Koblenz, Germany - German Corner (Deutsches Eck), emotional site -
The headland area of Germany where the Rhine River & the Moselle (Mosel) River converge is known as Deutsches Eck (German Corner). Located in Koblenz (aka Coblenz) it is a very impressive sight to behold, with sweeping views of both rivers, and a magnificent statue that dominates the scene. It is the equestrian statue of William I, first German Emperor; it was originally erected in 1897 in appreciation of his merits in the unification of Germany.
The original statue was destroyed during WWII, with this particular statue being a replica that was put in its place in 1993. In addition to being a historical area it is also has high emotional significance to the German people. Needless to say, it is also a highly popular visitor and tourist attraction. In the plaza, there are 16 flags flying, symbolizing the various German states.

Das Deutsche Eck ist eine künstlich aufgeschüttete Landzunge in Koblenz an der Mündung der Mosel in den Rhein. Im Jahr 1897 wurde hier ein monumentales Reiterstandbild des ersten Deutschen Kaisers Wilhelm I. errichtet, das als Denkmal für die Deutsche Reichsgründung 1871 konzipiert war. Das von der Rheinprovinz in Auftrag gegebene Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal stand in Tradition vieler zwischen 1888 und 1918 im deutschsprachigen Raum errichteter Denkmäler.
Der Sockel des im Zweiten Weltkrieg schwer beschädigten Standbildes diente von 1953 bis 1990 als Mahnmal der Deutschen Einheit. Eine Nachbildung der Skulpturengruppe wurde 1993 nach vorausgegangenen kontroversen Diskussionen wieder auf dem Sockel angebracht.
Das Deutsche Eck ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Koblenz und bedeutender Anziehungspunkt für Touristen. Am linksrheinischen Ufer zweigen hier die Rheinanlagen (Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer), am rechten Moselufer das Peter-Altmeier-Ufer ab.
The German corner is an artificially populated land in Koblenz at the mouth of the Moselle in the Rhine. In 1897 a monumental equestrian statue of the first German Emperor William I was erected here, which was conceived as a monument to the German Reichsgründung 1871. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal, commissioned by the Rheinprovinz, stood in the tradition of many monuments erected between 1888 and 1918 in the German-speaking world.
The base of the statue, heavily damaged during the Second World War, served as a memorial to the German Unity from 1953 to 1990. A copy of the sculpture group was put back on the pedestal in 1993 after previous controversial discussions.
The German corner is the landmark of the city of Koblenz and a major attraction for tourists. On the left bank of the Rhine, the Rheinanlagen (Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer) branch off, on the right bank of the Moselle the Peter-Altmeier-Ufer.

This German corner is found in Koblenz Germany and it is where the Rhine and the Moselle Rivers meet. This past Christmas we headed to Germany to visit some friends and on our last day, we stopped in Koblenz Germany to check out is beautiful intersection. While we were there we checked out the William I monument at Deutsches Eck. William was responsible for the unification of Germany which is why there is a statue of him where the two rivers meet. We also took the Koblenz Cable Car to the Fortress Ehrenbreitstein which is across the river from the statue.

This is a short video of a site which is apparently very meaningful to most Germans. The statue is of Wilhelm I, the one who created the German nation in 1871, on his horse. An impressive site. The site is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers and the views from the site of both the Rhine and the Moselle are interesting and impressive.

The establishment of the Teutonic Order at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle in 1216 gave this historic site its name, the “Deutsches Eck” (“German Corner”). Koblenz also owes its name to the meeting point of the Rhine and the Moselle - from “Castellum apud Confluentes”, Latin for “fort at the confluence”, which over time became the current name of Koblenz.
Shortly after Kaiser Wilhelm I’s death, the idea arose of creating a memorial to him, as it was the Kaiser who had brought about the unification of Germany after three years of war. Three years later in 1891, Kaiser Wilhelm II, the grandson of the deceased, chose the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz as the most suitable location. A harbour of refuge in the Moselle estuary was filled in to create space for the memorial. The Deutsches Eck in its present form was created.
