Visiting Denali National Park and Preserve, National park in Alaska, United States
Denali /dɨˈnaːli/ (also known as Mount McKinley, its former official name)[6] is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190.5 m) above sea level. At some 18,000 ft (5,500 m), the base-to-peak rise is the largest of any mountain situated entirely above sea level.[7] With a topographic prominence of 20,156 feet (6,144 m) and a topographic isolation of 4,629 miles (7,450 km), Denali is the third most prominent and third most isolated peak after Mount Everest and Aconcagua. Denali National Park and Preserve Tundra Wilderness Tour 05-28-2012
Denali National Park & Preserve is a six million acre national park 250 miles north of Anchorage Alaska, deep the heart of Alaskan wilderness. My Denali Tundra Wilderness tour took me 53 miles into the park on a terrific 8+ hour adventure. There is plenty of daylight to work with up there and I highly recommend this trip if you ever get to Denali.
How fortunate I am. Not only did I get to visit the great state of Alaska, Denali National Park and Preserve and observe wild animals in their natural surroundings but, as a bonus... my tour guide and host for the day was Bruce Lee. Bruce is the 1998 Yukon Quest sled dog Champion. The Yukon Quest is an annual sled dog race which runs between Whitehorse, Yukon and Fairbanks, Alaska. The race is approximately 1,600 km (1,000 miles) long. Bruce is now retired from racing but still active in dog sledding. He is breeding Alaskan sled dogs, working as an analyst for the Iditarod Insider covering the annual Iditarod sled dog race and thankfully for us, in the warm months he is working with the National Park Service.
Bruce provided the best tour narration I've ever experienced. It was a straight to the point, fact filled, no frills commentary on the nature of Alaska and it's wildlife. You could tell he has a real love for the wildlife. Thank you Bruce for a very memorable trip. Wildlife observed: Moose, Caribou, Grizzly Bear, Red Tail Fox, Grey Wolf, Dall Sheep, Ground Squirrel, Willow Ptarmigan
Mount McKinley, or Denali The High One is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,320 feet. Measured by topographic prominence (mountain top to surrounding land base), it is the third most prominent peak in the world after Mount Everest and Aconcagua. It is the centerpiece of Denali National Park and Preserve.
Below are links for Denali National Park and Preserve, a couple of videos of Bruce Lee the 1998 Yukon Quest Champion doing his Iditarod analyst job and a Wikipedia article about the Yukon Quest dog sled race.
This was truly a trip for me to remember...

20150708: Day 31, Denali Shuttle Tour
20150708: Denali Shuttle Bus Tour
Exploring Denali National Park via a Denali Shuttle Bus
The 8th of July 2015, a Wednesday, was our 31st travel day. This video is part 3 of 3, covering our Shuttle Bus Tour of Denali Park on the 8th of July, 2015.
After dropping off the pups at the Tonglen Lake Kennel on the 7th of July, we were on the road early on the 8th of July arriving at the Wilderness Access Center around 07:30 AM. We boarded the tour bus and were on our way into the park shortly after 9:00 AM. The tour lasted for over 8 hours, the weather was mixed from overcast to rain...with a bit of smoke in the air from fires still raging near Fairbanks.
The video covers highlights of the tour, including both video and photographic segments. Of special note: we've included views from Eielson Visitor Center (66 Mile Point) from 3 different days; 6, 7, and 8 July 2015 so that you may get an idea of what to expect. Denali is only visible about 20% of the time! During our tour on the 8th of July, we were NOT able to see Denali. The folks on the 7th of July tour were lucky to see the road beneath them due to the smoke. However...on the 6th of July Denali revealed herself! Too bad we couldn't have booked our trip on the 6th!
Upon returning to the Wilderness Access Center we headed for the Tonglen kennels to retrieve our pups...which enjoyed a bath and a bit of grooming during their stay. We also visited the Tonglen Cafe...picking up a plate of gourmet food for dinner that night...which included reindeer sausage.
These are the YouTube videos we've posted regarding the Denali segment of our Alaskan road trip:
