left. The main difficulty in keeping the Danube safe is the poor accessibility of this region, which we must safeguard. Because the border runs along the river, we need special equipment to safeguard it.
Border guards are on duty in speedboats to check the boats and their passengers. Visas are not required, but travellers need to give their personal details to border staff, but they are not permitted to land on the shores of the country that they are not resident.
Local residents and fishermen also report potential violations to the border guards.
In recent years Russian tourists have been discovering the beauty and wildlife of the Ukrainian Danube Delta, often enjoying a pleasure boat cruise of the Danube Biosphere Reserve.
Their goal - to see the zero kilometre sign of the Danube.
The sign 0 km is set where the Danube flows into the Black Sea at Ochakov Way.
Pelican tour operator Mykhailo Zhmud was one of the first to develop the tourism on the Ukrainian side of the Danube.
Zhmud now owns his fleet of small ships, hotel and restaurant on the banks of the river.
The river carries an immense amount of silt.

“The Wonderland,” that was the name ancient Greeks gave to the steppes stretching beyond the Danube river. Taking a quick look at the city of Izmail, you can see a mural of the “Siege of Izmail” painted on the oldest building of the city. This building is a Turkish mosque built at the end of 16th century. The unique landscapes of the “Dunayski Plavni” biosphere reserve contain islands, canals, diverse wildlife, and millions of birds. It is all centered on the town of Vylkove, Ukraine’s Venice.

Vylkove is located inside the Danube Delta marshlands, which makes grain growing almost impossible, thus making fishery in the Danube, delta lakes and in the Black Sea the main occupation of the local people. In addition, the city is famous for its viticulture and cultivation of strawberries on the islands in the river delta.
The administration of the Ukrainian Danube Biosphere Reserve (participant of UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites) is based in Vylkove. The territory of the Reserve includes the islands upstream and downstream the Danube, reedbeds to north from Danube, delta water bodies and adjacent area of the sea (2 kilometers from the coast).
Vilkovo in Ukraine is a beautiful sight along with water, trees and snow-white small houses form an image of the city, which can be characterized as intimate-beautiful and magic. Here you feel as if you belong to the part of the wise world. Here you see: a beauty is a reward for heavy works. The life of city dwellers is continuously connected with water. The set of channels bear waters of Danube more close to habitation.

Здесь река образует огромную дельту -- одно из крупнейших водно-болотных угодий Европы. Delta Dunării este a doua cea mai mare deltă fluvială din Europa, după Delta Volga, și este cea mai bine păstrată de pe continent. Cea mai mare parte a Deltei Dunării se află în România, cu o mică parte în Ucraina. Suprafața sa aproximativă este de 4.152 km², din care 3.446 km² se află în România.
Sfantu Gheorghe nu este doar bratul sudic prin care Dunarea se varsa in Marea Neagra, ci si numele unei comune din Delta Dunarii. Comuna din judetul Tulcea este formata doar din satul de resedinta cu acelasi nume.
In Sfantu Gheorghe traiesc, in prezent, sub 1.000 de oameni. Sfantu Gheorghe se afla pe primul loc pe lista noastra cu recomandari pentru excursii in Delta Dunarii, pentru ca este cea mai importanta localitate dintre cele amplasate de-a lungul celui mai lung brat al Dunarii. In Sfantu Gheorghe se ajunge cu nava, din Tulcea.
In functie de viteza navei, din Tulcea pana in Sfantu Gheorghe poti sa faci intre o ora si circa patru ore. Pe teritoriul administrativ al comunei Sfantu Gheorghe se afla complexul Sacalin-Zatoane, o arie protejata de interes national (rezervație naturală strictă de tip avifaunistic), in care poti admira, printre altele, lopatari, starci albi si lebede.

The Danube Delta is the second largest delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and the best preserved on the continent.
In 1991, the Romanian part of the Danube Delta became part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Around 2,733 km² of the delta are strictly protected areas.
In 1998, under UNESCO Programme on Man and the Biosphere, the 6264.03 km² of Danube Delta were established as Biosphere Reserve shared by Romania and Ukraine.
Historically, in Romania, part of Danube Delta was marked as a reserve back in 1938.

