#Digitalstadt Darmstadt: Bürgerinfoabend im Darmstadtium

Bei der Bürgerinformationsveranstaltung am Dienstag, 2. Mai 2017, im Darmstadtium hat Oberbürgermeister Jochen Partsch Inhalte und Hintergründe zum bereits eingereichten Wettbewerbsbeitrag erläutert und den weiteren Weg zur Entscheidung vorgestellt. Außerdem hat dazu Mathias Samson, Staatssekretär im Hessischen Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Energie, Verkehr und Landesentwicklung, gesprochen. Das Land Hessen unterstützt die Bewerbung der Wissenschaftsstadt Darmstadt zur Digitalen Stadt von Anfang an. Danach gab Michael Waidner, Leiter des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Sichere Informationstechnologie SIT, einen fachlichen Einblick zu den Chancen und Risiken der digitalen Zukunft.

Name Origin
Element was officially named on August the 16th 2003 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) at a meeting in Ottawa, Canada. The name honours the Laboratory for Heavy Ion Research (called GSI) in Darmstadt, Germany, where the substance was first made.

Sources
A synthetic element that is not present in the environment at all. Chemically, the element is in the same Group as nickel, palladium, and platinum (Group 10). Unlike these lighter atoms, element 110 decays after a small fraction of a thousandth of a second into lighter elements by emitting a-particles which are the nuclei of helium atoms.

Literally translated, Darmstadt means; Gut City. Darmstadt, a city in the state of Hesse in Germany, is located in the southern part of the Rhine-Main-Area (Frankfurt Metropolitan Region). Darmstadt has a population around 150,000 (2013). The Darmstadt Larger Urban Zone has 430,993 inhabitants.

Darmstadt holds the official title City of Science (German: Wissenschaftsstadt) as it is a major centre of scientific institutions, universities, and high-technology companies. The European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) is located in Darmstadt, as well as GSI Centre for Heavy Ion Research, where several chemical elements such as bohrium (1981), meitnerium (1982), hassium (1984), darmstadtium (1994), roentgenium (1994), and copernicium (1996) were discovered. Darmstadt is also the seat of the world's oldest pharmaceutical company, Merck, which is the city's largest employer. More:

Darmstadt is a city near Frankfurt in southwest Germany. It’s known for the Mathildenhöhe district's art nouveau buildings, like the iconic Wedding Tower. Museum Künstlerkolonie features art nouveau glass, textiles and jewelry. Hessisches Landesmuseum displays art by Joseph Beuys. Northeast, the Messel Pit has Eocene-era fossils. To the south is ruined Frankenstein Castle, which may have inspired the famed book.

Beautiful Jugendstil (art nouveau) architecture and excellent museums are the biggest draws of this strollable city 35km south of Frankfurt. Famed for its technical university, Darmstadt is a designated Wissenschaftsstadt (City of Science). The super-heavy element Darmstadtium was first created at Darmstadt's GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research) in 1994. The city’s glass-and-stone conference centre is also called the Darmstadtium.

In 2017, Darmstadt won Germany’s first ever Digital City award for its investment in a sustainable digital future; already, the power supply for the entire tram network has been converted to 100% green electricity. The surrounding area has some fascinating sights, including the Unesco-listed archaeological site Grube Messel, and fabled castle Burg Frankenstein.

Prior to World War I, Darmstadt was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. The Grand Dukes used to live in what is now the Schloss Marktplatz. It is also the birthplace of the last Empress of Russia, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova, who was born Prinzessin Victoria Alix Helena Louise Beatrice von Hessen und bei Rhein. Sadly, much of the old town was destroyed in carpet bombing by the Allies during World War II, and most of what is still standing was reconstructed after the war. Darmstadt also lost its status as the capital of Hesse after the war, the honour now lying with the nearby city of Wiesbaden.

