Craft beer has been on the upward trend for quite some time in Cape Town and there are plenty of places where you can taste these beers right at the source. The Taproom is the restaurant part of the Devil’s Peak Brewery in Salt River. Pull in to taste some of the best “home made” brews (def try the IPA) and enjoy a trendy and scrumptious menu of burgers, gourmet sandwiches and salads.
JASON BAKERY X DEVIL'S PEAK BEER COMPANY
We got stuck into some tasty baked goods with the captain of bread, Jason Lilley, owner and co-founder, along with his sister Brigitte Lilley, of the ever-popular Jason Bakery in Cape Town. There’s no doubt about it that this guy knows what he’s doing when it comes to making great bread and baked masterpieces.
This Imperial Pastry Stout, created and inspired by the Jason Bakery Doughssant - yip you guessed it, a doughnut croissant hybrid, what could be better than this, right?
This doughnut, croissant hybrid hit Cape Town’s shores in early 2013 when Jason decided to take on the challenge to create unique flavour combinations every week. These mouth-watering treats sell out within minutes every Saturday morning, as the crowds flock to get their hands on this weeks’ new and extravagant flavour combinations.
These delectable pastries sparked JC, Devil’s Peak’s head brewer’s, creative juices, as he took up the task to mimic one of these signature doughssants to create an imperial pastry stout, that is sure to blow your mind.
What is a pasty stout you ask? This beer style as is simply as it sounds, a stout that has been inspired by a particular pastry and the brewer attempts to replicate the flavours and components by making use of similar ingredients of a particular pastry.
When we sat down with Jason, we asked him which of the doughssants he had created to date was his favourite, and his answer was the “peanut butter, choc-chip cookie, marshmallow doughssant.” Together we agreed that this would be the pastry that would inspire this pastry stout creation.
To make this beer, we’ve taken homemade marshmallows, supplied by Jason Bakery, added them into the boil, along with cocoa, chocolate malt and biscuit malt to give you those choc-chip cookie flavours, as well as the doughnut, croissant characteristics. The addition peanut butter falvourant to the beer, although subtle in the finished product, it certainly compliments the peanut butter crème pat flavours of the doughssant. Overall giving you the full experience of the doughssant in the beer.
We decided to join forces with this local artisan baker, as Jason’s passion to bring you the real stuff in unfaltering. Real, uncompromised baked products to the South African market, through ensuring the use of the best quality ingredients and true baking practises. And in so doing educating and encouraging consumers on what real and authentic baked products are, and how the choice of ‘real’ is so much better for you. This core ethos of Jason Bakery is what caught our attention and ultimately lead us to include them in our collaboration series, as through this series we aim to recognise true local craftsman that are bringing world-class products to our homes.
Whether you eat it or drink it, this decadently rich, silky smooth, imperial pastry stout is delectable, incredible and oh so bittersweet. Inspired by a one of a kind doughssants, this collab beer and doughssant are too good to miss.

I feel much more diversified in this city than in other parts of southern Africa. I can meet people here from every continent in the world. People from all over North America, Asia, South America and Africa come here. This diversity appears throughout the city. In the center of the city where black people walk, there stands the statue of the Dutchman Jan van Riebeck. He wanted to build a base of supply for ships here to Asia and began bringing in slaves to carry out the plan. Under this tree, slaves traded like goods. They had to build a gorgeous city during the day and be trapped in a dark barn at night. When Jan van Liebeck arrived, there was no infrastructure here, and the land was in need of maintenance. So I needed a work force to do those things. That was the main task of the slaves who were brought here. So the presence of this city now is thanks to our ancestors who were slaves. Although 60,000 people brought to this place died as slaves, their lives have been remembered forever.

A Cape Town hotspot on Long Street offers a wide variety of international beer in a bid to give beer drinkers the same respect as wine fundis.
The Beerhouse has 99 varieties of bottled beer and another 16 on tap.
Some of the beer availble at this conventional pub is flavoured and this gives beer lovers an opportunity to find their perfect brew.
Similar to wine where you have so many different experiences and not only the sauvignon blanc or the chardonnay, the same applies to beer. It's just something that most beer lovers or beer drinkers aren't used to, said Beerhouse owner Randolf Jorberg.
There is a rich and varied selection of beer flavours at the venue and Windermere ciders are also on offer.
We've got the Windermere Cider which is really where you can taste the apple taste which is way more natural. You basically have the meaty taste, the oak taste, the chocolate taste, said Jorberg

Beer tasting at Woodstock Brewery
Woodstock Brewery was such a refreshing stop in the heart of Woodstock, South Africa. After walking up and down the streets of Woodstock, I was exhausted and came across the brewery. They had a variety of brews available including their seasonal and speciality beers. Their staff was friendly and very informative as he explained each beer they offered in detail. Their food menu looked great, and I wished I had more time to have tried it as well. Overall great stop.
