Fun Free Things To Do In Denver
Fun Free Things To Do In Denver: Denver, the capital of Colorado, is an American metropolis dating to the Old West era. Known as the mile high city, a jumping off point for some great skiing and being one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana.
HEART OF ART
Denver's Golden Triangle Creative District neighborhood brims with more than 30 innovative art galleries and artists' studios showcasing the innovative wares of nationally renowned talent and regional up-and-comers. Super fun walk to do with lots of cool photo ops.
COLORADO STATE CAPITOL TOUR
The Colorado State Capitol, modeled after the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., is a stunning spectacle embellished with stained glass depicting events and people inherent to Colorado, coupled with gorgeous Colorado white granite, rose onyx and yule marble. This is one of the only places in the world you will find rose onyx. It has only been found in a quarry in Colorado and 90% of the rose onyx currently known to be in existence was used within the Colorado State Capitol.
Blue Bear was my entire families favorite part of Denver just because it was way bigger than we anticipated. The 40-foot-high bear, which injects a welcome sense of fun and playfulness into the convention center experience, is the creation of local artist Lawrence Argent. It was installed in 2005 and has quickly become a bona fide Mile High City icon – and a can’t-miss photo op for tourists and locals alike. We are a sucker for bears in our family having lived in Alaska and seen them in the wild. We love all things mountains.
Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception: Open to the public but definitely a place of worship. We’ve been to a few basilica’s and some of them feel more like a tourist destination but this one although absolutely stunning was very calm and only full of worshippers. We didn’t stay long due to the sacred vibe we got and not wanting to interrupt people’s prayers but it is worth seeing for its splendor.
DIKEOU COLLECTION
There's nowhere else you're going to see a pair of inflatable, 16-foot-tall rubber bunnies, right? One of The Mile High City's most fascinating art locales, The Dikeou Collection is a private collection of contemporary art, with photography, drawings, sculptures, and installations by more than 25 artists from around the world. Free and open to the public, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Super psychedelic and some of it is interactive which my daughter and husband LOVED!
UNITED STATE MINT TOUR
Tragically we did not get to do this but we wanted to SOO bad. They are closed on Fridays.
To see where your currency is conceived (sorry, no free handouts), follow the money trail to the Denver U.S. Mint. The free, 45-minute tours are led by knowledgeable guides and provide a fascinating look into the history of coinage. Both kids and adults will love getting up close and personal with the shiny pocket change that streams off the production lines. Tours are available Mon.–Thurs.
Denver City Library- If you are like us and like a place to relax for a few minutes or an hour with the kids the Denver City Public Library has a fantastic book selection and extremely comfortable seats in their kids section. We stopped here and recharged our batteries.
Thank you for watching our adventure. Now go out there, make your own and tell me all about it. Until next time. Keep traveling.
Colorado State Capitol Building - VIDEO TOUR (Denver, Colorado)
Visiting the Colorado State Capitol Building! Seems like a hangout for locals and skateboarders. The capitol building is open to the public from 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
Colorado State Capitol Building
Address: 200 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203
Height: 272′
Hours: Opens 7:30AM
Architects: Elijah E. Myers, Frank E. Edbrooke
The Colorado State Capitol Building, located at 200 East Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado, United States, is the home of the Colorado General Assembly and the offices of the Governor of Colorado and Lieutenant Governor of Colorado. The building is intentionally reminiscent of the United States Capitol. Designed by Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed in the 1890s from Colorado white granite, and opened for use in November 1894. The distinctive gold dome consists of real gold leaf, first added in 1908, commemorating the Colorado Gold Rush. The building is part of Denver's Civic Center area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Civic Center Historic District in 1974, and became part of the Denver Civic Center National Historic Landmark District in 2012.Serving as the beginning of the Capitol Hill district, the historic building sits slightly higher than the rest of downtown Denver. The main entrance hall is open 180 feet (55 m) to the top of the dome, about the height of an 18-story building. Additionally, the official elevation of Denver is measured outside the west entrance to the building, where the fifteenth step is engraved with the words One Mile Above Sea Level. From this step, at 5,280 feet (1,609 m), the sun can be seen setting behind the Rocky Mountains. A second mile high marker was set in the 18th step in 1969 when Colorado State University students resurveyed the elevation. In 2003, a more accurate measurement was made with modern means, and the 13th step was identified as being one mile (1.6 km) high, where a 3rd marker was installed. The interior of the building uses copious amounts of Colorado Rose Onyx, a rare rose marble from a quarry near Beulah. The amount used in the building consumed the entire known supply. White Yule Marble from the quarries near Marble, Colorado was also used throughout the capitol for the floors. Many designs have been found in the marble including an image resembling George Washington and another of Molly Brown.A major safety upgrade project, funded by the Colorado State Historical Fund, was started in 2001 and completed in 2009. The design by Fentress Architects added modern safety features, like enclosed stair towers, that blend in with the original architecture. Many of the windows are stained glass, depicting people or events related to the history of Colorado. The halls are decorated with portraits of every president of the United States.
One of the contractors for the construction of the Colorado State Capitol building was Illinois building contractor William Douglas Richardson, who was the president of the W. D. Richardson Construction Company. Richardson had participated in numerous major building contracts throughout the United States, and was interconnected with the Jacob Bunn and John Whitfield Bunn network of corporations.

