Sullia Payaswini Odabai hanging Bridge
Imagine crossing a river on a long indigenous raft everyday, standing without any support! The picture will give you an idea of what I intend to say. Life would be like a flame in the midst of a blowing wind, without knowing when it would go off.
This has been the plight of the people of Doddery who have been using this raft over several years to cross the Payaswini River at Odabai to and fro Sullia.
Risking their lives everyday, the people of Doddery in Ajjavar village - a majority of those belonging to the backward community- have had to take this journey fraught with insecurity each moment. They had to rely on the raft, which was made of bamboo, which was a risky affair, particularly during the rainy season when the river overflows. The students were the worst-hit.
Finally, the Sullia Rotary Club came forward to find a solution to the problem. Sullia Sri Sharadamba Seva Samiti, through a memorandum had requested the people’s representatives and officials of various departments to construct a hanging bridge for the convenience of Doddery residents while the people’s representatives and departments failed to act on the issue.
Rotary Club, Sullia under the leadership of Dr Prabakar Shishila, a lecturer, decided to construct a hanging bridge. The Rotary Club headed by former president Ramchandra P formed the hanging bridge construction committee to look into the construction works.
An estimate for Rs 15 lac has been prepared for this purpose and works of the bridge have started under the leadership of local engineer Girish Bharadwaj of Ayashilpa, who has a creditable track record of having set several such hanging bridges in the state and Kerala.. The work of building towers on both; the sides is in the last phase. The club desires to complete the bridge works by May this year. But hurdles exist with regard to donations for this cause, with the toal cost estimated at Rs 2.92 lac, which is less that 20 per cent of the project cost.
