Shark fishing in Marathon Florida Keys with SeaSquared Charters 5/21/11 (part 2)
Catch-and-release shark fishing in the Florida Keys is an extraordinary experience for anglers of all ages and abilities.
SeaSquared Charters shark fishes in waters less than ten feet deep in calm Florida Keys Gulf areas. Because these calmer waters are away from the motion of the deeper ocean waters, shallow water angling for sharks is well suited for anyone prone to seasickness. The fishing, however, is anything but calm.
We primarily target lemon, blacktip and bull sharks, typically ranging in length from three to eight feet. On occasion, however, we encounter tiger and hammerhead sharks which can attain lengths of fifteen feet and more! Regardless of size, all are capable of providing you quite a memorable thrill.

Hurricane Monument Memorial Islamorada Florida Keys HD
I enjoy learning history and I knew about The Great Hurricane of 1935. But I wasn't aware of the Hurricane Memorial and it's story until I happen to drive by it. I'm glad I decided to stop and take a look. Sorry the video is a little shaky, I was holding onto my dog while filming.
Millions of vehicles have conceivably passed through Islamorada and overlooked the 1935 Hurricane Memorial. It is innocent enough in appearance, yet eloquent and highly significant in legacy as a memorial. For those who might wish to visit the site, it is located between the old State Road 4A highway and the present U.S. 1 at mile marker 81.5, across from the library. It was dedicated November 14, 1937 as The Florida Keys Memorial and memorializes the World War-I veterans and civilians who perished in the 1935 hurricane. The U.S. Department of Interior placed it on the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1995.
For the memorial, the center was dug down to bedrock and a base was made of stone and concrete 65 by 20 feet. From the base five broad steps lead to an elevated flooring area. It is covered with coral slabs known as keystone quarried from either the Windley Key or Key Largo Quarry. The original structure stopped at the lower step. Later, the original crushed coral rock area between the flagpole and the steps was paved with artificial keystone material. A concrete sidewalk was also added and decorative vegetation added.
There is a crypt made into the upper level that contains the skeletal bones and cremated remains of many of the veterans and citizens who perished, some after the 1935 hurricane. A 22-foot long ceramic tile map by ceramicist Adela Gisbet of the Keys from Key Largo to Marathon is inlaid into the cover of the crypt.
The native rock-covered obelisk of the memorial rises 18 feet skyward above the dais with a relief sculptured tidal wave and palms bending under the force of the terrific winds. The glyphic Mayan style design was by Harold Lawson and developed by Lambert Bemlemans. Other WPA artists involved were William Shaw, Allie Mae Kitchens, Emigdio Reyes and Harold Lawson.
Below the sculpture is a bronze plaque by artist John Klinkenberg inscribed: Dedicated To The Memory Of The Civilians And The War Veterans Whose Lives Were Lost In The Hurricane Of September Second 1935. Nine-year-old hurricane survivor Faye Marie Parker unveiled the monument on Sunday, November 14, 1937 as about 5,000 officials, guests and visitors looked on.

Islamorada:
Islamorada, a Village of Islands, is an incorporated village in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located on the islands of Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key and Plantation Key in the Florida Keys.
The name Islamorada (Original meaning: Island Home after the Pinder family schooner of that name), newly nicknamed, The Purple Isle, came from early Spanish explorers in the area. Its pronunciation has been anglicized to eye-lah-moh-RA-da.
Islamorada was hit almost directly by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, causing 423 deaths. A memorial, including the ashes of over 300 victims, exists today at Overseas Highway mile marker 82.
Hall of Fame baseball player Ted Williams began visiting Islamorada in 1943 and for the next 45 years was the island's most well-known resident. After his retirement from baseball he became the national spokesman for Sears sporting goods and became renowned for his abilities as a fisherman. Over the decades, he hosted numerous celebrities at his Islamorada house and took them on local fishing trips. Williams’ residency in Islamorada ended in 1988 when he moved to Hernando, Florida. Williams cited the island’s increased development as his reason for leaving. He reportedly said that he knew it was time to leave when he could no longer make a left turn on to U.S. Route 1 because of the traffic.
The village was incorporated on November 4, 1997. Prior to this date, Islamorada was only considered to be on the island of Upper Matecumbe Key.
As of the 2010 census, the village had a total population of 6,119. As of 2009, the population recorded by the United States Census Bureau is 6,435.

