South Africa Bicycle Trip. Johannesburg - Capetown.
From Johannesburg to Capetown. Total route was 3500 km, of which 2177 km by bicycle.
Detour: Southern Africa by Bicycle
In April 2016 I began a solo, self-supported bicycle tour of the southern portion of the African continent. The trip spanned 4 months, 6 countries, and 5,857 miles. This film documents that journey.
Expeditions like this begin twice. They first arise in the imagination. Months or years later, they begin a second time in a very practical and visceral way with the first pedal stroke. For me, this second start occurred in a small village in Eastern Province, Zambia where I had served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two years. Leaving this small village, my route meandered across the continent, ending in Capetown, South Africa (link to route:
Over the course of my ride, I went through three courses of antibiotics, one course of de-wormer, a 4oz container of Dr. Bronners soap, two tires, an ungodly number of calories, and miraculously- no punctures. I covered on average 100.26 kilometers (62.3 miles) per day of cycling. Out of 130 nights on the road, I spent three sleeping in a bed. The rest of the nights were spent camping in my one-person tent. All-in-all I spent exactly $1,170 USD. This includes all food, visa fees, accommodation, and bicycle parts. Averaged out over the full trip, that comes out to $9 USD per day, with 5.79 of those daily dollars going towards food.
Not only did I spend very little money during the expedition, I also spent very little money preparing for the expedition. I bought an old second hand Trek hard tail mountain bike for around $200 USD and re-built it from the frame up. I then drew up some sketches of front and rear pannier racks and worked with some local Zambian welders (paying $15 USD) to make them out of the only material available- 10mm rebar- which was strong, but also incredibly heavy. The welders also helped me build two extra-large water bottle cages ($5 USD) that each held a two liter bottle. Then I spent a solid two weeks making panniers ($9 USD) out of old plastic water jugs, an old slack line, and the zippers and buckles from a chewed-up backpack (link to equipment photos: All the other bike specific equipment (tools, spare parts, bike shorts, odometer, etc.) probably came out to around $110 USD. If you don’t count all the backpacking equipment I already owned, the total equipment cost for the trip was under $350 USD.

Cycling South Africa
For the last country on my Trans-African cycling journey, South Africa, I didn't have enough videos to make a short movie. Therefore I included a recap of the 23 countries I crossed after leaving Switzerland.
This video features the rural landscape of the Northern Cape and Western Cape: the deserted Namaqualand and its flowers, the mountain passes near Leliefontein, the coastal villages between Lutzville and Saldanha, the crossing of Cape Town, and the very scenic route to the Cape of Good Hope.
I also added a bit of my return to Europe via cargo ship, but not as much as in my longer video of the cargo trip journey.
More details and stories on:

Places traveled in South Africa:
Vioolsdrif, Springbok, Kamieskroon, Leliefontein, Garies, Kotzesrus, Lutzville, Doringbaai, Lambert's Bay, Eland's Bay, Velddrif, Vredenburg, Saldanha, Langebaan, Cape Town, Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak Drive, Cape of Good Hope.
Last 2 Days Of Cape Town Adventures!
From hiking in the rain at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden to hanging out at the Canal Walk mall and making a slight detour through Bonteheuwel on the Cape Town flats followed by dodging more rain by going to the V&A Waterfront mall, going up Signal Hill to watch the sunset and finish with a short session at the Shred indoor skatepark before heading back home. Hilarious last two days from our trip to Cape Town South Africa. Was great to extend the trip at Sun City a few extra days with Zack Yankush and Levi Weidmann.

Southern African Safari
This presentation is dedicated to Louis, Lizelle and Carol, whose hospitality complemented the natural beauty, entrepreneurial vivacity and cultural depth of South Africa and Botswana during a 2012 trip.
While it is unapologetically lengthy (almost 15 minutes), anything less would be an injustice to the astonishing splendour of Cape Town and the other-worldly moonscape of Kubu Island.
The presentation includes still photography, depicting the awe-inspiring magnificence of Africa's wildlife - including the rare rhino, wild dog and cheetah - as well as video footage of horse- and elephant-back safaris (Horseback Africa and Adventures With Elephants), walking with lions (Horseback Africa), and the world's second largest game reserve, the Central Kalahari.
The viewer will also visit cultural icons such as the imposing Voortrekker Monument, paying homage to the pioneering spirit of the Afrikaner, as well as the Afrikaans Language and Huguenot Monuments.
No trip to South Africa would be complete without a meandering detour through the Cape's illustrious wine routes, particularly Franschhoek.
The presentation concludes with an overnight trip along the Cape's untamed West Coast, famous for fishing villages and mouth-watering seafood!
Nowhere and back run || Snow in Cape town || Roads closed and detour
So this run was a bit smaller than we had hoped initially, but the weather was to blame for that, and boy was it cold the morning of the run. Non the less it was a pretty epic drive, Cape town is truly and amazing city.
We probably had all 4 seasons during the course of the day, from a sunny day, to rain, to hail to snow :)
Guys for every single person that pulled through for the run a massive thank you, these types of events will never be possible without your support.
We are slowly but surely making an impact guys, we have an amazing city, an amazing community and an amazing passion. Thank you peeps, and always remember we are always connected by one road.

US Civil Rights Road Trip Inspires South African Girls
You can't tell the story of Africans in America without talking about slavery and segregation. The struggle for social and racial justice continues today. So watch what happened when a group of young South Africans visited the American South to track the history of civil rights. Hayde Adams FitzPatrick and Betty Ayoub have the story about the trip organized by BRAVE, a South Africa-based nonprofit promoting girls' leadership.

Is this the best road in Africa? | Cairo to Cape Town
Our Odyssey has seen us through the barren Sahara, the dusty, busy cities of North Africa and the wilds of southern Ethiopia. This new Chinese road in Kenya though, is a properly well made road.

Cycle Touring South Africa Garden Route , Chautauqua ( A Cycle Pilgrimage )
This episode of Just One Step is called Chautauqua.
Which is a term from a book ive read a few times called
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance
In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The narrator refers to his philosophical discourse as a 'Chautauqua', referring to the traveling events organized around the U.S. a century ago. ... Radio and television would take their place, but for a period of time this was a peak experience in rural America.
This was my first trip ever , a total distance of 130km through the
Garden route in my home country South Africa.
I traveled light as I had friends I would visit and sleep the night.
The whole journey Is a build up and learning experience for me as my dream one day is to travel back to India and cycle a road called the Leh - Manali Highway.
So each step I take is a step closer to that dream.
I thinned my camera gear down to :
FujiFIlm XT30 - Rokinon 8mm Fish Eye
Insta360 One X
GoPro Hero 7
DJI Mavic Pro
H1 Zoom SOund recorder.
It was a great adventure and I hope you will like my tale.
Keep reaching towards a life you love to live.
