Little River Canyon, Alabama
Little River Canyon, Alabama, United States 2002
Little River Canyon National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located on top of Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, Alabama, and DeSoto State Park. The canyon was historically called May's Gulf, gulf being a common term throughout the Cumberland Plateau for this sort of feature (e.g. Savage Gulf in Tennessee, or Trenton Gulf nearby in Georgia, now renamed Cloudland Canyon). The canyon is sometimes said to be the deepest canyon in the United States east of the Mississippi River.

Little River Canyon National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located on top of Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, Alabama, and DeSoto State Park. Created by an act of Congress in 1992, the nearly 14,000-acre (5,700 ha) preserve protects what is sometimes said to be the nation's longest mountaintop river, the Little River. Prior to being assigned to the National Park Service, the canyon area formed the southmost unit of Alabama's DeSoto State Park.

Ride to Desoto Falls, Alabama 2018
A November motorcycle trip from North Florida, through western Georgia and into North Alabama. We tent camped two nights at Desoto Falls National Park. Had a severe thunderstorm with tornado watches all of the first night but the weather the second day was perfect. We rode the Little River Canyon Parkway, an 11 mile tight twistie touring road along the river. We visited the Desoto Falls and the Little River Canyon Falls. I rode a 2009 Harley Davidson Road King Classic and the other motorcycle was a 2015 Triumph Scrambler.

Oakmulgee Ranger District | Talladega National Forest in Alabama, USA. A visit to the forest in 2019 using a DJI Osmo Pocket and a Samsung Galaxy S9
“The 157,000 acre Talladega National Forest, Oakmulgee District is located in the Fall Line Hills of the Eastern Gulf Coastal Plain Physiographic Region. Dissected by the Cahaba River, the Oakmulgee, and its bottomlands, generally run east to west, and to the south is the Black Belt Prairie region. The vegetation is similar to Upper Coastal Plains with steep slopes more reminiscent of the Appalachian Plateau.”
“The longleaf” {pine trees} “of the Oakmulgee represents Alabama’s largest contiguous longleaf forest. It is also among the most unique ecosystem as it is a remnant ecosystem cut off from any current similar land cover types for sharing flora and fauna species or their genetic and reproductive characteristics. Soil types, vegetation, topography, and historical land use patterns have created a mosaic of habitats often contradictory including hardwood species on slopes and pine species in mesic drainages.”
