Great Blasket Island 'flying' boat
Flying over the waves of Dingle Bay on the way to Great Blasket Island on a Stormforce 11 'Peig Sayers' from Dingle, County Kerry.
The boat skipper is Billy O'Connor from the Great Blasket Island Experience based on Dingle, the company runs daily tours to Great Blasket Island and Eco Tours of the surrounding islands.
The day of the trip was pretty choppy out at sea and you can see this on the video as Billy skippered the boat across the waves. It is definitely the way to see Dingle Bay and Great Blasket Island - but hold on tight!
As we arrived at Great Blasket Island we saw a large Basking shark feeding next to the island.

Dingle - Fungie Boat Tour
Fungie Holiday | Things Do In Dingle
Fungie Holiday | Things Do In Dingle.
Dingle is the true home of the stuff, however, and there’s no better place to try it in the context of its weird and wonderful flavours. They include sea salt, lavender, brown bread, Dingle gin and Irish coffee. They also once made a smoked salmon ice cream, but they don’t like to talk about that.
The Dingle Peninsula, on Ireland’s southwest Atlantic coast, is ringed by sandy beaches and craggy cliffs. Inland are rolling hills and mountains, including 952m Mount Brandon. The region’s an officially recognised bastion of Irish language and culture. Dunmore Head, mainland Ireland’s easternmost point, has views of the Blasket Islands, famous for Irish-language memoirs documenting rural life in the 1800s and 1900s.
If you’re thinking of making the trip to the south-east to indulge in a little rural exploration, here are the sites and experiences on the gorgeous Dingle Peninsula that make it simply unmissable as part of any extended Irish itinerary.
Fungie
Let’s start with the obvious: meeting Dingle’s famous resident dolphin. Fungie has been around for years, with local legend holding that he lost his partner swimming in the Dingle Bay, and has (unusually for dolphins) lived here solo ever since. He’s a friendly creature, so much so that the company running the boat tours out to see him don’t charge you if he doesn’t show up. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can leap into the Atlantic on some trips, too.