Дунайский биосферный заповедник (до 1998 — заповедник «Дунайские плавни») — государственный заповедник на территории Одесской области Украины. Расположен в Килийском гирле реки Дунай.
Территория заповедника охватывает острова дельты вверх и вниз по течению Дуная, плавни на север по Дунаю, озёра дельты и двухкилометровую полосу морской акватории вдоль побережья. Общая площадь дельты Дуная составляет более 5640 км2, из них 1200 км2 приходится на украинскую часть.
Администрация заповедника расположена в городе Вилково.
На румынской стороне дельты Дуная также создан заповедник, внесенный в 1991 году в Список Всемирного Наследия ЮНЕСКО.
В соответствии с Программой развития заповедного дела на Украине на 2001—2015 г.г. предусмотрено расширение площади заповедника за счет зарезервированных специальным Указом Президента наиболее ценных участков водно-болотных угодий Придунавья до города Рени. Таким образом заповедник имеет перспективу расширения на все наиболее ценные водно-болотные угодья (верховья лимана Сасык, озеро Кугурлуй и пр.)
Дельта Дуная разрезана многочисленными рукавами, каналами, протоками, с многочисленными озёрами, ериками и заливами. На территории заповедника расположено ряд островов, наибольшие из которых Ермаков, Кубанский, Анкудинов, Полуденный, Стамбульский.
Флора заповедника насчитывает 950 видов сосудистых растений.
Животный мир Дунайского биосферного заповедника ныне насчитывает более 5 тыс. видов.
В Красную книгу Украины внесено 61 вид фауны, а в международные красные списки 15 видов.
Важнейшей составляющей заповедной дельтовой фауны являются птицы, представляющие более половины видового состава орнитофауны Украины. Только здесь можно увидеть большие стаи розовых пеликанов (до тысячи особей).
43 вида птиц заповедника (более 70% редких птиц государственного реестра Украины), занесено в Красную книгу Украины и Европейский красный список. Для определенной их части дунайская дельта является основным местом существования всей популяции.
Особое значение акватория заповедника имеет для рыб. Здесь встречаются все виды рыб, занесённые на территории Украины в Европейский красный список (шип, осетр атлантический, лосось черноморский и дунайский и др.). Из 32 видов рыб, занесенных в Красную книгу Украины, в заповеднике встречается почти половина.
Фауна млекопитающих заповедника насчитывает почти четыре десятка видов, а прибрежные участки моря постоянно посещают все три вида черноморских дельфинов. Особый интерес представляет единственный представитель ластоногих Чёрного моря тюлень-монах, занесенный в Европейский красный список. Из редких околоводных животных случаются выдра речная, горностай, норка европейская и кот дикий лесной...
Дельта Дуная
Велика європейська річка Дунай бере свій початок на східних схилах Шварцвальда у вигляді двох невеликих гірських струмків. Потім перетинає територію 10 європейських держав і утворює в нижній течії велику дельту, площею більше 4000 кв. км, другу за величиною в Європі, після дельти Волги.
Весна в дельті Дунаю. Молода рослинність забарвлює ландшафт в зелений колір, повітря наповнюється пташиним гомоном. Дельта пробуджується від зимового сну.
У Дунай на нерест заходить чорноморський оселедець або по місцевому дунайка і починається оселедцева путина. Ця риба добре відома своїм специфічним смаком, який надає їй дунайська вода. Колись, її поставляли в Європу в якості делікатесу, разом з устрицями і лапками жаб. Зараз улови вже не ті, і риби вистачає, в основному, для місцевих ринків.
Вілковські човни універсальні, стійкі і місткі. Їх роблять місцеві умільці, передаючи з покоління в покоління секрети свого непростого ремесла.
Українська частина дельти Дунаю почала формуватися близько 400 років тому і процес цей триває до сьогодні. Мільйони тонн мулу, які Дунай щорічно виносить в море, змішуються з морським піском і утворює … наймолодшу сушу Європи.
Дуже скоро тут з'являється перший очерет, і інші рослини піонери.
Цю територію швидко заселяють і тварини, зокрема птахи. Такі, наприклад, як чорноголовий реготун. Через освоєння людиною узбережжя і зубожіння рибних запасів, чисельність їх всюди скоротилася. Але тут в дельті Дунаю, ці і багато інших видів пернатих, почувають себе досить комфортно.
Всього в дельті Дунаю зустрічається близько 350 видів птахів, у тому числі і ті, які зникли або стали рідкісними в Європі. Наприклад, гіганти пташиного світу рожеві і кучеряві пелікани.
Уздовж русла річки Дунай, по берегах проток і островів простягнулися мальовничі галерейні ліси.
Багато видів тварин тут знаходять притулок і корм. Цікаво, що навіть чаплі часто гніздяться на деревах, вважаючи їх кращими за очеретяні зарості.
Відомо, що у минулому красивим довгим пір'ям малих білих чапель прикрашали дамські капелюхи, одяг і навіть кінську збрую.
У дельті Дунаю росте близько 900 видів вищих рослин, а очеретяні зарості - найбільші в Європі.
Цей доступний природний ресурс здавна використовувало місцеве населення, як будівельний матеріал, паливо і корм для домашніх тварин.

