'Nation's T.Rex' Arrives At Smithsonian
The right femur of a T.rex is unveiled at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington.
The dinosaur roamed the Earth some 66 million years ago, but its remains arrived in Washington early Tuesday morning, following a cross-country road trip from Montana, via FedEx.
Formerly, it was on display at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR OF THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM KIRK JOHNSON SAYING:
We're unveiling what is called MOR 555 also known as the 'Wankel Rex', also known as the 'Nation's T.rex'. It was a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus Rex, discovered in 1988 on the shores of the Fort Peck Reservoir in eastern Montana, and it lay in the ground, much as it had died, on the shores of a stream in Montana, just over 66 million years ago. It's preservation was so good that it ranks as one of the top-5 skeletons of Tyrannosaurus Rexes ever discovered.
But the Smithsonian didn't originally discover the dinosaur.
Tom and Kathy Wankel did while on a fishing trip with their family in 1988 in eastern Montana -- hence the dinosaur's other name, the 'Wankel Rex'.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) KATHY WANKEL, STANDING WITH HER HUSBAND TOM WANKEL, WHO DISCOVERED T.REX 'MOR 555' TOGETHER IN 1988, SAYING:
We were just a farm couple with three little kids. We didn't think we had -- you know we weren't archaeologists, paleontologists, we didn't think we could get anyone to come and look. So we decided to take the bones out. And what it turned out to be, it was a little front arm bone and the shoulder blade of a T.rex, and we took it to the Museum of the Rockies, and they're the ones that came and excavated the whole thing.
The T.rex will be on display to the public in 2019 in an exhibit that will undergo the most extensive renovation of any exhibition in the museum's history.

The Friends of the Lake County Discovery Museum commissioned this fun animation to congratulate us on the museums' recent reaccreditation by the American Association of Museums. The Dryptosaurus from our Prehistoric Lake County video makes an appearance.
Dinosaur Discovery Augmented Reality Experience
To celebrate the blockbuster exhibition Dinosaur Discovery, the WA Museum has teamed up with the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, local technology start-up Hungry Sky, and animation specialists Eye Candy to unleash the dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period on people walking through the Perth Cultural Centre.
A big screen in the Perth Cultural Centre has been connected to a camera that films people as they walk through the space. On this screen 3D models of four dinosaurs - spinosaurus, australovenator, velociraptor, leaellynasaura - have been programmed to follow and interact with people, and make themselves known to be petted, photographed and played with.
This augmented reality experience will be running in the Perth Cultural Centre, just outside the Western Australian Museum - Perth throughout the duration of the exhibition (from 23 May until mid August 2014).

New dinosaur discovery: Lythronax argestes bug
Paleontologists unveiled a new species of tyrannosaur, Lythronax argestes, at the Natural History Museum of Utah. The 80-million-year-old sharp-toothed skeleton was unearthed in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The 24-foot-long dinosaur walked on two legs like the Tyrannosaurus rex in a swampy, subtropical coastal setting. It weighed some 2.5 tons and had a large head with a relatively narrow, short snout that widened at the back of the skull, giving its forward-facing eyes a great view for spotting prey. Read more at