The popular recreational drug Ecstasy was first synthesised in Darmstadt in 1912 by a chemist known as Anton Kollisch while he was working for the pharmaceutical company Merck. The element Darmstadtium, element 110 on the Periodic Table, is named after the city. Perhaps as many as 11 atoms of this short half-life element have been synthesized to date.

Woran denken Sie, wenn Sie „Tannhäuser“ hören? Na klar, das ist doch eine Oper! Die wohl berühmteste von Richard Wagner. In der sich der Tannhäuser, also der Held, im Zwiespalt zwischen profaner Leibeslust und höchster Gottesliebe aufreibt. Soweit, so gut… aber wussten Sie auch, dass gleichzeitig und völlig unabhängig voneinander auch in Darmstadt ein „Tanhäuser“ entstand? Hier lebte und arbeitete nämlich der Komponist Carl Ludwig Amandus Mangold, der den Tanhäuser-Stoff ebenfalls zu einer Oper verarbeitete. Und genau diesen Darmstädter Tanhäuser, den gibt es am kommenden Sonntag erstmals im Darmstadtium zu bestaunen.

What is Darmstadtium?

Darmstadtium is a synthetic chemical element with symbol D s and atomic number 110. It is an extremely radioactive synthetic element. The most stable known isotope, darmstadtium-281, has a half-life of approximately 10 seconds. Darmstadtium was first created in 1994 by the G S I Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research near the city of Darmstadt, Germany, after which it was named.

In the periodic table, it is a d-block transactinide element. It is a member of the 7th period and is placed in the group 10 elements, although no chemical experiments have yet been carried out to confirm that it behaves as the heavier homologue to platinum in group 10 as the eighth member of the 6d series of transition metals. Darmstadtium is calculated to have similar properties to its lighter homologues, nickel, palladium, and platinum.

Was kaum einer weiß: Darmstadt gilt als „Architekturstadt. Vor allem in der Epoche des Jugendstils hat sich die Stadt architektonisches Renommee erworben. Die Stadtkrone -- die Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Gesamtkunstwerke des Jugendstils. Jedes Jahr laden die sogenannten Jugendstiltage Ende Mai zu einer Zeitreise ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert ein.Darmstadt gilt vor allem als „Wissenschaftsstadt. Die Stadt im Bundesland Hessen hat bedeutende Forschungseinrichtungen, wie etwa das Fraunhofer-Institut, und zwei große Hochschulen. Hier studieren etwa 35 000 Studenten. Architektur gehört zu den renommiertesten Fachrichtungen. Die Innenstadt wurde im 2. Weltkrieg zum großen Teil zerstört und in der Nachkriegszeit wurden viele ästhetische Bausünden begangen. Aber auch moderne Architektur findet in Darmstadt ihren Raum: Das vor 300 Jahren gegründete und im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörte Staatstheater wurde Anfang der 70er Jahre neu erbaut und von 2002 bis 2006 innen und außen eindrucksvoll saniert. Das 2007 eröffnete Wissenschafts- und Kongresszentrum „darmstadtium ließ sich die Stadt über 90 Millionen Euro kosten. Es liegt direkt im Stadtzentrum und integriert die alte Stadtmauer in den modernen Bau aus Glas, Beton und Stahl. Architektonische Experimente haben in Darmstadt eine lange Tradition. Vor allem in der Epoche des Jugendstils hat sich die Stadt international einen Namen gemacht. Zwischen 1900 und 1914 entstand die Künstlerkolonie auf der Mathildenhöhe. Sie gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Gesamtkunstwerke dieser Epoche überhaupt. Neben den unterschiedlich gestalteten Jugendstilvillen, dem Wasserreservoir und dem Museum Künstlerkolonie steht auf der Mathildenhöhe auch Darmstadts Wahrzeichen: der 48 Meter hohe Hochzeitsturm -- wegen seiner an eine schlanke Hand erinnernde Form auch „Fünf-Finger-Turm genannt.
