Hiking Diamond Head Crater Hawaii
Diamond Head is the name of a volcanic tuff cone on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu and known to Hawaiians as Lēʻahi, most likely from lae 'browridge, promontory' plus ʻahi 'tuna' because the shape of the ridgeline resembles the shape of a tuna's dorsal fin. Its English name was given by British sailors in the 19th century, who mistook calcite crystals on the adjacent beach for diamonds.
Diamond Head is part of the system of cones, vents, and their associated eruption flows that are collectively known to geologists as the Honolulu Volcanic Series, eruptions from the Koʻolau Volcano that took place long after the volcano formed and had gone dormant. The Honolulu Volcanic Series is a series of volcanic eruption events that created many of Oʻahu's well-known landmarks, including Punchbowl Crater, Hanauma Bay, Koko Head, and Mānana Island in addition to Diamond Head.
Diamond Head, like the rest of the Honolulu Volcanic Series, is much younger than the main mass of the Koʻolau Mountain Range.
The eruption that built up Diamond Head was probably very brief, lasting no more than a few days. It was probably explosive, since when the cinder cone was originally formed, the sea level is thought to have been higher and the vent burst erupted over a coral reef. Another factor probably contributing to the eruption's explosive nature was that rising magma would have come into contact with the water table. The eruption's relatively brief length is thought to explain why the cone today is so symmetrical.
A nearby eruption that took place at about the same time as the Diamond Head eruption was the eruption that built the Black Point lava shield. Since the type of eruptions that built Diamond Head tend to be monogenetic, geologists don't believe that Diamond Head will erupt again.
In 1968, Diamond Head was declared a National Natural Landmark. The crater, also called Diamond Head Lookout was used as a strategic military lookout in the early 1900s. Spanning over 475 acres (including the crater’s interior and outer slopes), it served as an effective defensive lookout because it provides panoramic views of Waikīkī and the south shore of Oahu.
The Diamond Head Lighthouse, a navigational lighthouse built in 1917 is directly adjacent to the crater's slopes. In addition, a few pillboxes are located on Diamond Head’s summit.
Hiking Diamond Head | Oahu, Hawaii
This is our first time hiking a volcano and it was awesome! Fun hike, great view, and so easy to get to on public transportation from Waikiki and Honolulu.
Diamond Head towers over Waikiki on the south side of Oahu. It's only a 6-minute drive from Waikiki Beach hotels, or 20 minutes from downtown Honolulu where we were staying. If you drive in, get there early because there is not much parking available. The parking lot usually fills up by 7am.
We suggest taking the bus and walking up. You can catch bus 2 from downtown or Waikiki and get off at the base of the mountain at Kapiʻolani Community College. The walk up to the ticket booth is only about 15-20 minutes, with nice views along the way.

The Volcanic Diamond Head Crater of Hawaii
Diamond Head Hawaii is a famous volcanic crater, located on the eastern edge of Waikiki’s coastline. The most recognized landmark is known as Leahi (brow of the tuna) in Hawaiian. The crater was named “Diamond Head” by 19th century British sailors saw calcite crystals sparkling in the sunshine and thought they had found diamonds on the crater’s slopes. These “diamonds” were actually shiny calcite crystals that had no value.

Hiking DIAMOND HEAD Crater - Honolulu, Oahu
Hiking DIAMOND HEAD Crater - Honolulu, Oahu, HI
This is a detailed overview hiking one of the worlds most iconic landmarks on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
I suggest arriving at the crater as sunrise to appreciate cool temperatures as you ascend the crater. Bring Sunglasses, Water, Sunscreen, good pair of hiking shoes and CASH as no credit/debit cards are accepted. Entry fee is $1 USD / person.
You may drive and park your automobile in one of the very limited parking spaces inside the crater. DID I MENTION ARRIVING EARLY?
There are a host of concession stands serving hot meals including hamburgers and Hawaii's iconic DOLE PINEAPPLE.
If you plan to arrive via UBER/LYFT, make sure your cell phone battery is near 100% as coverage may be limited in certain areas of the park.

Diamond Head Crater Hike - Oahu, Hawaii | By Aloha Robert
My first Hawaiian Hike
I knew Diamond Head would be a must on my first trip to Hawaii. I heard the views were amazing and the hike was fairly easy. The views did not disappoint but it was pretty somewhat crowded so you couldn’t really go at your own pace without holding up people behind you. The hike wasn’t too bad but towards the top, there are quite a few stairs which can be tiresome. Overall the views from the top were phenomenal, but it was very windy up there, and no less crowded than the hike itself. I would say if you’re visiting for the first time and want to try out a fairly easy hike, definitely try Diamond Head!

About me:
I'm a filmmaker; I like traveling to many places in California looking for the most unique and impressive places to shoot videos. In fact, California is such an amazing state with so many places to visit like art museums and landmarks! But many people don't have the opportunity to visit California because it's very expensive to travel to the Golden State. Instead of traveling, I will take you on a tour to those places and my travel videos will show you a lot of scenic sights and monuments absolutely free on my Youtube Channel.

Diamond Head Crater, Hawaii
A back-to-back footage showing the Diamond Head Crater in real life and its virtual reproduction in Second Life. Diamond Head refers to a volcanic tuff cone on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu and known to Hawaiians as Lēʻahi. Its English name was given by British sailors in the 19th century, who mistook calcite crystals embedded in the rock for diamonds. The re-creation of the dormant volcano in Second Life was sculpted by Avatrian under contractual agreement with Niamh Burnstein. It is one of distinguishing features of the University of Hawaii at Manoa simulator in SL. The crater was built to serve as a backdrop for an amphitheatre and is sized not to scale on purpose.

Diamond Head is a defining feature of the view known to residents and tourists of Waikīkī, and also a U.S. National Natural Monument. The volcanic tuff cone is a State Monument. While part of it is closed to the public and serves as a platform for antennas used by the U.S. government, the crater's proximity to Honolulu's resort hotels and beaches makes the rest of it a popular destination.
