Mission Tejas State Park - Davy Crockett National Forest - Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area
In May of 2018, theTwo Tired Teachers had a chance to visit Mission Tejas State Park, which is in the Davy Crockett National Forest.
In Mission Tejas State Park is a replica of a mission. We strongly recommend that you go by the ranger station and pick up a pamphlet about the mission. The pamphlet will give you a list of unique things to look for in the mission.
The campsites are large and spacious. In this small state park, there are only about 15 campsites.
The day use area has a fishing pond. It's off a gorgeous path. The day use area also has a large playground.
The Rice House is also at Mission Tejas State Park. The house was built in 1828 and later moved to the state park. It is a saddlebag dog trot house.
The saddlebag part is the fireplace that goes to two rooms, and the dog trot is the open area in the middle of the house. That open area was where the Rice family slept, ate, and relaxed during the hot summer months. The dog trot received a breeze anytime one was to be had.
When visiting Mission Tejas State Park, be sure to pick up a trail map. Not all of the trails are marked on the campground map. Rangers give guided tours of some of the trails.
Entering the Davy Crockett National Forest, a trip to the visitors center offers so much information. The people working there can tell you about camping fees, dispersed camping, and much more.
Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area is a campground/recreation area in Davy Crockett National Forest. It has a huge day use area. Campsites are $20 per night.
The recreation area does have three fishing piers. Since it isn't in a Texas State Park, you do need a fishing license to fish there.
Also in the day use area is a large swimming area. In the past alligator etiquette was posted for the area. The Two Tired Teachers have swum there.
Mission Tejas State Park is a favorite of the Two Tired Teachers. It's a beautiful small park in the piney woods of East Texas.

Davy Crockett National Forest is off U.S. Highway 69 lying west of Lufkin, Texas and east of Crockett. It is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service local headquarters in Lufkin. There are local ranger district offices located in Ratcliff.
The forest, part of the Piney Woods ecoregion, covers a total of 160,647 acres (251.0 sq mi; 650.1 km2) in two counties - Houston 94,481 acres (147.6 sq mi; 382.4 km2) and Trinity 67,361 acres (105.3 sq mi; 272.6 km2).
Davy Crockett National Forest, which is bordered on the northeast by the Neches River, includes the 45-acre (180,000 m2) Ratcliff Lake. The area is pine-hardwood woodlands with flat to gently rolling terrain.
Camping at Davy Crockett National Forest - Testing the CORE Tent
We head out from Austin on Hwy 21 past the town of Crockett to camp in the beautifully pined Davy Crockett National Forest - in an area known as the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area.
There's plenty of wildlife including deer, raccoons, squirrels, FLYING squirrels, bluebirds, cranes and much more - we had the pleasure of witnessing most species that reside in the park other than snakes luckily.

Lake Ratcliff State Park
So we went camping as the last thing to do for 2015, Temps ranged from 33 to 57 the whole time. It was great fun, but I got a cold I'm still trying to get over.
