Design Society in Shekou, Shenzhen
Design Society is a new cultural landmark and a symbol of the Chinese city of Shenzhen’s evolution from sweatshop to creative economy. Designed by star Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, it houses the first overseas outpost of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
V&A Gallery at Design Society, Shekou
The V&A Gallery at Design Society is part of the V&A's largest international initiative in its history. With over 250 objects from its permanent collection on display, it offers local audiences a unique opportunity to explore the historical and geographical diversity of its holdings, while exploring critical issues about design. Special to this project, several new made-in-Shenzhen objects have been acquired, and sit side-by-side with other objects from the collection, creating links between design in Shenzhen and elsewhere in the world.

Design Society Shenzhen 2018
The Works:V&A's Design Society in Shenzhen & singer-songwriter Kiri T
This week we’re heading to Shenzhen to take a look at what’s been described as “the first outpost in Asia” of one of London’s great museums, the Victoria and Albert Museum. Also known as V&A the museum has been collaborating with the state-owned China Merchants Shekou since 2014 to set up Design Society, the first major museum in China devoted to design. Design Society says it wants to be a place that inspires action, stimulating the growing design scene in Southern China as well as encouraging awareness of how design can change society. The museum opened its doors to the public last month.
New York-based singer-songwriter Kiri T was born in Hong Kong and has worked with such local names as Denise Ho (HOCC), Joey Yung, Waa Wei, Endy Chow and Jan Lam. Like many children growing up in middle class Hong Kong families, singer-songwriter Kiri T learned ballet, violin and the piano when she was young. Although she was trained in classical disciplines, which she found a little stifling, she was more inspired by pop. She earned her first publishing deal at the age of fourteen, working with Denise Ho. After some time working with the local industry she decided to broaden her horizons again and went on to study electronic production and design at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She’s with us in the studio to give us a preview of her new LP, due to be released this week.
New business model in industry design in South China's Shenzhen
Shenzhen in south China’s Guangdong Province was once known to the world for “Shanzhai,”or copycat products. But the city has begun to attach more importance to industrial design and innovation as an increasing number of creative products have sprung up.

Designed in China - Guide to Chinese Innovation and Design | A China Icons Video
Ever wondered why most of what you buy is 'made in China'?
This handy guide explains how China became the king of manufacturing and exporting, bagging itself over US$2 trillion from overseas sales every year. It all began with economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping and, 30 years on, China's on a mission to design as well as produce these goods.
Leading experts discuss whether home-grown designers will succeed in launching brands to rival international successes like Ikea and Gucci.
With thanks to Vogue China TV, the Nixon Library and Museum (NARA) and our three leading experts:
Professor Jan Stael von Holstein of Tongji University, China
Design writer and curator Zara Arshad

Shenzhen Mocape is located north of the Shenzhen Civic Centre; it is also the last major public cultural project in Shenzhen.
The building is an integration of the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Arts and the Urban Planning Exhibition Halls. Surface materials of glass, perforated plate, and stone extend and twist along the steel structure, creating a complicated architecture full of vitality. However, the unique façade form also created great difficulties in lighting design. Lighting design conquered multiple challenges and successfully inte-grated within the building, neatly and sharply presented a clear and translucent city “rock”.
Values of Design – Trailer
At the end of 2017, the V&A will launch its largest international initiative to-date, a new design gallery in Shenzhen, China. The gallery is part of a new cultural hub called Design Society, the result of a pioneering collaboration between China Merchants Shekou and the V&A. The opening V&A exhibition, Values of Design, will explore how we measure the value of design, and how values drive the design process.
