The Deserted Village, Achill Island
A walk around the Deserted Village in Achill, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
The Deserted Village at Slievemore consists of some 80 - 100 stone cottages located along a mile long stretch of road on the southern slopes of Slievemore mountain. While some of these dwellings were occupied as summer 'booley' homes within living memory, the area itself is rich in archaeological artefacts including megalithic tombs dating from the Neolithic period some 5,000 years ago. Local field systems and site remnants indicate that settlement in this area dates from at least early Mediaval times.
Stone lintel, Deserted Village, Achill Island Slievemore is the largest and most recently abandoned of several 'booley' settlements on Achill Island. The practice of booleying, or transhumance, was continued in Achill long after it was abandoned in other parts of Ireland and western Europe. It refers to the practice of living in different locations during the summer and winter periods, primarily to allow cattle to graze in summer pasture. The cottages at Slievemore were used as summer dwellings within living memory by families from the villages of Dooagh and Pollagh. However, the larger story of the Deserted Village at Slievemore is more complex than the abandonment of booleying.

Walking in Ireland - Deserted Village & Annagh Strand on Achill Island
A walk on stunning Achill Island in County Mayo, Ireland. A place of real beauty. Exploring the Deserted Village and heading for the isolation of the surrounding hills. On the way finding abandoned quarries, hilltop forts and to die for views over the coast and Slievemore Mountain.
A steep drop brings the coast and the lowest corrie lough in Ireland, nestled at a shoreline being eaten by the power of the ocean, beneath Croaghaun Mountain. A place where very few have walked I am sure and well worth the effort. A steep climb back ensures a double dose of pleasure!

This deserted village carries a sadness and melancholy energy. It is certainly not to be rushed through but rather taken in bit by bit. Fantastic scenery and landscape.

Last 2 surviving siblings who grew up in a deserted village make emotional return | SWNS TV
The last two surviving siblings of a family who grew up in a village deserted for 100 YEARS have made an emotional return to the ruins of their former home. Anthony Callaghan, 78, was the final child to be born in Slievemore off the west coast of Ireland - where he grew up with brothers and sisters including Annie, 85. The tiny community was abandoned in the 1850s during the potato famine - but one hardy family remained.

The Deserted Village Ireland
Close by Dugort, at the base of Slievemore mountain (671 metres) lies the Deserted Village. The village is divided into three areas called Tuar, Tuar Riabach and Faiche. There are approximately 100 houses in the village, aligned north-south and parallel to each other.brbrThe atmosphere of the Deserted Village is unique; it's remoteness; a feeling of almost intruding on those who lived there.The houses were built of unmortared stone, which means that no cement or mortar was used to hold the stones together. Each house consisted of just one room and this room was used as kitchen, living room, bedroom and even stable.brbrThe doorways were east-facing, while one small window was built in the north-east wall. While one or two houses may have had a small stable built on to the end of the house, most families had to share their house with cows and other livestock, who would be brought into the house at night and tied at southern end. The tethering rings can still be seen in the walls.brbrThe most of the houses had opposing doorways to facilitate families on their daily task of milking cows. The cow was taken in one door, milked, and then taken out through the opposing door.brbrInside many houses, a shallow channel or drain in the floor led into a manure pit outside the building. This feature along with the opposing doorways suggests an earlier building phase.brbrAccording to archaeologists the field systems and the lazy beds found in this area indicate several occupation phases. Also some remains suggest there was a settlement here during the Anglo-Norman period.brbrThe village was gradually abandoned because of the many evictions for non-payment of rent during Sr Richard O’Donnell’s tenure, the 1845-49 famines and the emigration throughout the successive years.brbrUntil 1940s the village was used as a booley in summertime.

Unique Family Reunion in Achill Island’s Deserted Village.

Annie Ward, 85 and Anthony Callaghan, 78 are they only living people to have grown up in Achill Island’s Deserted Village, also know as Slievemore. Their family moved out in 1948, almost 100 years after all their neighbours had left following the famine. In July 2019, Annie and Anthony made an emotional return to their ancestral home 71 years are leaving it. On this occasion they were accompanied by over 50 family members for this very special and very unique family reunion

Welcome to Achill Islands! Its my first proper day on the island and we go exploring! We start at Achill Sound and make our way to the Deserted Village (settled since the Medieval Times) at Slievemore for our first walk amongst the sheep! We then rounded off the day by listening to some amazing traditional Irish music at the Annex Inn!
