Dead Lakes State Recreation Area Teems with Life, Natural Beauty
Dead Lakes State Recreation Area takes its name from the skeleton husks of thousands of tree trunks that have dotted the swamp since a naturally occurring sandbar dammed the Chipola River sometime in the last few hundred years and killed them off. Their eerie shapes attract wildlife photographers from all over — but they also attract bass and the fishermen who hunt them. It is, after all, one of the richest bass fisheries in the state. Enjoy the scenery, catch yourself some dinner and sample the local Tupelo honey made famous by the 1997 Peter Fonda movie Ulee's Gold — filmed right here. And when you're ready, stop by the Tiki Grill. You'll never guess who's in the kitchen.

Torreya State Park and Dead Lakes
150 foot high bluffs overlooking the Apalachicola River make Torreya State Park a scenic place. The depressions in the ground that mark the Confederate gun emplacements and the 1849 Gregory House make is a historic place. The park is named for an extremely rare species of Torreya tree that only grows on the bluffs along the Apalachicola River. Torreya is popular for camping, hiking, picnicking, and bird-watching. Located 13 miles north of Bristol, Florida.
Dead Lakes was formed when sand bars created by the current of the Apalachicola River blocked the Chipola River. The ensuing high water killed thousands of trees in the floodplain, giving the area its name.
