Devil's Head Lookout, Pike National Forest, Sedalia, Colorado - Great Short Hike
Spectacular views for 100 miles and 360 degrees. It's a short hike (1 1/2 miles) up to the stairs (143) leading to the ranger's fire watch station that is open to visitors. It's southwest of Sedalia, Colorado, and it's worth visiting. Hint: Get there early to avoid the crowds on the weekends.
Devil's Head Fire Lookout
Devil's Head Fire Lookout Hike - July 3, 2014 - From Thornton the drive is a little over an hour just west of Sedalia, CO so it's best to head out in the morning as Devil's Head Fire Lookout Tower is the highest spot in the area and a magnet for lightning from the storms that tent to roll in in the afternoon. The hike itself is about 1.4 miles to the top with a roundtrip of just under 3 miles. It is uphill the entire way in with a few steep rocky inclines but nothing to worry about. I will admit that the first quarter mile or so my lungs were burning but after acclimating it was no problem. There are several spots along the trail that offer beautiful views. But the ultimate payoff is the view from the fire lookout station. The trail is the perfect mix of sunlight and shade with more than adequate pit stop areas to stop and rest or grab a snack. We took our time enjoying the scenery and taking video and pictures most of the way. At that pace it took us about two hours round trip with a break at the top to eat some fruit. I highly recommend this hike for anyone who loves mountain views and especially for outdoor loving photographers.

Devil's Head hike in Colorado.wmv
This is slides and video from a hike we took in 2010 in Colorado at a place called Devil's Head. It is about a 2 mile hike up to the ranger cabin and tower. At the base of the ranger tower are 143 steps to the lookout tower itself. Once up to the tower we could see for miles and miles. This is a very beautiful place and if you like hiking and are in Colorado I recommend this hike as a great hike. Devil's Head is located 25 miles SW of Sedalia and 40 miles from Downtown Denver. I rate the climb as moderate.