Blackfin Tuna Fishing in Florida
This is a short video, from Thanksgiving Weekend, of us throwing a few lines around the Ft. Pierce Inlet and trolling for a couple of hours about twenty miles offshore. The seas were a little rough, so one afternoon we slow-trolled a small lure in shallow water and caught something huge but it broke the line in the prop before we could get it in the boat.
Bridge Fishing (Bum Style) - Mangrove Snapper & a Hungry Flounder!
Welcome back to another video Saltoogans! In this video I head out to Bob Sykes bridge located in Pensacola, Florida in search of Mangrove Snapper & other table fare. I start off by catching the best bait for the time right now. & that is live LY's. I also decided to try out a new bridge cart idea that I have been thinking of the past couple of weeks. I had an old shopping cart that I had been given that's been laying around my house for awhile now. So I decided to bring it out and test it out on the bridge. Low and behold, this thing worked wonders! All in all I had a great trip out there and hope you guys enjoyed the video. Please feel free to leave a like as well as a comment if you guys have any questions. Until next time folks, Tight Lines! -Kaleb

A flash of gold in the depths is often the angler’s first sight. Dark fins indicate a blackfin tuna, not the similar—and potentially much larger—yellowfin. The species overlap in some waters off Florida.
Over the years, Florida Sportsman has covered the ins and outs of the blackfin tuna fishery around the Florida coastline: Places these fish are historically abundant, such as the famous Humps in the Florida Keys; the shrimp fleet in the Gulf of Mexico; bluewater ledges off Northeast Florida. We’ve researched baits that are productive—from live sardines to ballyhoo, small trolling plugs to streamer flies. We’ve covered the advent of fluorocarbon leader material, its low refractive index apparently conducive to fooling the sharp-eyed blackfins.
There are scattered records of blackfin tuna occurring as far north as Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, but the usual range is from North Carolina to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
The pectoral fins reach to somewhere between the twelfth dorsal spine and the origin of the second dorsal fin but they never extend beyond the second dorsal fin as in the albacore. There is a total of 19-25 (usually 21-23) gill rakers on the first arch (15-19 are on the lower limb), which is fewer than in any other species of Thunnus. The finlets are uniformly dark, without a touch of the bright lemon yellow usually present in those of other tunas. Light bars alternate with light spots on the lower flanks.
This is a pelagic, schooling fish that generally feeds near the surface. Its diet consists of small fishes, squid, crustaceans, and plankton. An excellent light tackle species, it can be taken by trolling or casting small baits or lures, including ballyhoo, mullet and other small fishes as well as strip baits, spoons, feathers, jigs, or plugs; or by live bait fishing from boats at the surface of deep waters one to two miles offshore. It has some local commercial importance, but is predominantly an angler's fish. It is a spunky game species and the flesh is of good quality and flavor

Deep dropping for blackbelly rosefish
When nothing else is biting, catch these small, tasty fish on the bottom of the ocean in 800 feet
September 13, 2012|By Steve Waters, Sun Sentinel
There are days when all an offshore angler wants to do is to come home with some fish for dinner.
But what's that angler to do when tasty species such as dolphin, cobia, tuna, snapper and grouper aren't biting?
That's when it's time to go deep for blackbelly rosefish.
For Capt. Mario Cote´and his son Capt. Kevin Cote´, who offer charter fishing trips out of Port Everglades Inlet on No Vacansea, deep dropping is almost always a sure way to guarantee fresh fish for the table.
Two weeks ago the two men, of Hollywood, had run more than a dozen miles offshore in search of dolphin, but the colorful fish were just not around. There were no weedlines or pieces of floating debris, which attract baitfish that attract dolphin. And the only birds they saw also were looking for fish.
Wanting to provide something for their guest to bring home, and since they were already out pretty far, they decided to stop in 800 feet off Hollywood on the way in and do some deep dropping.
While Mario used the boat's GPS unit to call up productive spots, Kevin set up their electric fishing outfit.
He clipped on a leader with five circle hooks and baited each with a piece of squid. Then he clipped a heavy, cylindrical lead weight to the end of the leader to get the baits to the bottom.
Soon after the weight touched down, the tip of the bent-butt rod, which Kevin left in the rod-holder, twitched a couple of times. He slowly cranked up some of the 80-pound braided line to entice a few more fish to bite, then hit the switch to turn on the reel and let it bring up the fish the rest of the way.
When the leader hit the rod tip, Kevin turned off the reel and lifted four blackbelly rosefish into the boat.
The bright reddish-orange fish don't get very big — 15 inches would be considered good-sized — but their firm, white fillets are delicious, something their guest confirmed a few days later when he called to say that the rosefish were the best fish he'd ever eaten.
