How to Get the Deepest Inhale : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT THE DEEPEST INHALE: Ever feel like you're taken your deepest inhale, but it's not quite deep enough? The chances are you are missing a very simple part of the inhale flow which will completely transform your final inhale. Here I show you how. discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter.
For freedivers the final inhale is utterly crucial and, if, like so many other freedivers out there, you feel like you're missing a bit, it can become a cause of stress before your dive. Even if you think you're getting it right, this small change could be what you didn't even know you were looking for.
This technique to enhance your inhale is important for health as well as freediving - re-learning the correct inhale flow and all breathing techniques can transform our health, happiness, state of mind and overall well-being.

How To Stretch your Diaphragm: Uddiyanabhanda : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT DIAPHRAGM STRETCHING: Uddiyanabhanda relates to the diaphragm, as such it's the middle bhanda, between the root and the neck lock. In freediving, this little exercise can make or break depth progress. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at
Stretching uddiyanabhanda is one of the most important exercises you can do as a freediver, and it's never too early to start! This sweet little video walks you through how to 'turn yourself inside out' - getting your diaphragm nice and stretchy so that you can be relaxed, squashy and compressable to handle the pressure at depth.
The technique can be a bit tricky to get at the start, but with regular practice you will find that one day your belly magically disappears up inside your ribcage and you've got it!

Substrate89 - part two - freediving documentary
Three months prior to Nataliia Zharkova's freediving 89 meter CWT bifin world record, she entered into a series of smaller freediving competitions.
The documentary substrate89 houses one of these satellite competitions: 'The redccup' held in Dahab, Egypt.
Nataliia used the reccup as a means to pilot her training toward a peak performance yet to come at the CMAS world championships, held in Cas, Turkey - October 2018. In a sense, the redccup was part of the underlining layers to her success.
She entered into three of the depth disciplines - CWT, CNF, and FIM
Substrate89 runs through her journey: from the mental preparation, to warming-up, to a walkthrough of the dive to come, to a review; looking back in real-time of the thought process Nataliia ran through while below the surface.
Part two - is a walkthrough of Nataliia's constant weight dive to 93 meters.
Enjoy :)

SCUBA DIVING YOGA
#scubadiving #yoga #joga
Scuba diving once had a reputation as a daring sport that no tranquil yoga-type would likely find appealing. But like most stereotypes, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Yoga and scuba diving actually have a lot in common, and these activities build skills that complement each other, making you better at both.

How to do Sufi Grinding : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT SUFI GRINDING: The poor Sufis…. Haha! Don't worry, no-one was harmed in the making of this video! :-) Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at
Sufi grinding is my favourite yoga warm-up exercise and here I show you how to do it. It helps to soften and relax the whole of the spine, encourages deep, powerful breathing which cleanses the blood, and energises us, and the meditative focus that we use, combined with breath and movement also relaxes us mind, body and spirit. If that weren't enough, it also stimulates the kundalini energy deep in our belly to wake up.
I use this before every single yoga or meditation practice - quite simply it makes me feel great!

About Pranayama
ABOUT PRANAYAMA: Pranayama means to control, direct or manage our breath and life force energy. It is the discipline within yoga that focuses on breathwork so it probably the aspect of yoga that every freediver really spends time working on, whether they're aware of it or not!
Pranayama is the way that we not only increase our breathhold, improve our health, manage our mind and change our blood chemistry, but we also boost our vitality and even prolong our longevity. If you want to focus on one aspect of yoga, you can't go wrong with pranayama.

How to Engage Neck Lock : Jalandarabhanda : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT NECK LOCK: Jalandharabhanda, also called jalandabhand, or the neck lock, is essential in yoga and particularly in meditation. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at
It is also, for freedivers, known as the glottis - that tricky little bugger that you need to keep locked in order to keep your mouthfill
Neck lock is taught here in a super-easy and accessible way, to allow freedivers to really feel and understand what and where their glottis is, and how to get it to behave and do what they want it to.
This is the first step to many of the important breathing exercises (pranayama) in yoga, and to successful mouthfill for safe, deep freediving.