У 1998 році, тут, на базі державного заповідника Дунайські плавні, був створений Дунайський біосферний заповідник, загальною площею близько 50 тисяч гектар.
А це - візитцентр заповідника, де можна дізнатися все про історію краю, його тваринний і рослинний світ.
Офіс заповіднику розташований в невеликому містечку Вилкове. Дунай тут розгалужується на рукави, утворюючи вилку, звідси, за однією з версій, і народилася назва поселення. Воно було засноване в 1746 році старообрядцями, козаками і іншим людом, які бігли сюди від переслідувань царського уряду та церкви.
Щоб побудувати будинок в плавнях, людям доводилося насипати цілий острів. Цим і пояснюється незвичайний зовнішній вигляд старої частини міста. Замість вулиць тут канали або по місцевому єрики, а головний транспортний засіб - човен.
Уздовж каналів тягнуться дерев'яні тротуари - клАдки. Завдяки ним можна переміщатися по місту навіть під час паводку, коли Дунай виходить з берегів.
Традиційний вИлковський будинок побудований з очерету, що обмазаний дунайським мулом. Влітку в такому будинку прохолодно, а взимку добре зберігається тепло.
До речі дунайський мул завжди був не лише будівельним матеріалом, але і чудовим добривом для городів. А садівництво, разом з рибальством, виноробством, а тепер ще і туристичним бізнесом є основними видами діяльності місцевого населення.
Настає спекотне дунайське літо. На приморських островах в самому розпалі гніздування у крячків. Ці шумні птахи утворюють іноді величезні колонії, що налічують десятки тисяч птахів. Цікаво, що захищаючи свої гнізда вони нападають навіть на людей, пікіруючи згори, завдаючи гострими дзьобами сильних ударів і поливаючи непрошених прибульців послідом.
А в тихих затонах і протоках мальовничими полянками зацвітає одна з найкрасивіших і рідкісніших водних рослин Європи - болотоцвітник щитолистний.
Недивно, що дельта Дунаю з її величезним природним потенціалом і етнічною різноманітністю є популярним туристичним центром, а літо, як відомо розпал туристичного сезону.
Тут досить багато різних маршрутів і спеціально обладнаних стоянок для туристів.

Onze vakantie van juli 2014 in de Donaudelta. Van Tulcea tot aan de Zwarte Zee. Een avontuurlijke tocht door een soort grote hete Biesbosch met veel moeras, vogels, kleine dorpjes, prachtige natuur en muggen!

Ein herrlicher Tag im Donaudelta! Ausflug mit Mirel und seinem Boot in die Kanäle und Seen des rumänischen Deltas. Durch den türkischen Kanal in Richtung Insel Saccharin, Schiffswrack der Tuzla, dann durch den Flamanda Kanal zur Fischsammelstation und zurück zur Nestroy. Unterwegs mit Karina aus dem Büro.

Wilkowo / 0 km Ujście Dunaju - Ukraińska Wenecja / Ukraininian Venice
Ukraińska miejscowość WIlkowo nazywana jest potocznie Wenecją. Trudno jednak porównywać ze sobą te jakże odległe dwa światy. Jedyne, co je łączy to fakt, iż w obu znajdują się kanały, którymi można przedostać się z jednej części miejscowości do drugiej.
Przyjemna podróż na łono natury. Odwiedzamy rezerwat przyrody, w którym żyje wiele gatunków ptaków i ryb. Zwieńczeniem naszej podróży jest miejsce, w którym rzeka Dunaj wpływa do Morza Czarnego. Taki mały koniec świata :)
The Ukrainian town of WIlkowo is commonly called Venice. However, it is difficult to compare these two distant worlds with each other. The only thing that connects them is that in both there are channels that you can get from one part of the town to another.
A pleasant trip to the bosom of nature. We visit a nature reserve where many species of birds and fish live. The culmination of our trip is the place where the Danube River flows into the Black Sea. Such a small end of the world :)
