NEPAL, KATHMANDU: SOUVENIR MARKET
riprese di Marco Petruzzelli
tvreporter.it

Nepal Knife Shop: $300 Kukri ????????
■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: I spent today wandering around Kathmandu's many markets looking for unique shops to buy Nepalese souvenirs from. To be honest I didn't find many stores that piqued my interest. But one stood out, the Ghurka knife shop selling Kukris in the centre of Kathmandu.
Kukris come in many shapes and sizes. Some are ceremonial. Others are used for hunting and in combat. This shop had it all so I felt compelled to investigate and make a purchase.

Our visit Kathmandu travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums, fascinating temples and the city by day and evening when Kathmandu comes alive at night. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Kathmandu tourism brochure, Kathmandu city tour or Kathmandu itinerary.
Kathmandu City Guide | Nepal Travel Series Transcript:
Well good morning. It is our first full day in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं). We are up bright and early. Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised by a destination, so we arrived in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) without a whole lot of prior research. We knew we wanted to see the temples and palaces around Durbar Square (Basantapur Darbar Kshetra), but that was about it. We were up early, but Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) was buzzing. Scooters were racing to work, vendors were setting up their fresh produce, and construction work was underway.
Alright, so next up we are in Indrachok (इन्द्रचोक) It is a market area and yeah very lively. We're at the Garden of Dreams. Garden of Dreams (स्वप्न बगैंचा) and there is a beautiful little cafe & restaurant here. So we're just relaxing. These gardens are partly funded by the Austrian government. It is momo (饃饃) time. So we ordered vegetable momo today.
It is day 2 in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) and today's excursion is to the Monkey Temple. The name is Swayambhunath (स्वयम्भू स्तूप).
We just finished visiting the Monkey Temple. We're riding a taxi to visit Pashupatinath Temple (पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिर) which is one of the more popular ones here in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं).
This next temple is a sacred Hindu site (पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिर) where many believers choose to be cremated. According to the Nepalese Hindu tradition, the body must be dipped three times into the Bagmati River in order to break the reincarnation cycle.
So today is our last day in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) and we've been staying in the neighborhood of Thamel. It is kind of like the touristy area. They have a lot of shops where you can pick-up souvenirs and like little trinkets to take back home. So we're going to do a bit of shopping.
Today we are having Dal Bhat (दालभात). We've been eating Dal Bhat (ডাল ভাত) very very often. So much so Sam has declared it his favorite dish.
Lastly in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं), we went in search of a rooftop terrace to enjoy a drink & watch the sunset with colourful prayer flags blowing in the wind.
This is part of our Travel in Nepal video series showcasing Nepali food, Nepali culture and Nepali cuisine.

Bhaktapur - Nepal | JOEJOURNEYS
Bhaktapur is an ancient city and is renowned for its elegant art, fabulous culture, colorful festivals, traditional dances and indigenous lifestyle of Newari community.
Bhaktapur is known variously as City of Culture, Living Heritage, Nepal’s Cultural Gem, An open museum and a City of Devotees.
It is just 12 kilometers east of Kathmandu, but gives the feeling of prehistoric times given the ambiance of traditional homes, lifestyles and environment. The conch shaped historic city is spreading over just an area of 6.88 square kilometer at 1,401 meter altitude. The city was founded in 12th century by King Anand Dev Malla. Bhaktapur was the capital city of the Greater Malla Kingdom in the Kathmandu Valley till the 15th century AD. The many of Bhaktapur‘s greatest monuments were built by the then Malla rulers.
Bhaktapur has more temples per square foot than Patan or Kathmandu and is far enough out of town to keep the crowds away. Unfortunately, the city has been severely damaged by the 7.9 Magnitude Earthquake on 25th of April, 2015 whose epicenter was about 90 kms NW of Bhaktapur. Many buildings and historical temples, including some in the Bhaktapur Durbar Square collapsed.

Impressions of Thamel, Kathmandu, 2015
A brief look at the goings-on in Thamel (pronounced Tar-Mel), which is the main thoroughfare in Kathmandu. It is very touristy but also very popular with the locals, with shops and market stalls as well as the odd restaurant scattered about the area. However, as this is Nepal, it is very dirty and dusty, and if the traffic doesn't kill you, then the pollution certainly will!
