Hawaii’s Big Island – The “Big Island” of Hawaii is (you guessed it) the largest of the Hawaiian Islands and offers a stunning array of beautiful scenery for you to explore. Check out the best sights and activities on the island, here!
When ready, browse vacation packages to Hawaii’s Big Island:
A #Hawaii #vacation means days filled with natural wonders: wander around a lava field, stroll through a tropical rainforest, and take a dip in the warm waters of the Pacific.
The Onomea Bay Scenic Drive, located along the Hamakua Coast, will take you past shimmering emerald rainforest and astonishing glimpses of the tranquil Pacific Ocean. It’s the perfect place to get some pictures and see what the beauty of Hawaii is really about.
No #tour of Hawaii’s Big Island is complete without meeting the sea turtles of Kahalu’u Bay. Strap on your snorkel and swim around the warm, blue-green waters of the bay to meet turtles and thousands of other sea creatures.
Try out paddleboarding, jet skiing, or a variety of other watersports. Alternatively, spoil yourself in the time-honored indulgence of relaxing on the black lava sands, soaking up some of the legendary Hawaiian sunshine.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Spectacular Snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii (4k)
This video shows the incredible diversity and beauty of marine life on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It shows what you can expect when snorkeling in locations like Kealakekua Bay (Captain Cook) and Honaunau Bay (2-step). About 60 species of fish and other marine animals are identified by name in this video. Enjoy!
Kawaihae Harbor, Island of Hawaii
Kawaihae Harbor is on the Kohala Coast north of the Waikaloa Resorts on the Island of Hawaii. It is the home of Kawaihae Canoe Club.
Kawaihae Harbor includes a fuel depot, shipping terminal and military landing site. Outside of the man-made breakwall of the harbor is a popular surf spot and the Pua Kailima o Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park.
The small town features a handful of restaurants and art galleries. To the north of the harbor is the Kawaihae Canoe Club and a small boat ramp. To the south is Puʻukoholā Heiau national historic site, built by King Kamehameha I in 1791. Also to the south is the smaller Mailekini Heiau and the Hale o Kapuni Heiau, which is submerged.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers dredged the harbor and built the breakwall between 1957 and 1959. In 1970, construction of a small boat harbor began to the south of the main harbor entrance by several institutions under the name of Project Tugboat. Over 100 tons of conventional explosives were buried in the Kawaihae reef and detonated to clear the basin and the entrance.
It also served as the launching point for the film Waterworld with Kevin Costner. The artificial reef or floating island was just off the coast with headquarters for the movie at the harbor.

Waialea Bay Kohala Kona Hawaii (69's)
An aerial view of Waialea Bay on the Kohala coast of the Big Island. Or to the locals, the Kona side of Hawaii Island. This beach is a part of the Hapuna State Recreational area; also known as 69's. It was a great place to enjoy the calm Kona waters and even have some shade. It is a great beach for the kids and family. Bring your snorkel gear. There is a small reef to spot some underwater life. Parking is $5 for non- Hawaii residents.
A note of caution: This beach has been known to be dangerous when a big swell arrives (several times a year). Exercise caution. Look around and ask the locals if it safe. When in doubt, don't go out. #StrangeHawaii

Hawaiian Reef Fishes
The tidepools along the Ka Iwi Shoreline hold many surprises. As beautiful as they are, the thing Jamie and I worried about the most was...What if the tide comes in and we get stuck out here? Luckily, it worked out fine, and with a little rock climbing, we made it up to the main trail to the lighthouse. I recorded some amazing creatures in their natural habitats. Enjoy!
