Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | New Glarus (#805)
[Original Airdate: January 31, 2019]
It doesn’t take long to figure out the heritage of New Glarus. If the Swiss flags or the edelweiss at Brenda’s Blumenladen don’t give it away, the Alpine architecture and the brown Swiss cows all over town sure will! You know that people are proud when they name their organizations after the city. That’s just what New Glarus Brewing Company, New Glarus Welding, New Glarus Kinderchor and the New Glarus Hotel Restaurant did, which made them really easy for John to find. And he was happy to be “Swissified” by Chef Roland Furst, cultural expert Peter Etter and Swiss shop owner Esther Zgraggen. He was surprised when he was asked to milk the animals at the Voegeli and Lucky Dog farms, but at least he was good at it! John may never get to the original Glarus in Switzerland, but who cares? New Glarus is better anyway!

SUMMARY
=======
Wisconsin ( (listen)) is a U.S. state located in the north-central United States, in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. It is bordered by Minnesota to the west, Iowa to the southwest, Illinois to the south, Lake Michigan to the east, Michigan to the northeast, and Lake Superior to the north. Wisconsin is the 23rd largest state by total area and the 20th most populous. The state capital is Madison, and its largest city is Milwaukee, which is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan. The state is divided into 72 counties.
Wisconsin's geography is diverse, having been greatly impacted by glaciers during the Ice Age with the exception of the Driftless Area. The Northern Highland and Western Upland along with a part of the Central Plain occupies the western part of the state, with lowlands stretching to the shore of Lake Michigan. Wisconsin is second to Michigan in the length of its Great Lakes coastline.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, a large number of European settlers entered the state, many of whom emigrated from Germany and Scandinavia. Like neighboring Minnesota, the state remains a center of German American and Scandinavian American culture.
Wisconsin is known as America's Dairyland because it is one of the nation's leading dairy producers, particularly famous for its cheese. Manufacturing, especially paper products, information technology (IT), cranberries, ginseng and tourism are also major contributors to the state's economy.
Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Door County's Quiet Side (#811)
[Original Airdate: March 21, 2019]
Quiet must be a relative term since the Lake Michigan side of Door County was pretty loud and active when John was there in October of 2018. Then again, maybe it was John who was loud and active!
But he was also completely impressed by Waseda Farms and Door County EMS’s unbelievable boat, awed by the married and incredible artists at Martinez Studio, and soothed and entertained by pianist Dan Meunier. He was mostly surprised (and sometimes completely confused) by the Walloon speakers, rejuvenated on the grounds and in the chapel at Bjorklunden, and inspired as he hiked at Cave Point. He was satiated with Swedish limpa bread at Town Hall Bakery, lobster at Harbor Fish Market and Grille, and the famous pecan rolls at Grandma’s Swedish Bakery at Rowley’s Bay Resort.
And just so you know, not even one of the people he met was quiet about how much they love living, working and playing in this area of Door County.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Mayville (#706)
[Latest Airdate: May 24, 2018]
[Original Airdate: February 15, 2018]
John came up with a new name for Mayville, this wonderful community in Dodge County Wisconsin, by accident. He couldn't help but think of Mayberry, what with the sheriff's car and the charming, old downtown buildings. So the combination of the May and the berry came out as Merry, and a ville is really a town, right? So John's new name for this idyllic community was born: Merrytown!
Believe us, it's easy to be merry here. Sweet Ginger Vintage, the wonderful old buildings and historical sites, VFW Bingo, harness racing and the Mayberry Sherriff's car all harken back to a simpler time. Big companies like Mayville Limestone Quarry, MEC and Metalcraft energize this area. And the Natural Way, Open Door Coffeehouse, Flyway Clay Slayers, the Mayville High School Show Choir and Fit 4 You Bootcamp all brought smiles to John --- for different reasons.
See? Mayville could be Merrytown because it really describes this charming place very well.

