This video about my visit to the spectacular Devetashka Cave (Деветашката Пещера) and it is my second stop while on my road trip with my sister.
Devetashka Cave is not to far away from the Krushuna Waterfalls (Part 3).
During communism, Devetashka cave was closed to the public, so I never had a chance to go there. It is a spectacular cave and it is a great way to end the day after a trip to the Krushuna Waterfalls.
Devetashka cave is not too far from the town of Lovech (a beautiful historic town) where you can have an amazing dinner and spend the night at the Varosha Hotel.
There is bathroom outside the cave, but there are no food or water sold there, so bring your own.
The entrance fee is 2 or 3 Bulgarian Levs per person.
In about 30 minutes, you will be able to explore and take photos of the whole cave.
Devetashka cave is only 20 kilometers from Lovech and 16 kilometers from the Krusuna Waterfalls.
It is however, 172 kilometers from Sofia (about 2.5 hours drive).
The actual name of the movie filmed there is the Expendables 2.

Разположена е на около 7 km от Летница и на 15 km североизточно от Ловеч, близо до село Деветаки, на източния бряг на река Осъм. Достъпът до пещерата е по пътека, дълга над километър, която започва малко след отбивката от пътя Ловеч – гр. Левски за село Деветаки в източна посока, но при влажно време е затруднен. След моста има оформен импровизиран паркинг в тревата. Алтернативен път (по-подходящ за малки деца и възрастни хора, тъй като не е стръмен) води до паркинг на около 50 m от пещерата – пътят към него е малко след отбивката за село Деветаки. В някои сезони част от пещерата е затворена поради размножителният период на прилепите.

The Devetashka cave is located 18 kilometers northeast of Lovech and 2 kilometers of the village of Devetaki. The cave is also known as Maarata or Oknata for its seven different-sized holes in the ceiling, through which sunlight penetrates and illuminates the central hall and part of its two fields.
In the beginning of the 1950s, serious explorations of the cave were held, concerning its transformation into a warehouse. The studies showed that the Devetashka cave used to be inhabited (with some interruptions) during almost every historical era. The earliest traces of human presence date back to the middle of the Early Stone Age before about 70,000 years BC. The Devetashka cave is among the cave deposits with the richest cultural artifacts from the Neolithic (6th millennium - 4t h millennium BC).
The entrance of the cave is 35 meters wide and 30 meters high. About 40 meters after the entrance, the cave widens, forming a spacious hall with an area of 2,400 square meters. The height of the hall is 60 meters; at some places it reaches 100 meters.

Lovech is a town located in northwestern Bulgaria.
Lovech consists of two parts, old and new part. Osam River divides the old and new part of the town. Covered Bridge, which was built by Kolyu Ficheto connects the old and the new town of Lovech. Lovech covered bridge is the most famous sight in the City.
In Lovech also there is museum of Vasil Levski, Lovech ethnographic museum and fortress called Hisar.
The town has a long history leading back to the time of the Thracians. Their mark here left Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians and Turks.

The Devetashka cave is located near village of Devetaki (some 15 km northeast from the town of Lovech) on the right shore of the Osam river. It is one of the biggest caves in Bulgaria. It was discovered in 1921, and in 1950s was used as oil depot.
Devetashkata cave is 2.5 km long, and its entrance reaches 35 m in height. Archeologists have proved that the cave was first inhabited sometime in the late palaeolithic era, and served as a home for local inhabitants in the following eras as well – throughout the neolith, eneolith, bronze, and iron eras, the Middle Ages. Some of the most interesting neolithic findings in Bulgaria could be seen in the Devetashka cave.
Nowadays, the cave is declared a monument of culture and a protected natural landmark of national and international significance.

Devetàshka cave (Bulgarian: Деветашката пещера) is a large karst cave around 7 km (4.3 mi) east of Letnitsa and 15 km (9.3 mi) northeast of Lovech, near the village of Devetaki on the east bank of the river Osam, in Bulgaria. The site has been continuously occupied by Paleo humans for tens of thousands of years, served as a shelter for various faunal species during extensive periods and is now home to nearly 30,000 bats.
The site is 35 m (115 ft) wide and 30 m (98 ft) high at the entrance. The cave widens after around 40 m (130 ft), forming a spacious hall with an area of 2,400 m2 (26,000 sq ft), a height of 60 m (200 ft) that can reach up to 100 m (330 ft). Several large openings in the ceiling allow daylight to lighten the vast interior, due to commercial use of the site during the 1950s.

