Fort Monroe
Fort Monroe was a military installation in Hampton, Virginia—at Old Point Comfort, the southern tip of the Virginia Peninsula. Along with Fort Wool, Fort Monroe guarded the navigational channel between the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads—the natural roadstead at the confluence of the Elizabeth, the Nansemond and the James rivers. Surrounded by a moat, the seven-sided stone fort is the largest stone fort ever built in the United States.
During the initial exploration by the mission headed by Captain Christopher Newport in the earliest days of the Colony of Virginia, the site was identified as a strategic defensive location. Beginning by 1609, defensive fortifications were built at Old Point Comfort during Virginia's first two centuries. The first was a wooden stockade named Fort Algernourne. However, the much more substantial facility of stone to become known as Fort Monroe were completed in 1834. The principal facility was named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe. Throughout the American Civil War, although most of Virginia became part of the Confederate States of America, Fort Monroe remained in Union hands. It became notable as a historic and symbolic site of early freedom for former slaves under the provisions of contraband policies. For two years thereafter, the former Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, was imprisoned at the fort. His first months of confinement were spent in a cell of the casemate fort walls that is now part of its Casemate Museum. In the 20th century, it housed the Coast Artillery School, and later the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command until its decommission.

HISTORY: An iron ore mine was operated by the Juniata Iron and Furnace Company in state college area between 1880 and 1895. The town of Tow Hill consisted of about two dozen log houses, a school house for twelve students in grades 1 to 5, two big frame houses for the head boss, a company grocery store and train station, an ore washer, and loading platforms.
Tow Hill may have gotten its name from a type of oil lamp carried by people there, a sort of Aladdin's lamp, which used tow (flax fibers) as a wick. Some suppose it was named for the tow-colored fields of flax grown there. Another story indicates the name came from towing the carts up to the ore pits, and then letting them roll down the hill again. (Source: Jean Aron The short Hiker)
How Modern Medicine Was Born of Slavery
Lewis & Clark's 15th Annual Ray Warren Symposium “Bitter Pills: Race, Health, and Medicine,” was held November 7–9, 2018.
On November 7, Deirdre Cooper Owens, associate professor of history at Queens College, CUNY, gave this keynote presentation titled “How Modern Medicine Was Born of Slavery.”
Presentation description: Cooper Owens explains how the institution of American slavery was directly linked to the creation of reproductive medicine in the U.S. She provides context for how and why physicians denied black women their full humanity, yet valued them as “medical superbodies” highly suited for experimentation. In engaging with 19th-century ideas about so-called racial difference, she sheds light on the contemporary legacy of medical racism.
Welcoming remarks and introductions by Maya Hernández and Jasmine Torres, L&C ’19 and RWS co-chairs.
Gray Cook: Movement Search: Connecting You to Your Movement Path | Talks at Google
Gray Cook is an internationally recognized physical therapist, orthopedic certified specialist and certified strength and conditioning specialist. Cook is the founder of Functional Movement Systems, a company that has developed movement screens and assessments used in professional sports, Olympic sports and elite military teams. He is the author of Athletic Body in Balance and Movement. By revisiting the natural developmental principles, Cook forces us to rethink motor learning, exercise and modern conditioning practices. Gray’s talent for making the complex seem simple and for translating good theory into practice has led to his popularity as a speaker on healthy movement.
We deconstruct human movement, like some software engineers do with code. We identify mistakes in personal fitness, physical education, physical rehabilitation and athletic development.
These are simply programming errors.
Everyone living with broken movement has already been on a program or had an opportunity to be programmed. They failed and they’ve been failed.
The number one predictor of a future injury is a previous injury. That statistic tells us that exercise and rehabilitation are unable to restore the original operating program using its authentic programming language—because the language of movement isn't written in words or pictures or some type of schematic.
The language of movement is written in feel.
We often set ourselves up for failure when we try to reprogram (develop, correct or rehabilitate) our own movement. We simply haven't taken the time to learn the language.
When my colleagues and I had an opportunity to develop a screening process for broken movement and painful movement—dysfunctional movement—we used the language of movement to build it. Our screens are user-friendly measuring sticks for movement that search you for programming errors.
If your body is broken,
If your exercise is broken,
If your lifestyle is broken,
If your culture's physical expression is broken...
We're here to identify the mistakes and measure how broken it is. That’s what we do.
We don't make, create or produce better movement. We can't sell it to you.
We show you how to tap into your original movement operating system.
Then, you grow movement.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
A museum ( mew-ZEE-əm; plural museums or, rarely, musea) is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance. Many public museums make these items available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. The largest museums are located in major cities throughout the world, while thousands of local museums exist in smaller cities, towns and rural areas. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums, and children's museums. Amongst the world's largest and most visited museums are the Louvre in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the British Museum and National Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and Vatican Museums in Vatican City. According to International Council of Museums, there are more than 55,000 museums in 202 countries.
