Downstream from Tower Bridge, Greenwich is the London base of the Royal Navy and holds England's largest expanses of preserved historic architecture and parks. And although lovers of things maritime will certainly gravitate to Greenwich, there's a lot more there than ships and boats. The highlight for most visitors is the Cutty Sark, the last surviving of the 19th-century clippers from the lucrative tea trade between Britain and China. Built in 1869, the Cutty Sark was one of the finest and fastest ships of its day, and you can board it to explore the clipper, from its figure head to the sailors' quarters below decks.
At the Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre exhibits show more than 500 years of maritime history. In Queen's House, the National Maritime Museumis the largest of its kind in the world, featuring the Royal Navy from Tudor times to the Napoleonic Wars. Greenwich Park, dating from the 15th century and the oldest of London's eight Royal Parks, is filled with beautiful gardens and walking paths, and here you'll find the Old Royal Observatoryand the Prime Meridian Line, marked by a steel rod in the floor of the Meridian Building. This is the zero meridian of longitude, dividing the world into eastern and western halves; you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere.

SUMMARY
=======
Greenwich ( (listen) GREN-itch, GRIN-ij, GRIN-itch, or GREN-ij) is an area of South East London, England, located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east-southeast of Charing Cross. It is located within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to which it lends its name.
Greenwich is notable for its maritime history and for giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time. The town became the site of a royal palace, the Palace of Placentia from the 15th century, and was the birthplace of many Tudors, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The palace fell into disrepair during the English Civil War and was rebuilt as the Royal Naval Hospital for Sailors by Sir Christopher Wren and his assistant Nicholas Hawksmoor. These buildings became the Royal Naval College in 1873, and they remained an establishment for military education until 1998 when they passed into the hands of the Greenwich Foundation. The historic rooms within these buildings remain open to the public; other buildings are used by University of Greenwich and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
The town became a popular resort in the 18th century and many grand houses were built there, such as Vanbrugh Castle (1717) established on Maze Hill, next to the park. From the Georgian period estates of houses were constructed above the town centre. The maritime connections of Greenwich were celebrated in the 20th century, with the siting of the Cutty Sark and Gipsy Moth IV next to the river front, and the National Maritime Museum in the former buildings of the Royal Hospital School in 1934. Greenwich formed part of Kent until 1889 when the County of London was created.

London Video Tour: Lambeth
In this video tour New York Habitat (nyhabitat.com) explores London’s thriving Lambeth neighborhood!
On the tour, David Hill will visit some of the most iconic and popular locations in London. Once a medieval Viking port, Lambeth is now internationally famous for its landmarks and history. Lambeth includes local area hotspots on the South Bank of the River Thames (opposite Westminster), including Waterloo, the Southbank Center, the London Aquarium, the London Eye, and Lambeth Palace. Further south you’ll see Clapham Common on the border of Wandsworth. Learn more about Lambeth on our blog:
Geographically speaking, Lambeth is three miles wide and seven miles long, though most people are only familiar with the northern edge. This video covers the area between Westminster Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge, as well as half of Clapham Commons. Are you looking for an apartment in the area? Consider our long-term rentals:
Waterloo Station
The busiest travel terminal in London, Waterloo Station hosts over 90 million people every year. The building was inaugurated in 1922 but the site has been a rail station since 1848. It’s also connected to the London Underground by three separate lines running beneath it.
Southbank Center
Known worldwide as world-class center of the arts, at 21 acres Southbank Center is Europe’s largest center for the arts. Some of the more notable concert halls include the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Haywood Gallery. It’s a great place to take the kids.
London Aquarium
Have you ever wanted to swim with sharks? How about feed them? At the London Aquarium you can! It’s the kind of activity kids can get excited about, and despite the way it sounds it’s perfectly safe – the sharks are small varieties. However, for those who don’t want to risk it there’s also turtle feeding.
London Eye
It’s the second-tallest viewing point in London and the largest Ferris Wheel in Europe. Drawing over 3.5 million visitors per year, it’s also the most popular tourist attraction in the entire UK. See for yourself in one of the 32 passenger capsules, and experience London in a truly unforgettable way. Or better yet, pop in for a visit with one of our nearby vacation rental apartments:
Lambeth Palace
Who has the oldest house in town? The Archbishop of Canterbury would give you a run for your money, as Lambeth Palace has been the traditional Archbishop’s seat since the last crusades of the 13th century. Take the kids to the nearby Archbishop’s park for a round of cricket or tennis, then hope on over to Westminster just across the river.
Clapham Common
For a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of Londontown, consider visiting Clapham Common. This 220 acre park is known for its lovely scenery and soothing atmosphere. It’s a great place to go for a midafternoon stroll or just to admire the quieter side of London.
We hope you enjoyed this tour of London’s Lambeth neighborhood. To see more, check out our blog at: nyhabitat.com and let us know which of these spots is your favorite!
Tate Modern is now UK’s top tourist attraction
The Tate Modern has overtaken the British Museum for the first time in a decade. The art gallery was visited by almost 5.9 million people last year.
Visitor numbers to the Tate Modern increased by 3.4 percent, while visits to the British Museum fell by 1.3 percent to just over 5.8 million.
The UK’s top 10 most-visited attractions are all in London and include National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Southbank Centre, V&A Kensington, Science Museum, Somerset House, Tower of London, and Royal Museums Greenwich.
Report by Gianluca Avagnina.

