10 Things you must Eat in Bologna [Italy]
The list of things to eat in Bologna is truly endless. Because of its position in the fertile region of Emilia Romagna and its history as the oldest university in the world, Bologna’s food culture is renowned in the whole country and in the whole world!
First staple of its food culture, the fresh egg pasta. From Lasagne, to Tagliatelle, but also Gramignia or Tortellini, there is a lot to taste and they’re incredibly tasty. They are sometimes dressed with meat sauce, the famous “Bolognese” called ragù, but also broth or cream. The bolognese cuisine also heavily relies on pork meat and cheeses coming from the whole region: ham (prosciutto) and Parmesan from the neighbour city of Parma, dried sausage (salumi), or the famous Mortadella, sometimes called Bologna in English. The nearby vineyards provide sparkling white wine such as Pignoletto but also sparkling red wine like the Lambrusco.
During your trip in the Italian city of food called La Grassa (the fat), here are what you should not miss!
#1 Tagliatelle al ragu: the original spaghetti alla bolognese are actually fresh egg pasta and not spaghetti
#2 Lasagne: not only this famous pasta dish comes from Bologna, but you will also discover that the pasta is originally green thanks to spinach
#3 Tortellini al brodo: one of the most iconic pasta of Bologna, those little bags are stuffed with prosciutto and cheese and served in broth
#4 Gramignia alla salsiccia: those little spirals of pasta are served with a sausage based sauce and it’s just delicious
#5 Mortadella: this famous and large Italian sausage, seasoned with myrtle berries and pistaccios is the specialty of Bologna
#6 Cured Pork Platter: produced from all around, the region supplies Bologna with delicious prosciutto such as Parma Ham, dried salsiccia, lard and more.
#7 Piadina: this flat bread comes from the Romagna region, and is generally stuffed with ham, fresh cheese, or vegetables. This is the typical sandwich of Bologna
#8 Tigelle: they looks like mini pancakes but they are salty. Filled with cheese, figs, or hams, they will go along your aperitivo during the whole night.
#9 Torta di riso : the most famous cake of Bologna is made out of rice, amaretto and almonds. It’s just delicious and the perfect companion to your coffee
#10 Sparkling wine: it’s not to eat, but wine definitely belongs to the Bolognese food culture. Try out some of its sparkling wine such as Pignoletto and Lambrusco!
Enjoy your trip and your meals! Buon appetito!
EATING ITALIAN FOOD in Bologna. 5 Must Try Dishes in Italy (Canadians try Italian Food)
We spent a day eating loads of delicious Italian food in Bologna, Italy. Bologna, the capital of Emilia-Romagna is known to be the food capital of Italy (and maybe even the world). We tried to stick to dishes primarily from this region.
We started our day eating one of the most delicious sandwiches we’ve ever had, a piadina! Filled with cured pork, soft cheese, and rocket (arugula), all in flat bread, it was amazing!
Next up we headed to Mercato Delle Erbe (a local food market) to get a glass of locally made white wine and tagliere (a meat and cheese board)- filled with mortadella, salami, prosciutto, and parmigiano reggiano.
Lastly we headed to dinner where we shared a bottle of locally made sangiovese. To start we tried a vegetable pie, primarily made of spinach and covered in a light cheese sauce. Trevor had tagliatelle with ragu sauce (in the rest of the world we refer to this as bolognese but they don’t call it that in Bologna), and Anna had tortellini in brodo (pork tortellini in broth).
Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. We’d highly encourage you to eat your way through Bologna!

Piadina:
Piada or Piadina Romagnola and “Piada alla Riminese” are the names used to describe this tasteful Italian product, made with simple and natural ingredients, following the traditional recipes of the rural inhabitants from Emilia Romagna.
Tortellini in brodo:
Tortellini en brodo (in broth) is a traditional first course for Christmas feasts in northern Italy. Because it calls for only a few ingredients, make sure they are of the highest quality, especially the chicken stock
Mercato Delle Erbe:
A place where you can do your daily shopping, as well as taste the products you are taking home with you, while sitting comfortably with a glass of good wine, or simply drop in for a drink and a bite to eat. Do not miss the chance to stop for a lunch or a dinner in one of the little restaurants or stands that offer you all kind of fresh products!
It was started as a herb market at the beginning of the century, first renovated by Philip Buriani and Arturo Carpi in 1910 and rebuilt into the present market after the devastation of war. Besides, the noble Old Market that has been well known to all tourists, Mercato delle Erbe has been staying in the hearts of people from Bologna, of all the old and young, evoking memories, representing a habit and culture.
Bologna:
Bologna is a historical city, with around 380,000 inhabitants. Although it is well known by Italians, it is less so among foreign visitors. Little English is spoken by its residents. It is the capital and largest city of Emilia-Romagna (a region in northern Italy). Bologna is famed for having the oldest university in the Western world, a lively student population, exquisite food, typical brick terracotta-roofed architecture and porticos, theatre and nightlife.
Bologna is famous for its cuisine (la cucina Bolognese). It is also viewed as a progressive and well administered city. It is considered second only to Venice in beauty by many Italians

I spent 24 hours in Bologna in Italy eating as much of some of the best Italian food I could find. It was amazing. The best pasta in the world, the birthplace of spagetti bolognese and tortelini. I cant wait to go back and eat more.
I also braved a storm in Torino so that I could try real Napolitan Pizza - It was worth it!
And yes... I realise that I should have had a shave.

One Day in Bologna, Italy! ???? Free Walking Tour
We made a last minute decision to visit Bologna as it was on our way to San Marino. We didn't do much research, and we only had one day to visit, so we opted for the Free Walking Tour (tip-based tour) in Bologna. This is usually a great way to see the highlights and learn some interesting facts and history about the city.
We first had to learn how to use the public transportation to get into the city from our Airbnb, which was a little more confusing than we thought.
The one thing we knew we wanted to do in Bologna was EAT of course, and we did a LOT of that.
We almost always use Airbnb to rent an apartment for an extended period of time when we are traveling. Its the most convenient way to have a place booked so we can hit the ground running when we land. Its also the most comfortable so we can use it as a work space and having a kitchen allows us to make a lot of our own meals.

24 hours in Bologna: Delicous Italian food, secret views and strong coffee
Bologna was our stop over on the way to Venice. We had less than a day here but I wanted to make the most of it, even though I was coming down with a cold!
We explored the beautiful Italian streets, graffiti embellished piazzas and old shops. We also made the most of the foodie offerings and I can highly recommend the pizza slices which are huge and cost less than £2! The famous Trattoria Ana Maria was recommended to us by our hotel and we loved it!
If you're in the mood for coffee, any of the cafes along the piazza of San Stefano are a great bet. We could have stayed all day if we didn't have a train to catch, which we were late for. As usual.

Eric Explores Bologna and Modena, Italy ????????
Long awaited episode on Bologna and Modena, Italy. I travel around Emilia-Romagna; Italy's breadbasket in search of life changing food. Tortellini in brodo, Bolognese, Prosciutto di Parma, truffle, etc. Hint: It didn't disappoint!
Be sure to watch until the end to discover the real balsamic vinegar as I sample aceto balsamico at a multi-generational home.
