Dixville Notch of New Hampshire guards midnight voting tradition in 2016 US Presidential Election
The tiny, unincorporated town of Dixville Notch in the U.S. state of New Hampshire, is readying itself once again for its quadrennial moment of fame as the U.S. Election Day is drawing near.
Midnight voting in the first-in-the-nation presidential elections is expected to take place in Dixville Notch on Tuesday, despite major renovations underway at the now-crumbling Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, the traditional balloting place, which was closed in 2011.

Over time, the rushing waters of the Flume Brook exposed this large outcropping of rock. Table Rock is a section of Conway granite that is 500 feet (150m) long and 75 feet (20m) wide. Caution: The rocks are slippery - please stay on the trail.

NH History Coös County Originally part of Grafton County, Coös was the first county created after US Independence in 1803. The population at that time was only 3,000 people Coös is an Abenaki term for “dwellers in the pine tree place”or “small pines” Coös has 20% of NH’s land area but only 2.3% of its population at 33,055 at the 2010 census. To compare, Derry, NH’s fourth largest town had 33,255 at the 2010 census In the 19th Century logging, pulp and paper were some of the main industries especially in Berlin, which was home to the Brown Paper Company, which actually invented the modern tape measure in 1922. By the early 1900’s tourism was a booming industry, with grand hotels opening such as The Balsam’s in Dixville Notch, home of the first in the nation vote. The Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, home of the Bretton Woods Conference we talked about in a previous episode. Mountain View Grand in Whitefield which has a great view of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains. Tourism is the biggest industry to this day Coös County is one of the most consistent bellwether counties in the nation, having supported the president-elect in every election since 1892 besides 1968 and 2004. Makes up the vast majority of NH’s unincorporated places which are townships that have no government and are usually unpopulated year round. (23, rest of NH 2) No, you can’t get away with murder there. The County runs the place with either neighboring towns or state police providing the police force. Day to day stuff like trash collection plowing etc homeowners pay to the nearest town voluntarily. There’s no property tax in unincorporated places Before you think about buying property, though, some of the unincorporated places are in the White Mountain National Forest which is unfortunately owned by the Feds, or in State owned parks. Which means building a home isn’t allowed in those places.

Dixville Notch- Proof That On Nov. 3 2008 Obama Won Presidency
UPDATE, November 3, 2008, 9:10 p.m.: Obama won! So this First-In-The-Nation election was right!
Listen to the cheers in the room as Obama is announced the winner, a preview to Grant Park where over 200,000 people showed up to cheer and listen to Obama's acceptance speech. Make sure to see my videos of that event.
Note the time I posted this, November 3 on the west coast.
So the physical voting and counting where Obama would win the Presidency took place at 9:00 P.M. November 3, not November 4. Surreal. That's the way of the Net and YouTube.
===============
IMHO this is the most fantastic video on YouTube. [OK, that's a bit much.] But I can't stop watching it. It is so cool.
David Shuster on MSNBC's Hardball announces the play by play of voting in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. Emily Heil of Roll Call, Heard on the Hill also provides insightful commentary.
In what has been since 1960 a traditional win for Republicans in this small resort town, in 2008 Obama wins over McCain!
Dixville Notch is FIRST in the nation of live voting where people cast their ballots at midnight November 4 and election officials count the votes minutes later.
Precursor of things to come? As Sarah Palin might say, you betcha.
McCain 6 votes, Ralph Nader 0, Barack Obama 15.
Sidenote: Here is how The Balsams Resort describes the voting process:
In 1952, New Hampshire first provided its residents with the opportunity to vote in Presidential primaries. In these early elections, many small towns around the state competed to get their votes in first. But ever since Dixville Notch was granted the privilege of being a voting community in 1960, it has continuously maintained the honor of being First in the Nation to report its results of the Presidential election.
In order to maintain this honorary status, every single registered voter in Dixville Notch must turn out and vote. Just before midnight the day before the election, these voters come to The BALSAMS and take a head count to ensure everyone is present. When the polls officially open at the strike of midnight, each voter heads to a booth in the Ballot Room and casts his or her vote. The entire process takes about a minute.
Take a look at The Balsams' website. Looks like a nice place to stay. Too bad I don't make it to the east coast too often. :(

Space Monkey Ride 2009
My friend Alex and I went on a 3 day, 788.5 mile motorcycle ride April 17, 18 and 19th. The 17th we headed south from Albuquerque to Socorro then east through the Valley of Fire, Carrizozo and to Alamogordo for the night. The next day we visited The Museum of Space History and the grave of Ham the Astrochimp, White Sands National Monument, City of Rocks State Park and on into Glenwood in the Gila wilderness for the night. My friend Jeff and his pup Little Man joined us for the remainder of our journey to hike the Catwalk and a ride up a hellish road to the ghost town Mogollon. We then headed back towards Albuquerque while making many stops along the way including the VLA (Very large Array) which is an array of radio telescopes that span 13 miles in the shape of a Y. Here they listen to the sounds of space. It was an incredible trip.

Tuckerman Ravine, Southeast Face of Mt Washington, White Mountains, New Hampshire
Tuckerman Ravine is one of New Hampshire's unique natural resources. My wife Catherine, friend Dundee, and I did an uphill 2.4 mile snow and ice packed hike to the base of Tuckerman. This short video shares highlights from our 4 hour hike via the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.
Our trek starts with the 2.5 hour hike from the Appalachian Mountain Club's Pinkham Notch Hut up to the Hermit Hut Shelter, and includes our 1.5 hour downhill hike return to our car.
Tuckerman Ravine is a vast open bowl perched on the southeast slope of Mount Washington, the highest mountain in the Northeast at 6,288 feet. In the spring snow depths can reach 100 feet in the Ravine.
Needless to say, Tuckhterman Ravine is a very dangerous area. It also is very exciting and challenging for skiers and outdoor enthusiasts. The open porch of the Hermit Hut shelter is a great place to watch the skiers.
How do I get to Tuckerman Ravine?
Tuckerman Ravine can only be reached by hiking uphill - there is no ski lift, road, or method of access - other than to hike. You start your hike (many wear their ski equipment on the hike) at Pinkham Notch to the Hermit Hut Shelter (tp://tiimefortuckeran.com/tuckermanravinemap.html). Then you hike straight up the headwall of the Ravine, so you can extreme alpine, snowboard, and telemark ski. This video shows skiers on the Hillmans Highway, Left Gully, and Bowl.
Once reaching the Hermit Hut Shelter, extreme alpine, snowboard, and telemark skiers continue to climb another hour or so up to the headwall of the Ravine's various self-made ski lanes. This video shows skiers on the Hillmans Highway, Left Gully, and Bowl
A Training Hike for Us
Later this summer Dundee and I with five friends plan a 10 hour hike to the peak of Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak at 5,269 feet, and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. ( We are using this Tuckerman Ravine hike to begin building our physical endurance, and at the same time enjoy this marvelous extreme ski ritual of spring in New Hampshire.