U.S. Presidentes Exhibit at Eloise May Library in Denver, CO
U.S. Presidents is an itinerant art exhibit going around public libraries and public schools in Colorado. The idea is that art be accessible to everyone, especially our kids. By looking at my art, I want people, especially kids to go “WOW!, that is cool, I’d like to be able to do something like that one day” and by knowing my statement of being a self-taught artist, kids and adults alike get motivated to create on the idea that art is something that can be accomplished by anyone so long as that anyone believes he or she can do it. The creation process requires an incentive, a motivation that can sometimes be found in eye appeal, and the beauty contained within a piece of art.
Why U.S. Presidents? Because the history of a country is important to its citizens to understand society better. By learning our past, we can understand our present better and have a better feel of the future. The presidents I have chosen hold, in my own point of view, an important episode of the history of this country which I have learned to love as an immigrant.
U. S. Presidents has been at Belmar Public Library, Deane Elementary School, East High School and is currently at Lincoln High School for the month of November. Next month the show will be travelling to Eloise May Library and remaining there for the whole month of December. In January, the exhibit will be going to West High School in Denver.
The exhibit will be available for any school or library, who wishes to host it for one month as of January, 2015. The requirements are simple: 1. a wall space, glass cage or any type of space ample enough to fit six canvas paintings that measure 30”X24” each (as shown in photo) and 2. The space has to be within eyesight of teachers or librarians for safety reasons. If interested about hosting this show, please contact the artist, Arturo Garcia at 720 495 1407 or arturogarciafineart@gmail.com or visit arturogarciafineart.com

On November 19, 2014, the Immersive Education Initiative announced that Bent’s Old Fort, a unit of the United States National Park Service located on the Santa Fe Trail in Colorado’s Otero County, will be reconstructed virtually in the video game Minecraft and also as a fully immersive 3D virtual reality (VR) environment.
One of several new activities under the Initiative’s Immersive Arts and Culture program, Immersive Bent’s Old Fort is being developed in collaboration with the United States Department of the Interior National Park Service, the City of La Junta Colorado, Otero Junior College, and Colorado’s East Otero School District.
Through the Initiative’s Learn to Earn program students in Colorado, working in collaboration with Stanford University’s Architecture Design Program, will actively participate in reconstructing the fort in both Minecraft and virtual reality (VR).
Immersive Bent’s Old Fort, along with corresponding history curricula and teaching materials, will be available free of charge to the general public and to schools around the world.
Online virtual tours of the immersive fort will be available to schools as a complement to the in-person tours currently conducted on-site at the fort by National Park Service rangers. For details visit
CASTLE OF THE PLAINS
Known as the “Castle of the Plains,” Bent's Old Fort was a 1830s - 1840s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. A unique center of cultural exchange at the time no less than seven different languages were spoken at the fort including English, Spanish, French, and numerous American Indian languages. Today, living historians recreate the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of the past with guided tours, demonstrations and special events.
Bent’s Old Fort served as an instrument of Manifest Destiny and a catalyst for change in the United States. The fort’s influence with the Plains Indians and its political and social connections in Santa Fe helped pave the way for the U.S. occupation of the West and the annexation of Mexico’s northern province during the U.S.-Mexican War. Along with El Camino Real, the Santa Fe Trail was part of a trade network linking Europe, New York, and St. Louis with Santa Fe and Mexico City. Opened in 1821, the Santa Fe Trail followed old trade routes established by American Indians that were later used by Spanish, Mexican and American troops, traders and other travelers.
Development of Immersive Bent’s Old Fort begins in January 2015.
PARTICIPATE: Schools, sponsors and corporate collaborators are welcome to participate. For details on how to participate contact the Immersive Bent's Old Fort committee at

U.S. Constitution NOT void where prohibited by law !!
HELP KEEP AMAGANSETT PRESS ON THE ROAD:
We believe that many of our rights and civil liberties as American citizens on American soil are at great risk and that a simple act of civil disobedience has the power to effect great change. While we have no interest or intention in breaking any law, we are willing to stand up for freedom and the constitution at any time and at any place and do so in a responsible and productive manner. It is our goal to create free and open discussion whenever possible in an effort to educate both ourselves and anyone with a desire to learn. A well known rule of government is that ignorance is no excuse for the law. It is our stand that we as Americans have been either uninformed or misinformed regarding our laws and rights for far too long. We are not attorneys or scholars, however we have been involved in professional photography for over 30 years and have had our rights and freedoms challenged more times than we can remember. No one group or person has the ability to effect change across the board, however we are committed to doing our part by continuing to stand up for our constitutional right to free press and the right to take photographs and video in public. All donations will be used exclusively to further this cause. We want to thank you in advance for your support of what we do and want you to know that we are committed to working harder than ever to defend our rights, your rights and the Freedom to Film in Public!!