Алтернативен път (по-подходящ за малки деца и възрастни хора, тъй като не е стръмен) води до паркинг на около 50 m от пещерата – пътят към него е малко след отбивката за село Деветаки (посока Ловеч – Левски).
Открита е през 1921 г. Нейната обща дължина е 2442 m, площта – 20 400 m², а височината – 60 m.
На около 40 m навътре от входа има просторна зала с площ 2400 m². Вътре в пещерата има два клона, през единия от които протича рекичка, а другият е сух и топъл. Има красиви сталактити и сталагмити. Сводовете на входа са внушителни.
Освен с археологическите находки пещерата е известна и с многообразието от обитатели. Заради размножителния период на населяващите пещерата бозайници през юни и юли изцяло се затваря за посетители. Там обитават 12 вида защитени земноводни, смок мишкар (включен в Червената книга), южен гребенест тритон, жаба дървесница, обикновена блатна костенурка, шипоопашата костенурка (включена в Световния червен списък), 82 вида птици, които се срещат в района, 13 от които включени в Червената книга, 34 вида бозайници (4 от които включени в Червената книга на България, а 15 – в световния червен списък) и 15 вида прилепи.
От отложения от късен вюрм (среден палеолит) в пещерата са намерени и изследвани от проф. Златозар Боев костните останки на общо 136 вида птици – над 1/3 от състава на съвременната орнитофауна на страната. С това Деветашката пещера се нарежда на първо място сред палеоорнитологичните находища в България.

Първото впечатление, с което може да остане всеки посетител е, че това място е като от филм за някакъв екзотичен остров. Стичащата се вода по скалите сякаш носи някакво приключение, а поточетата, образувани от бистрата вода на реката, вдъхват спокойствие и уют.
Главният водопад се спуска от височина 20 м.Разделя се на няколко ръкава и създава още няколко водопада. Въздухът до водопада е влажен и наситен с водни капки. Местността е напълно непроходима. Без стълбите и направената екопътека не може да се стигне до извора на водопада. Той е скрит в едноименната пещера. До там води тясна пътека, която се провира под варовиковата скала.
В района са изградени много екопътеки, които Ви водят до местните забележителности. Наблизо се намира и Деветашката пещера. До нея може да стигнете след моста на река Осъм по пътя за село Деветаки. Тръгвате по десния бряг по течението на реката. Пътеката е с туристическа маркировка, но на места липсва. Пещерата е с най-голямото преддверие в Европа. Тя е най-голямата от 60-те пещери в района на Деветашкото плато.
Krushuna Falls (Крушунски водопади) are a series of waterfalls in northern Bulgaria, near the village of Krushuna, Letnitsa Municipality, 34 km from the city of Lovech. They are famous with their picturesque landscape and are formed by many travertines. The falls, located in an area known as Maarata, are the biggest travertine cascade in the country, unique with its picturesque scenery, lush vegetation, numerous round-shaped terraces and small natural pools with mineral water.
There is a tourist path leading to the cave where the river springs. There are two smaller waterfalls in the area, one of which is called Malkata Maara. Some other caves are also found in the vicinity - Urushka Maara, Gornik, Devetashka cave.
Remains of the 13-14th century Hesychast Krushuna Monastery dating from the Second Bulgarian Empire can be found nearby.
The main waterfall is about 20 m high and it splits into several smaller ones along its way down the soft limestone rocks. There is a path that allows visitors to go up the river and get to the spring of the waterfall hidden in a cave. Along the way there are steps and bridges so that one can get the best views of the cascades, pools and mossy rocks.

ROM Peștera Devetàshka (bulgară: Деветашката пещера) este o peșteră carstică mare aproximativ 7 km (4,3 mi) est de Letnitsa și 15 km (9,3 mi) nord-est de Lovech, lângă satul Devetaki, pe malul de est al râului Osam, în Bulgaria. Site-ul a fost ocupat continuu de oameni încă din Paleolitic și a servit ca adăpost pentru diverse specii de animaleîn perioade extinse, iar acum găzduiește aproape 30.000 de lilieci.Situl are 35 m lățime și 30 m înălțime la intrare. Peștera se lărgește după aproximativ 40 m, formând o sală spațioasă cu o suprafață de 2.400 m2, o înălțime de 60 m care poate ajunge până la 100 m. Câteva deschideri mari în tavan permit luminii de zi să lumineze vastul interior, datorită utilizării comerciale a site-ului în timpul anilor ’50.
Peștera Devetashka a fost prezentată în filmul de acțiune The Expendables 2, din 2011. Curtea Supremă Administrativă din Bulgaria a declarat că mai multe activități în timpul filmărilor au încălcat reglementările mediului din Bulgaria. Un contractant angajat de echipajul The Expendables a fost ulterior amendat pentru tunderea arbuștilor din fața peșterii.
După un accident mortal în timpul filmării unei cascadorii, echipa de producție s-a confruntat din nou cu autoritățile pentru daunele aduse peșterii. Zgomote puternice, lumini, mulțimi de oameni și incendii în apropierea peșterii, s-ar putea să fi provocat deplasarea unui număr mare de lilieci din peșteră. Cu toate acestea, până la sfârșitul anului 2012, majoritatea liliecilor s-au întors în peșteră.
