Derby Lane, the St. Petersburg Kennel Club, is the oldest continuously operating greyhound track in the world. The inaugural race was held on the afternoon of January 3rd, 1925. Scenes from the 2001 Soderbergh film, Ocean's Eleven, were shot at Derby Lane.
The track is 21 feet wide, features a straightaway of 243 feet and the length of the stretch is 458 feet. The lure at Derby Lane is called 'Hareson Hare' by the race callers. Before the race, trainers, dressed in black, parade the dogs and then take them to the starting box.
At the end of a dog's career (aged four to six), it will be kept for breeding, adopted or euthanized.

The 2015 BetAmerica Daytona 550 winner brought the crown home with her to Derby Lane in January, and has been the pride of the St. Petersburg oval throughout the year. To top it off, she captured another major stakes race in March, winning the Derby Lane Sprint Classic. Adding to these impressive wins, the “blonde bombshell” also finished second in the Weaver Memorial and the Inaugural Stakes. Husker Magic was twice ranked number one in the UGR Top 25 polls. This type of resume is what earned her the UGR Top greyhound for 2015.
Husker Magic possesses a nice break, and a trademark strong rush to the turn. Once on the lead, she is tough to catch, as proven by her impressive 96 lifetime wins. The 2015 All-American is not one dimensional; she won the national championship by coming from off the pace. For the second consecutive year, this talented female also recorded a streak of eleven consecutive victories. Husker Magic will attempt to repeat her magical January performance in Daytona, and no one should be surprised if this female gets what she wants.
