The tales of those that haunt the Dock St Theater - on the site of America's first theater - is much different from the serial killer, soldier and witch-type ghosts usually heard.
It was originally constructed around 1809 as Planter's Hotel by the Calder
It's said that there are two entities that continuously wander around the theater. One of them was a famous actor by the name of Junius Brutus Booth, most famously known as the father of the man who killed President Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth.
The other ghostly creature, a nameless prostitute locals call Nettie who is believed to have frequented the area also in the 1800's.
Nettie worked at the hotel and was struck by lightening standing on her porch.
She was killed instantly.
The theater recently underwent a three-year, $18 million renovation.

Powered by - Charleston is famous for its unique culture, which blends traditional Southern U.S., English, French, and West African elements. The downtown peninsula is well known for its art, music, local cuisine, and fashion. Spoleto Festival USA, held annually in late spring, is one of the world's major performing arts festivals. It was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, who sought to establish a counterpart to the Festival dei Due Mondi (the Festival of Two Worlds) in Spoleto, Italy. Charleston's oldest community theater group, the Footlight Players, has provided theatrical productions since 1931. A variety of performing arts venues includes the historic Dock Street Theatre. The annual Charleston Fashion Week held each Spring in Marion Square brings in designers, journalists, and clients from across the nation. Charleston is known for its local seafood, which plays a key role in the city's renowned cuisine, comprising staple dishes such as gumbo, she-crab soup, fried oysters, lowcountry boil, deviled crab cakes, red rice, and shrimp and grits. The culture in Charleston differs greatly even from the rest of South Carolina, with British and French elements heavily prevalent.

Blue Dogs 6th Annual Homecoming & 30th Anniversary Celebration
Dog People:
This year we are celebrating our 30th Anniversary playing music together, and in that time, we have played more events for pediatric cancer than any other charity work. So, when we created our own annual event in 2013, we saw it as our chance to bring folks together to join in the fight to end pediatric cancer by raising funds for cutting-edge research—while also putting on a great night of music.
In 2016 & 2017 alone, we raised over $300,000, thanks to an amazing group of generous charity-minded sponsors and loyal music fans—along with The Press On Fund out of Augusta, GA, which provided us with a match for every dollar we raised.
With their mission to cure childhood cancer within our lifetime, The Press On Fund will continue to work along side of us and our sponsors to support the work of MUSC Associate Professor of Pediatrics Jacqueline M. Kraveka in the division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. Dr. Kraveka runs the ONLY pediatric oncology research lab in the state of South Carolina.
Ultimately, The Blue Dogs get to do what we do best: play music and celebrate! Over the five years so far, we have been fortunate to have as special guests many of our musical colleagues and heroes including Darius Rucker, Hootie and the Blowfish, Edwin McCain, Radney Foster, Drivin n Cryin, The Connells, Pat McGee, Uncle Mingo, Jupiter Coyote, The Killer Whales, and many more local and regional musicians we know and love. Each year there are unique collaborations and always a couple of last-minute surprises. Our special guests this year will be announced on Labor Day weekend.
In 2018, we are aiming to take our event’s impact to another level. Please make note of the PRESALE AND ONSALE dates coming up, and you might also consider sponsoring with your business! With the growing visibility and success of our event, we are seeing greater interest each year. As soon as possible, we hope you will consider becoming a part of our team!
Sponsorship packages include VIP tickets, which not only get you the best seats in the house but also include admission to the pre-show reception held from 5:30-7pm before the show. For sponsorships, contact Mimi Dorman at MUSC by email dormanm@musc.edu or by phone at 843-792-0350.
Have a great rest of the summer, and we’ll see you soon.
