Whale watching May 2012 w/ Condor Express - Channel Islands
May 21, 2012
We had an incredible day out on the water. The whales were everywhere, along with California sea lions, White-sided dolphins and lots of seabirds. Keep in mind it was rough, windy and hard to hold on.
I knew my iPhone was going overboard at any moment as the whales were everywhere and we were running back and forth trying to see it all.....while they slapped against the boat, sprayed us with water and had as much fun with us as we did with them. It was an amazing day for Den, Bob and I....

I mean I think in this day and age, dues - that's the fees people pay to be part of an organisation like this, should be paid by bank transfer from government accounts to the IWC. I still hear that people are paying their dues in cash. I think that's unacceptable in this day and age and leaves an organisation open to accusations. You know, these may be perceptions not reality, but it's something this organisation has to tackle.

10. SOUNDBITE (English) The Honourable Tony Burke, Australian Minister for Environment:
On a number of occasions, they (Japan) are referring to 'research vessels'. This so-called scientific whaling lacks any scientific argument behind it. What's going on there is commercial whaling. Australia is opposed to commercial whaling. That's why we've taken Japan to the International Court of Justice. We have a good relationship with Japan, it's a difference between friends, but nonetheless it is a strong difference of opinion. We do not believe this is scientific research in any way. We view it as commercial whaling. We view it as being contrary to the moratorium.

STORYLINE:
Britain has said it wants to bring more transparency and accountability to the International Whaling Commission (IWC), an organisation that's been plagued by allegations of corruption in recent years.
At the IWC's 63rd annual meeting, taking place in the Channel Islands this week, the European Union supported the UK's package of reforms.
Those include forcing governments to pay their membership fees by bank transfers, which can be easily traced, instead of cash or cheques.
The UK's Minister for Natural Environment and Fisheries, Richard Benyon on Tuesday said that without these reforms, the IWC is left open to accusations of impropriety.
I think in this day and age, dues... should be paid by bank transfer from government accounts to the IWC, said Benyon, before a heated debate on the issue in the Jersey capital St. Helier.
The worry among some national delegations and with nongovernmental organisations, is that poorer or developing nations could have their subscription fees paid by pro-whaling nations such as Japan, in return for support at the IWC.
The Caribbean island nation of St Kitts and Nevis objected to the reform proposals.
Their objections were backed by Russia who made a complaint that the EU was not a full member of the IWC and therefore should not be able to table motions.
A decision on adopting the UK and EU initiative has now been postponed, but may still come up for a vote later this week.
Earlier Tuesday, Australia and Japan clashed verbally on the floor of the conference hall.
Japan showed video which they said highlighted violent actions by the Sea Shepherd anti-whaling group in the Antarctic seas earlier this year.
The delegate from Japan outlined weapons and tactics he said were used against the crews of Japanese vessels, and called on Australia to augment the protection given to Japanese ships.
Burke cast doubt on Japan's insistence that its ships in Antarctic waters were conducting scientific research.
This so-called scientific whaling lacks any scientific argument behind it, said Burke.
