The Dolphin Explorer, Marco Island Florida
The Dolphin Explorer (Marco Island, Florida) departs from the Marco River Marina to the Gulf of Mexico to conduct a three-hour survey of the local population of bottlenose dolphins. The public is invited to join the survey team of naturalists and biologists, learn about and participate in the work of the 10,000 Island Dolphin Project, observe dolphins in their natural habitat. This eco-tour is part of a long term study to document the lives of coastal bottlenose dolphins of Southwest Florida. Over 170 dolphins have been photo ID'd, named, coded and cataloged to date.
We met Simon and his mom, Halfway; Nibbles and her calf, Jason; and many more dolphins.

Beached Whale in Florida
Lacey--this is a whale I came across one morning off the coast of Florida--the people from Sea World came to examine it, then they buried it under the sand--but they never did let us know what caused it to be separated from its mother and die. It was a sad sight, but an awesome thing to behold anyway.

Paddling with dolphins all around as we chased the sunset from Amelia Island to Tiger Island. The dolphins are there the entire time, you just have to look for them - even when you hear me saying they are gone. I'm holding the camera behind me, with the record button on - so there are some shaky parts.
Dolphin Facts:
*These are Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins. They spend just about their entire lives here in the harbor.
*Dolphins communicate using echo-location
*Some of these shots are of a baby with its mom - the moms have to teach the baby dolphin how to breathe and eat.

Day 18 DOLPHINS and MANATEES in THE WILD
Day 18 of our epic journey to Florida and back again...
We went to Marco Island and got on a boat to tour the area. Saw some manatees at the docks, a ton of different kinds of birds, and then got to see some dolphins!! If you skip to 6:44 you can see a dolphin chasing after a fish and then getting stuck on the land and has to wiggle back off into the water. Pretty cool! Sorry at some points the wind was really loud and my camera kept trying to focus. Thanks to Jesse who took us on the tour!
