Henna Gaijin | Ep 15 | East Timor musician Etson Caminha
While in TImor-Leste recently, Henna Gaijin met Etson Caminha – a Timorese musician, artist and tattooist who started off making music with trash as a young boy in Los Palos. This short film tells the story about how he arrived in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste and what inspires his music.

Camping in the Dust - East Timor
October 2006
During the recent riots in East Timor, 150,000 refugees fled to displacement camps. Five months on, they still can't return home. With the rainy season weeks away, the situation is getting desperate.
We've got no beds or anything. We had to leave everything behind, laments John Boscoe. Like most of the refugees here, he's an Easterner and risks being attacked by mobs from the west if he goes home. Even before the riots, life for most people was a struggle. One in ten children die before their first birthday. It's disconcerting to find so many under-nourished children, comments one doctor. When the rainy season starts soon, more are expected to die. Little wonder people feel disillusioned with their leaders. They are not capable of running the country. What was independence for?

East Timor, One day motorbike trip to Balibo
Dili-Liquica-Mubara-Batugade-Balibo
A great weekend adventure in East Timor - motorbike trip from Dili to the Balibo memorial where 5 Australian journalists were killed in 1975 by the Indonesian army.
Cozy villages, spectacular views, friendly locals. The road condition is actually not so bad.

TIMOR-LESTE PT.3 (JACO ISLAND) - The Way Overland - Episode 14
This week we do a lap of Timor-Leste, driving to the south coast, then back up north to a town called Baucau. From here we drive to the most eastern point of Timor to Tutuala Beach.
Our original plan was to drive here and then get the boat to Jaco Island, which lies just a few hundred metres off the coast, though the local fishermen who take you here were charging an arm and a leg to take you on the 3 minute boat ride so we decided to enjoy the beach which was right at our new doorstep. It did not disappoint! The water was crystal clear with a coral garden full of life. The snorkelling is very easy here as the water didn’t go much deeper than 8m. Although it was a long trek to get here, it was certainly worth it.
Unfortunately we ran out of food and it was time to start heading towards Indonesia. So we were on the road and heading to the Indonesian border. On our way to the border we made a last minute decision to go to Balibo, a village in Timor-Leste which is infamously known for by Balibo 5. A group of 5 journalists working for Australian TV networks were murdered in Balibo by Indonesian soldiers while covering the impending Indonesian invasion of Timor Leste. Being journalists, they believed that they wouldn’t be considered targets and decided to paint the Australian Flag and the word Australia on the wall of the community centre to send a message to the Indonesians of who was there, though unfortunately this was to no avail. While the murder of the 5 journalists was a tragedy in itself, it is speculated that between anywhere from 90,000 to over and 200,000 East Timorese were killed during the 24 year Indonesian occupation.
The last minute decision to go to Balibo turned out to be a good one. Mark came down with a flu so we spent a couple of days there while he rested, and Jolie went out to a primary school in the mountains with a lovely Australian lady, Michelle, who has been volunteering at the Balibo Community Centre for the past 2 years. It was great hearing Michele’s stories and most of all seeing how excited the kids were about the little things that we take for granted, like an exercise book and pencils.
Next week we drive into Indonesia, spend a couple of days in Kupang whilst we wait for the ferry to Flores. Then in Flores we visit Mt Kelimuntu and see the tri-coloured lakes.
If you have any suggestions on places we must see in Indonesia we’d love to hear from you!

FREE DIVING ATAURO ISLAND (Timor-Leste Pt.1) - The Way Overland - Episode 12
A big shout out to our FIRST Patreon, Simon! We're glad to have you on board!
If you like our videos and would like to contribute check out our Patreon page. Any contribution goes a long way!
So, the shipping has been delayed! Which means we have some time to kill while we wait for it to arrive in Dili.
We decide to jump on the slow ferry to Atauro Island, which takes you to the eastern side of the island to Beloi. From there we hike 8.7km over to the western side to Adara, where we’ll stay at Mario’s Place for the week.
We spend the week here with some new friends, exploring the amazing reef just metres in front of where we slept. The reef here has recently been changed to a protected zone following the Adara community bringing awareness to the damages of local fishing practices. This means that here you’ll find an abundance of fish and healthy coral. As part of this project divers are charge US $1.50 per day, which is then put towards local projects such as the school.
Mark also spends a full day hiking Atauro’s highest peak, Mt. Manukoko at 999m high. All up the 25km walk from Mario’s Place is a very challenging day though is equally as rewarding.
Our week on an island with no cares in the world has come to an end, and we’ll hopefully pick our car up on Monday morning when we’re back in Dili. Then, the real adventure begins!
Hope you guys are enjoying the videos! If you have any suggestions of what you’d like to see I’d love to hear from you!

