Tucked-in just behind Brunei, and hidden high amid the equatorial rain-forests of northern Sarawak, is the World Heritage listed Gunung Mulu National Park.
If Borneo had a heart it would definitely be found deep within one of the spectacular cave systems in this remote natural treasure.
Set amid vertical cliffs, hidden gorges, and limestone pinnacles - much of it blanketed in impenetrable forest - The Gunung Mulu Heritage Area is an astonishing storehouse of geo and bio-diversity.
There are no roads into the park, so travelers must journey by air from the coastal town of Miri, or undertake a 10 hour boat trip up the river.
Besides the incredible species diversity found here, visitors come to Mulu to experience some of the world's longest and most spectacular cave systems. Winding and twisting their way through the mountain ranges are subterranean passages, rivers, and chambers so large they defy description. Professional park guides, drawn from the local rainforest and river people, are on hand to share their knowledge of Mulu. The Rainfall Discovery Walk takes visitors through lush forest, along tumbling rivers, and into the towering chambers and ancient riverbed of Deer Cave. Nearby, the smaller but more intimate Lang Cave awaits, with it's otherworldly stalagmite and stalactite formations.
Every sunset, visitors gather at the Bat Observatory to witness the mesmerising bat exodus.
Millions of bats, representing 12 species, swarm from the cave entrance in cloud-like formations in their nightly search for insects and fruit.
The park offers much to see and do, including the longest tree based canopy walk in the world, guided treks and longboat trips to hidden valleys and longhouse villages, as well as advanced caving expeditions for experienced cavers.

After I got my camera back from the local diver I went to find the rest of my group. When I found the rest of my group they were just going back from waterfalls in Mulu national park. They told me that our guide from yesterday is just going into the deer cave with small group so they recommend to me that I could join them and visit the deer cave. I did exactly that. First we went to Lang cave where we saw a lot of stalagmites and stalactites. Then we went to a much bigger deer cave where there are thousands of bats living. Then we were standing in front of the deer cave waiting fo bat exodus. When the bat exodus began I was amazed! There were thousands of bat flyling from the cave and they were looking like a big black snake on the sky. It was kind of magical :-)

Bat Exodus from Deer Cave, Mulu Sarawak
One of the world's natural wonders can be witnessed at the bat observatory ( a clearing in front of the southern entrance to Deer Cave, Gunung Mulu, Miri,Sarawak), on most days of reasonably dry weather. In the late afternoon, sometimes around 4.30 to 6.30pm (the exact time varies with the weather, and probably other unknown factors), hundreds of thousands of Wrinkle-lipped bats emerge from the cave in long spiraling streams to spend the night hunting for insects (Tadarida Plicate). On a good evening 1.8 million fly out of the cave. The whooshing roar of thousands of pairs of wings can be heard from a great distance. Sometimes a bat hawk picks out a meal from one of the bat flocks. It has been estimated that each bat eats an average of 5g of insects a night. On a good night, the Deer Cave bat colony therefore would consume some nice tons of insects! This illustrates the importance of leaving nature unharmed. If the bat colony is destroyed for some reason, the natural balance is upset and insect plagues might result.

I'm on a mission to explore as much of Malaysia while I'm living here as possible and Borneo was high on my list! Come with me on day one of my amazing adventure at Gunung Mulu National Park, a highlight of all my travels in 2016. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with amazing experiences in the Sarawak rain forest. I walked on a half kilometre canopy skywalk and was in the deer and lang caves, which boast over 2 MILLION bats! In fact, I saw thousands of bats, walked for hours in some of the prettiest forest I've seen in my life, and had a blast that day.
The canopy skywalk experience was a group guided tour through Mulu Park, which was very fun. Then I booked a private VIP tour though the (OMG so fabulous!!) Mulu Marriott where I was staying with their top guide Steve Duloi and we had a blast. Thanks to Sarawak Tourism Board for helping me to plan this trip, it was perfect!!

The exit into the Garden of Eden at the far end of the Deer Cave passage, Mulu National Park and World Heritage site, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. The Garden is a circular feature formed by collapse of a subterranean karst limestone passage to form a gigantic circular feature (tiankeng). It is reached by more adventurous tourists on guided tours through the lower passages of Deer Cave.

Deer Cave, located near Miri, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, is a show cave attraction of Gunung Mulu National Park. It was surveyed in 1961 by G.E. Wilford, of the Malaysian Geological Survey, who predicted that Mulu would yield many more caves in the future (Wilford, 1964). The cave, which is also known as Gua Payau or Gua Rusa by the local Penan and Berawan people, is said to have received its name because of the deer that go there to lick salt-bearing rocks (Tsen, 1993) and shelter themselves.
The cave was surveyed for the first time in the year 1978, producing measurements of 174 m wide and 122 m high in one section that passed through the mountain for a distance of one kilometer. The next survey increased the acknowledged passage length to 4.1 kilometers and connected Lang Cave, another show cave within the park, to the Deer Cave System. This survey, made in 2009 by the Hoffman Institute of Western Kentucky University, revealed the maximum cross-sectional area to be in the large southern passage. This was documented at 169 m wide with a ceiling height of 125 m. The northern passage registered the greatest ceiling height at 148m with a cross-sectional width of 142 m. The main entrance of Deer Cave was measured at 146 m.[1]