There are six airports serving London, all of which have train services into the city centre. The biggest by far are Gatwick to the south and Heathrow to the west.
The Heathrow Express is the fastest, the Heathrow Connect is slightly slower but much cheaper. Heathrow is on the end of the Piccadilly Line, so you can take the Tube, and the National Express is the slowest but cheapest.
The Gatwick Express is the fastest, Southern train service is slower but a bit cheaper, Thameslink runs services stopping at St.Pancras, Blackfriars, City Thameslink and Farringdon. Easy Coach, Terravision and National Express coaches are slower still but cheaper than the trains. A taxi journey from Gatwick will take around 90 minutes and cost between £70 and £100. A taxi from Heathrow to the centre will take about 45 minutes and the price can range from £45 to £70.
The London Underground is a vast network that can take you to all corners of the city. The key things to remember when using the Tube are: tapping in and out with a contactless bank card is the fastest and easiest way to pay; always always stand on the right; mobile apps are generally the best way to work out your route.
If you’d like to see more of the city while getting about, you can always hop on a bus instead. Just remember that you can’t use cash on the bus, so have your contactless card ready.
But to get around in the most truly authentic London way, it’s got to be a black cab. You can book one over the phone or hail one in the street. Taxi light on and the cab is available, light off and the taxi’s already carrying somebody.
There are loads of apps that can help you when you’re travelling around the city too:
First is Uber. The app allows you to call a cab to your location, specify your destination and pay through the phone. It makes getting around London simple and easy.
City mapper is an all-encompassing app that helps plan the most efficient route across London, offering comparisons between walking, Tube, taxi and buses. You can even request an Uber with Citymapper.
One last thing on transport… Not everyone has a contactless card and some foreign cards won’t work. Instead, you can get yourself an Oyster card. It’s London’s stored-credit transport smart card. Top it up and then tap in and tap out at the beginning and end of each Tube and bus journey.
Sightseeing tours are available by bus and boat. You can buy 24- and 48-hour bus tickets that allow you to hop on and hop off as much as you like. Some will also include a Thames Boat Tour.
Another good way to see the city is to get up high. Top tip, if you’re looking for a great view of the city go to the Skygarden at the top of the Walkie Talkie Tower because it’s free! All you have to do is book in advance.
Many of London’s biggest and best museums all have free entry. These museums are all free to enter although bear in mind that you’ll need to pay for entry to some of the seasonal exhibitions at the British Museum.
If you plan on visiting loads of attractions while you’re here, it might be worth considering a London Pass card. Although the cost of the card itself is quite expensive, it includes entry to loads of the top attractions like London Zoo, Windsor Castle; even the Tower of London.
If you want to see a Westend show during your London break, then we can help you find hotel and theatre tickets. You can check out our dedicated channel or go to our website for more information:
One last tip - check out Timeout. It’s a really great resource for showing you what’s on in London while you’re here.
There’s amazing food all over London and there’s nothing as British as Indian food, so come here to Brick Lane in East London for the best curry.
Head to Borough Market for the best street food. Rules Restaurant in Covent Garden is London’s oldest and our recommendation for traditional British food. For a traditional London pub, head to The Salisbury in Covent Garden.
For wine, we recommend give Gordon’s Wine Bar a try. You can’t book a table in the evening but you can reserve a lunchtime spot, so I really recommend it before it gets really busy.
Greenwich Reach 2000
Discover the potential as you 'Imagine Greenwich' as presented in this development proposal made by Greenwich Reach 2000. Enjoy a view of marketplaces as local artisans and shopkeepers describe the 'lively little place' of Greenwich. The area already attracts a lot of tourists due to historic sites, yet the lack of amenities and facilities prevents visitors from staying. The goal of Greenwich Reach 2000 is to create more in order to retain people for a longer period of time, and spend money locally. Specifically, plans are put into place to bring better access to the river, as local residents agree it is a neglected resource. Another major project is the construction of a unique cruise line terminal - where better than the center of the country's maritime history? With plans in place, developers believe Greenwich will expand and become the gateway to London.
This film is among the interesting collection of the Greenwich Heritage Centre. (The full catalogue record for this film, LSA/2865, is available at londonsscreenarchives.org.uk).

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