TIMOR-LESTE PT.2 (MT. RAMELAU) - The Way Overland - Episode 13
After what felt like months, our car has finally arrived from Australia! With the car being buried under a pile of other containers, we had to push the guys at the port along a bit to get it out that day. It was such a relief opening the doors and seeing our car/home there in one piece!
We made a last minute decision before we left Australia to get some fly screens made up for the rear doors, as the ones that Jolie had attempted to make were absolute rubbish. They arrived in the post the day after we flew out, so a courier dropped them to the shipping agent to get them in the container with the car. The morning after we get the car back Mark installs them, taking only 20 minutes. So far they seem like a really well made product, so we’ll test them out over the next week or so and give you a run down on how they go! If you’re looking for fly screens for your car, Doug from “Top Gear 2 Go” is your man. He was quick to get them made up and posted out to us and makes products for lots of different cars.
Check our his website
With the new fly screen installed, we couldn’t get out of Dili fast enough. First stop is Mt Ramelau, Timor-Leste’s highest peak at 2986m. The 85km drive to Hato Builico, the town where you begin the climb, took us a good 2 1/2 hours as the roads are in terrible shape. The reasonably dramatic climb out of Dili not only offers some pretty special views it also gives a welcome relief to the very humid coastal weather. When we reached Hatu Builico, we continued driving up a steel and loose rock 4wd track up to the campground a bit further up the mountain.
We set our alarms to 3am and made the hike up to the summit to watch the sunrise. We couldn’t of picked a more perfect morning to come up here as it was so clear. At the summit it was absolutely freezing. The temperature was only about 5 degrees, though the wind went straight to your bones! For the rest of the day Jolie had a bright red face from wind burn. Nevertheless, being here for sunrise is an amazing experience as the views are magical.
Hope you enjoyed the video! Next week we’re doing a lap of the south coast of Timor-Leste then driving north again to Baucau where we’ll pick up our friend that we met on Atauro Island, then drive to the most eastern point of the island, Tutuala Beach, which has a lovely coral garden and some of the clearest water I’ve seen.

Skateboarders Of Timor - Leste
Our friend Brett Nichols, recently journeyed to Timor - Leste to do some good, and spread the love of skateboarding to parts of the world with little to no exposure to the lifestyle. he was hosted by the non profit association Bafuturu which is doing its best to steer the youth of Timor away from violence and fighting towards more positive outlets for their energy like skateboarding. A bunch of shops and fellow skaters pulled together to gather shoes, decks and skate gear for the kids of Timor. This was over a month ago, and by now i'm sure most of the equipments been burned through as the kids are catching the spark and progressing fast. If you'd like to help out, please get in contact with Ba Futuru Peace Center about donating to help further a great cause here skatebafuturu@gmail.com If you're local, Metro's gonna be gathering up another shipment of skate goods for these kids, if you have any donations to help keep these young kids on skateboards new or used, drop em by the shop during the month of October, or please help us spread the word about this cause by favoriting, reposting and passing along this video. You can make a difference, and it'll do a world of good in a young kids life :D Thanks!

We have a few days to relax which mean that we get to see the sights of Darwin. Coming to the end of the dry season, the city has certainly quietened down though we got here just in time to visit the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets before they close up for the wet season.
From here on things get real as we start the first international part of the trip! First stop, Dili, Timor-Leste!
Hope you guys are enjoying the videos! If you have any suggestions of what you’d like to see I’d love to hear from you!
