The Fridericianum is one of the main exhibition venues of Documenta. This time it’s the place where for the first time the collection of Greece’s National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) is presented in Germany. On display are works by the artists Alexis Akrithakis, Nikos Alexiou, Dimitris Alithinos, Stephen Antonakos, Janine Antoni, Eugenia Apostolou, Athanasios Argianas, Manolis Baboussis, Bertille Bak, Lynda Benglis, Chronis Botsoglou, and many others.

The exhibition at the Fridericianum marks the first time the collection of Greece’s National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) is presented in Germany, through a double displacement that renders EMST’s home, the renovated building of the former Fix brewery in Athens, one of the main venues of documenta 14, and the Fridericianum, traditionally the centerpiece of a documenta exhibition, the temporary home of EMST’s collection. With this collaboration, documenta 14 and EMST strengthen each other’s public engagement, captured in documenta 14’s working title Learning from Athens as well as in the museum’s new annual exhibition series, entitled “EMST in the World.”
EMST began creating its collection in 2000. Its holdings now include more than 1,100 works by Greek and international artists from the 1960s onward. The exhibition at the Fridericianum is an adapted version of the museological study of the EMST collection by the director Katerina Koskina to be inaugurated in Athens in 2017, with the curatorial assistance of Tina Pandi and Stamatis Schizakis, the architectural design of Iro Nikolakea, and the support of all the EMST staff. The artworks that travel to Kassel comment on the complex reality in Greece today and highlight the parallel and international journeys of pioneering Greek artists.
In their transcultural decussation, documenta 14 and EMST engage border crossings, diasporas, and personal and collective memories—including issues of repatriation, or αντιδάνεια (the return of loans)—in a manifestation of the two institutions’ joint commitment to preserving and reinterpreting cultural icons and important artworks. The presentation considers the EMST collection vis-à-vis the history of the Fridericianum, the birthplace of documenta and the first public museum on mainland Europe, offering new histories while challenging prevalent ones. The Fridericianum’s brief tenure as a house of parliament serves as an important connection to the ways some artists represented in the EMST collection have dealt with the difficulty of sustaining democracy during the postwar transformation of Greek and European society, including the years of military dictatorship.
During documenta 14, the Fridericianum’s rotunda hosts the Parliament of Bodies, the exhibition’s Public Programs, ramifying the site’s short term as a house of parliament in the early nineteenth century as it operates as a critical device, queering the ruins of democratic institutions as well as the traditional forms of educational and public programming. In addition, in the basement of the Fridericianum, Ben Russell’s new film project Good Luck (2017) examines the social and global scale of the politics of mineral extraction. It is a study about the communities of workers in an illegal, small-scale gold mine in Suriname and in a state-owned copper mine in Serbia.

documenta 14’s exhibit in Athens has opened its doors for its fourteenth season. Germany’s renowned modern art exhibition is running in two cities for the first time in its history: Athens and Kassel.
Learning from Athens is the tagline given by artistic director Adam Szymczyk to documenta 14. The modern art exhibition is one of the largest in the world and has been held in Kassel, Germany, since 1955. But this year, the exhibit is split between two cities in two different countries: it’s a controversial move.
Athens is currently struggling with economic problems and is also on the frontline of the refugee crisis. While curators and artists hope it will reinvigorate the Greek capital’s art scene, the plan’s detractors complain that it smacks of cultural imperialism.
One of the critics, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, called it ‘a gimmick’ to exploit the tragedy in Greece. Will the troubled city end up little more than a striking backdrop for the international art élite? What can wealthy northern Europe really learn from a city that’s struggling to stay afloat?
What happens when the event is over? And what purpose does art serve in times of crisis? A look behind the scenes of documenta 14, which kicks off in the Greek capital on April 8 and moves on to Kassel in June.

In this video, we have a closer look at Marta Minujín's installation “The Parthenon of Books”, one of the highlights of Documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany.

The Parthenon was built in Athens at the instigation of Pericles, under the supervision of the sculptor Phidias, between 447 and 38 BCE. The structure is ten meters high by seventy meters long and thirty meters wide. The temple was conceived to house a colossal gold statue of Athena, as well as the Delian League’s treasury and the city’s silver reserves—in the event of a Persian attack, these precious metals could be melted down and made into new coins to finance war. Transformed into a Christian church in the Middle Ages, then into a mosque during the Renaissance, the deconsecrated Parthenon of the modern period became a symbol of democracy and of Western cultural supremacy.
Marta Minujín, born in Buenos Aires in 1943, seized this aesthetic and political archetype of democracy for her own situation: corrupted by a “national Catholic” dictatorship that reigned in Argentina up until 1983, she put the democratic ideal back into circulation at the moment when the military junta fell. Her artistic project was part of her series “La caída de los mitos universals” or “The Fall of Universal Myths,” which appropriated monumental icons to replicate them, break them up into pieces, and redistribute them into the public realm. In a certain way, the artist gives back to these symbols—reified and confiscated by institutionalization or capitalization—their status as offerings. For El Partenón de libros (The Parthenon of Books, 1983), 25,000 books, taken from cellars where they had been locked up by the military, covered a scale replica of the Greek edifice; built out of metal tubes and elevated to one side, this Parthenon was placed in a public square in the southern part of Buenos Aires.
Minujín’s monuments to democracy and to education through art revive the ceremonies of archaic societies—contrary to the banning of books by the junta’s army and different from the privatization of public property that, through speculating on the debt of the state, encourages the suppression of public-sector services and creates social shortages. In her mass-participation projects, Minujín rediscovers the initial value of a collective treasure; she melts shared capital back down into cultural currency without remainder. She lays down the verticality of public edifices that embody confiscated cultural knowledge and a hidebound heritage. She dilapidates the fortune these myths represent. By literally tilting these symbols, Minujín not only gives new meaning to these monuments, she offers them a new sensuality.

Contemporary art in the dock at Documenta
The sleepy German city of Kassel is currently experiencing an
invasion of a distinctly artistic kind. Once every five years,
thousands of artists, art critics, curious tourists and media
representatives besiege Kassel to experience the delights of
Documenta; a comprehensive overview of international contemporary
art. The theme governing this year's Documenta - the tenth of its kind - is retroperspective, according to the exhibition's French curator, Catherine David. The exhibition is also designed to focus on modern urban existence; this is reinforced by the geographical planning of Documenta, which begins at the station and continues through the underground along an axis running through the centre of Kassel to the Museum Fridericianum and onto different parts of the town and its past.

Germany hosts a jumbo-sized round-up of contemporary art
The north German city of Kassel is currently holding Documenta, a contemporary art festival held once every five years. The artwork on display literally takes over the city, starting with installations at Kassel railway and continuing through the underground along an axis running through the centre of Kassel to the Museum Fridericianum and onto different parts of the town.

Inaugural exhibition of EMST, 2000, Athens, Greece, “Synopsis 1-Communications”;
Given that in the year 2000, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens was proclaimed and destined to be situated within the run-down building of the former brewery FIX, and although a small area inside has been somewhat organized and offered to serve as exhibition space, I felt that the situation should not be overlooked.
In this light, of a Museum in flux, a Museum in Genesis, where opposite forces of chaos and order were apparent, and with the conceptual tool of the ideogram of Chess Continuum(1992), where opposites are complementary in a constant flow, I decided to tear down the wall, abandoning the space which served as Museum, and enter the run-down space of the FIX building.
Bridging in this way “chaos” and “order”, not only architecturally but also image-wise, in the similarity of white noise (which is a chaotic phenomenon of the technology itself) to the sea sparkling in the sun.