SUMMARY
=======
The Driftless Area is a region in Minnesota, Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois, and northeastern Iowa of the American Midwest that was never glaciated. Colloquially, the term is expanded to include the broader incised Paleozoic Plateau, which contains deeply-carved river valleys and extends into southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa. The region includes elevations ranging from 603 to 1,719 feet (184 to 524 m) at Blue Mound State Park and covers an area of 24,000 square miles (62,200 km2). The rugged terrain is due both to the lack of glacial deposits, or drift, and to the incision of the upper Mississippi River and its tributaries into bedrock.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Jefferson (#803)
[Original Airdate: January 17, 2019[
In Jefferson, it’s all about Gemuetlichkeit. And even though an Irish guy like John couldn’t pronounce it, he sure could feel it! Who wouldn’t feel happy and welcome after walking through the renovated downtown, talking with plein air artists as they worked, visiting with Sister Grace at St. Colletta’s and eating Wedl’s hamburgers and Bon Ton’s bakery.
But John had some unique experiences that really defined the feeling. He sang with five G-Day Queens, hid the Mecki, watched the goats mow the island, and saw kittens being born at the Jefferson humane society! Believe him – there’s no place else with Jefferson’s Gemuetlichkeit!

The ancient Yew of Leigh Woods - Bristol
Taxus baccata is a conifer native to western, central and southern Europe, northwest Africa, northern Iran and southwest Asia.[2] It is the tree originally known as yew, though with other related trees becoming known, it may now be known as English yew,[3] or European yew.
It is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree, growing 10–20 metres (33–66 ft) (exceptionally up to 28 metres (92 ft)) tall, with a trunk up to 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) (exceptionally 4 metres (13 ft)) diameter. The bark is thin, scaly brown....
Educational trail:
An educational trail (or sometimes educational path), nature trail or nature walk is a specially developed hiking trail or footpath that runs through the countryside, along which there are marked stations or stops next to points of natural, technological or cultural interest. These may convey information about, for example, flora and fauna, soil science, geology, mining, ecology or cultural history. Longer trails, that link more widely spaced natural phenomena or structures together, may be referred to as themed trails or paths.
In order to give a clearer explanation of the objects located at each station, display boards or other exhibits are usually erected, in keeping with the purpose of the trail. These may include: information boards, photographs and pictures, maps or plans, display cases and models, slides, sound or multimedia devices, facilities to enable experimentation and so on. The routes are regularly maintained.
Woodland:
Woodland /ˈwʊdlənd/ (About this sound listen) is a low-density forest forming open habitats with plenty of sunlight and limited shade. Woodlands may support an understory of shrubs and herbaceous plants including grasses. Woodland may form a transition to shrubland under drier conditions or during early stages of primary or secondary succession. Higher density areas of trees with a largely closed canopy that provides extensive and nearly continuous shade are referred to as forests.
Extensive efforts by conservationist groups have been made to preserve woodlands from urbanization and agriculture. The woodlands in Northwest Indiana being an example, having been preserved as part of the Indiana Dunes.[1][2][3]
**United Kingdom - Woodland is used in British woodland management to mean tree-covered areas which arose naturally and which are then managed, while forest is usually used in the British Isles to describe plantations, usually more extensive, or hunting Forests, which are a land use with a legal definition and may not be wooded at all.[4] The term ancient woodland is used in British nature conservation to refer to any wooded land that has existed since 1600, and often (though not always) for thousands of years, since the last Ice Age[4] (equivalent to the American term old-growth forest).
**North America - Woodlot is a closely related American term which refers to a stand of trees generally used for firewood. While woodlots often technically have closed canopies, they are so small that light penetration from the edge makes them ecologically closer to woodland than forest.
**In Australia, a woodland is defined as an area with sparse (10–30%) cover of trees, and an open woodland has very sparse (less than 10%) cover. Woodlands are also subdivided into tall woodlands, or low woodlands, if their trees are over 30 m (98 ft) or under 10 m (33 ft) high respectively. This contrasts with forests, which have greater than 30% cover by trees...
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.

SUMMARY
=======
