The Dieng Plateau in Java Island, Indonesia, is THE place to visit if you're interested in active volcanic craters, beautiful multi-coloured lakes, ancient Hindu temples or just wanting to escape the heat of lowland Indonesia.
The word Dieng comes from Di Hyang, which means 'Abode of the Gods'. This marshy upland plateau (2000m above sea level) is fascinating to explore and features many fascinating attractions for travellers.
Dieng is famous for its active volcanic craters, which emit thick clouds steam and sulphurous fumes into the air. You must not miss the Sikidang Crater or the Sileri Crater as these two are awesome.
Dieng is also famous for its ancient hindu temples which originate form the Kalingga Kingdom and date back to the 7th century. The best place to see these is at the Arjuna Hindu Temple Complex where you can see several temples in one site , although there are a few more scattered around the area.
The multicoloured Telaga Warna or 'Coloured Lake' can present a variety of different colours including yellow, green, turquoise, blue and other colours, depending on the weather conditions and sulphur content. You can climb to viewpoints above the lake for extraordinary views and wonderful photographs.
Dieng Plateau is also famous for agriculture and a lot of potatoes, cabbages, eggplants and other vegetables are grown here.
Some native children, born in the Dieng Plateau region have a mysterious condition in which their hair naturally grows in a matted or tangled manner and the tangles cannot be removed with a comb. We didn't get to meet any such children unfortunately.
Locations in the video from the Dieng Plateau include: Telaga Warna (coloured lake), Arjuna Hindu Temple Complex, Sikidang Crater, Sileri Crater, Chandradimuka Crater, Nila Lake and Sumur Jalatunda (100m deep hole filled with water).

Next top, Dieng. Up high in the mountains of Central Java we enjoy the cooler weather for a few days camping by the oldest Hindu Temples in Indonesia (7th-8th century), watch some pigeon racing, catch the sunrise over 8 volcanoes (Gunung Merapi, the most active in Indonesia being one of them! ????????) and check out some colourful lakes.
Thanks to our adventurous GPS the drive down from Dieng was very scenic, taking us through produce and tobacco farms as we wind our way down the mountain towards Semarang.
Our stay in Semarang is short as this is where we catch the 18 hour ferry to Kalimantan. We bought our ferry ticket as soon as we arrived for our departure the following evening. The biggest and newest ferry we've been on yet and we even had our own sleeping quarters!
In the next episode we finish off our time in Indonesia before crossing by land into Malaysia!

Dieng plateau - Lost in Central Java
Dieng Plateau is a plateau on a volcanic complex near Wonosobo, Central Java, Indonesia. It sits at 2,000 meters above sea level, far from major population centres. The name Dieng comes from Di Hyang which means The place of the Gods. After the sunrise, we visited a sulfur lake, a temple and a lake in this quiet, natural and typical part of Central Java.

De Sikidang krater (Kawah Sikidang Crater Area) erg tof en ook een beetje angstaanjagend. Bij de randen staat een bord dat door de dampen helemaal vergaan is; wat het geheel een nog meer onheilspellende indruk geeft. Wij vonden het in ieder geval erg mooi om dit eens van zo dichtbij mee te maken.

Unbelievably freaking cold, everybody trying to find some spot around the open fire at the Jazz Festival Dieng Indonesia.Fingers were hurting, nose and ears frozen. ????Guess you noticed it already? It's sad but YouTube has world-wide shut down commenting below vlogs with minors. Unfortunately ours too. Hoping find a better solution soon!
