Swimming With a Cute Dolphin in Croatia-Eye To Eye
I was chilling and enjoying beautiful Croatian seaside atmosphere when my mum rang at me saying that dolphin has arrived very close to the beach, so I grabbed my gopro and dived into water (you can hear the dolphin making sounds). Amazing experience at lovely peninsula of Pelješac.

Bottlenose Dolphin Volunteer Project In Croatia
This project is the longest ongoing study of a resident population of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Mediterranean Sea.
Bottlenose Dolphin Research Volunteering from the base in Losinj
The research focuses on dolphin population dynamics, photo – identification, behavioural sampling, acoustic monitoring, and the collection of stranding data for genetic, forage ecology and toxicological analysis. Data is used to produce a regular report on the status and ecology of the population and to offer solutions for their effective conservation. From the research station at Veli Lošinj we monitor the daily behaviour of the bottlenose dolphins of the region. It is now possible to identify around 450 individual dolphins with the help of photo-identification. Join them today on their boat as a volunteer.
Video Transcript Below:
Q: What are you researching at the moment?
Nikolina Rako Gospic, PhD Scientific Programme Director: ‘And we are actually monitoring the dolphins that are inhabiting this area, the West and the East side waters of the island of Losinj in Cres. And we are doing it by using non-invasive methods, so today we did photo I.D with the individuals that we saw. For us, it’s very important to make pictures, to make photos of all dorsal fins that we see during the encounter. Because, based on those fins we can identify the individuals and we can use that data to estimate the abundance of the population within these waters. The volunteers are always helping us to collect data because whilst we are doing photo I.D we are also collecting data on dolphin movements. We are also monitoring noise pollution and how it affects their vocalisation. We are focusing on dolphin whistles. We noticed already that there are shifts in their whistles due to the noise, adjusting the way they are communicating due to the noise present underwater. So, we would like to basically assess it.’
Q: Could you give us a day in the life of a volunteer?
Tihana Vucur, researcher and volunteer co-ordinator: ‘Always the first day is a little bit chaotic, because everybody is excited to see the dolphins, so when the dolphins come, especially when they’re like jumping, then everybody forgets what they need to do and start to enjoy it. But, I can say that they are, especially this year, they are a tremendous help to us because we are collecting a lot of data. Like, behaviour data or as Nikolina said dolphin movement data, navigation data, group analysis. So, like any observer on the boat is really useful. At the beginning they get their roles, and then during the two weeks they do the roles and helping us on the sea. Then, they see these dolphins here (boat riding?) and its like aaaaah!
Q: And what sort of feedback do you get from volunteers when they come back?
Tihana: ‘They say guys I miss you, I miss the dolphins, I am full of depression now looking at the photos through the cold winter to cheer me up, and such stuff. But, the people that came here like to see what they want for the future, like young students then they are like “I am definitely studying marine biology!”
Q: You are here as a student researcher… what exactly are you doing?
Lisa Granziol, student researcher: ‘I am here for my Masters thesis, for my course in marine biology. What I’m trying to do is, study about the signature whistle in bottlenose dolphins. We are trying to see if there is some differences between the whistles in groups with the males, without males and with males that we know have some alliances between them, and yes the other groups like females with calves.
Q: Are you enjoying your time here?
Lisa: Yes. I am.
Someone off-camera: she has to say that!
Lisa: No, it’s true I am really enjoying my time here, and now I am almost finished and I am a little bit sad. It has been a really really good experience for me.

Dolphin Swims Next To Fishing Boat
Fishermen were amazed when this wild dolphin swam alongside their boat. Miles Dimoski was onboard the vessel with colleagues when they spotted the creature off the coast of Rovin, Croatia, on May 24, 2019. The dolphin swam in front of the trawler before diving into the depths and disappearing.

My wife and I saw dolphins in Croatia during our boat trip to some caves.
We had charted a speedboat to go to some caves on some smaller islands in Croatia and our guide spotted some dolphins breaching so he stopped the boat. He said he only saw them a handful of times all last year.