How To Engage Root Lock : Mulabhanda : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT THE ROOT LOCK: Mulabhanda, also known as mulbhand or the root lock, refers in western anatomy to the pelvic floor. This muscular lock which effectively closes off the lower end of the upper body, is essential in all parts of yoga, including meditation. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at
We use it to hold and direct energy during our practice. It is also essential in core strength and freedivers will benefit hugely from learning how to activate, and consciously relax, this deeper inner lock, not only for stability in the water, but also for flexibility of the diaphragm to maximise deep equalisation.
Practice mulabhanda anywhere and everywhere (it will also help you to not pee yourself when you get older! :-)

How to Sit for Meditation : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT SITTING: One of the greatest challenges to mediation is finding a comfortable sitting position. This short and simple video talks you through the options for all levels of flexibility. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at
The main focus for effective meditation is the position of your spine. As long as that is straight, it really doesn't matter so much what the rest of your body is doing. Here I take you through options for comfortable sitting so that you can begin a regular meditation practice to support you in your daily life.

How to do Spinal Flexes : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT SPINAL FLEX: Spinal Flex exercises help us to systematically warm-up and wake up the spine. Our spine performs so many amazing functions for us throughout our daily lives that it deserves and needs to be looked after and given a bit of love. This is the perfect way. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter
Along with the other warm-ups, these exercises loosen up the connective tissues to release tension and pain along your spine, open up the lower back which suffers compression and stiffness through our increasingly sedentary lives, encourage the cerebro-spinal fluid, which nourishes your brain and spinal cord (your central nervous system) to flow with ease, and open up the energetic pathway for the life force energy (your kundalini) to move. They also make you feel amazing!
All of that combined with the fact that in order to get great monofin technique your spine needs to be both flexible and strong means you'll be doing this exercise as part of your daily freedive training from this day on...

How to pack : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT PACKING: Packing is a useful tool in freediving training. Packing must be introduced and used with CAUTION and respect as it carries certain risks and adverse effects for the freediver. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at
Packing when used in dry stretching routines is very useful for increasing the lung capacity, enabling a freediver to inhale more deeply. It is used widely in pool competitive disciplines and by seriously deep freedivers (70/80m and more).
The risks are important to note; it increases the heart rate, which is counter to what the freediver needs in performance, can cause packing black-outs as it can restrict the flow of oxygen to the brain (if practiced dry this is only dangerous in that you may fall and hurt yourself - practice on a bed!), and there have been a few cases of lung over-expansion and even bubbles entering the bloodstream.
If using packing, start and progress slowly, never going into any kind of discomfort, and keep it appropriate to your level of performance.

How to chant the Adi Mantra Ong Namo : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT ONG NAMO: We begin every practice of Kundalini Yoga with the Adi Mantra: Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo'. This mantra is the foundation for my four World Records in freediving. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter.
I explain more about this magical mantra in my RELAXATION programme, but learning to chant it, and enjoying the vibrations it sends through your body is enough in itself. It will calm you, balance your nervous system and endocrine (hormonal) system.

How to Reverse Pack : Yoga for Freediving with Sara Campbell
ABOUT REVERSE PACKING: Reverse packing, as the name suggests, is the opposite of packing - and is essential for safe, deep diving. Join me at discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at
Many people, particularly early on in their training, focus on packing in order to expand their lung volume. However, for anyone wanting to dive deep, reverse packing is the one you want - and need - to focus on.
Reverse packing is the method through which we stretch our residual capacity, i.e. we are able to exhale further and deeper, decreasing the volume of our lungs. This is essential for safe, deep diving.
This simple video walks and talks you through what - and what not - to do! Enjoy!

About Meditation
ABOUT MEDITATION: It seems everyone is meditating - or at least talking about meditating - these days. But for many it remains a mystical, mysterious and sometimes daunting practice. Here I unpack meditation and explain why it is not only a very funky and necessary tool for freedivers, but also pretty much the one thing that can help us live our daily lives more effectively, happily, with more focus, energy and commitment. Far from it being something for mystics or women in LuluLemon yoga pants, if you want to get on in life, meditation is pretty much the quickest way to get where you want to be going!
