The second of two travel videos in remote Ha Giang, Vietnam. We visit the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac including the Hmong palace, trekking in Dong Van, stunning drives through mountain country and the Sunday market at Meo Vac.

The Dong Van market fair in the northern most province of Ha Giang is held every Sunday. Dong Van is not only a newly-recognised global geological park but also a tourist attraction in Vietnam. Let's go shopping at Dong Van market. On sale are local products made by Mong, Han, Dao, Giay and Tay ethnic people. To reach the market on time they have to leave their homes very early in the morning or even one day earlier.
Dong Van market is opened once a week on Sunday in the centre of Dong Van town, Dong Van district, Ha Giang province.
Dong Van Hill-Tribe Sunday Market in Ha Giang Vietnam
Being one of the most outstanding hill-tribe markets in the Northern of Vietnam, Dong Van Sunday Market remains unique and “rich in culture” that not many other places can compare.
It takes place as early as 3:00 AM when the mist is still covering the hill and the tribes are passing by the mountains to arrive at the market in time. Often, the market begins about 5:00 AM and ends at 10:00 AM. At the market, people around the region bring their self-produced goods to the market zone to sell or exchange.
The colors of this hill-tribe gathering are diverse and interesting enough that marvel the first-time visitors. The gathering attracts numerous kinds of goods: the cattle, poultry, work tools, agricultural products, handicrafts, fabrics, local food, Ha Giang corn wine, etc. Years after years, the hill-tribe market of Dong Van becomes the indispensable part of the cultural and daily life of the Hmong. Not only does the market function as the place for selling, buying, or exchanging the goods, but it is also for meeting people, hanging out with friends, and learning the culture.

North Vietnam Loop: Ha Giang - Cao Bang
In October 2018 we started our trip in North Vietnam.
9 days motorbike loop: Ha Giang - Dong Van - Meo Vac - Bao Lac - Cao Bang (Ban Gioc Waterfall) - Babe Lake - Ha Giang.
Then we moved by bus to the Cat Ba Island and final stop was Ha Noi. Whole trip took 15 days.

Pioggia per i primi minuti e poi un sole che mi ha letteralmente ustionato. Arrivo ad Ha Giang, città grigia, mangio e vado a letto. Domani comincia il mio tour verso il nord estremo del Vietnam

Panorami stupendi in questa tappa.
100 chilometri di verde e risaie, mi danno il benvenuto le prime rocce carsiche, quelle famose che caratterizzano il nord del Vietnam (e il sud della Cina). Dune verdi e piramidi naturali sono in primo piano.
100 chilometri di pace ed una ruota bucata. 100 chilometri di pioggia tagliente…ma che piacere tutto questo !
Riscoprire i piaceri della natura sorridendo e reagire con lo stupore di un bimbo dinnanzi a tutto. La strada comincia a farsi più interessante con formazioni rocciose mai viste prima. La sera sosto a casa di una famiglia molto simpatica ma soprattutto con una cucina locale davvero deliziosa, la più buona fino ad ora… e senza sangue di gallina.

Dong Van
88 chilometri oggi, una tranquilla e rilassante passeggiata. Raggiungo Lung Cu per poter visitare la torre che indica il punto più estremo del Vietnam.
In realtà non è così, il punto più estremo è Cuc Bac, 5 chilometri da qui e non posso perdermelo. La Cina è così vicina che riesco quasi a toccarla.
Un diluvio blocca il mio cammino, un ora di attesa e si riparte.
Arrivo nella bella cittadina di Dong Van posizionata nel bel mezzo del nulla, NULLA !
Incontro due simpatici napoletani, doccia e riposo .
Domani voglio aumentare le distanze ed ho voglia di mare… ma sono nell’estremo opposto.

Cycling in Ha Giang is not for the faint hearted; riders there will face really tough climbs, with gradients often going over 10% and long stretches of road in which you will not see a single village or hamlet. But, hey, if you go there, that’s what you actually wants. And the rewards that such a trip offer are difficult to match: breathtaking views from some of the highest and most remote roads in Vietnam, discovering a land that has been almost unscathed by development and mass tourism, meeting ethnic minorities who are not used to show off for foreigners and might not be as interested in talking to you as you would expect.
Ma Pi Leng, the king of all passes in Viet Nam, is the name of the most dangerous pass in Ha Giang with total length of 20km and it lies on Happiness road which connects Ha Giang city, Dong Văn district and Meo Vac town.

About my trip: It took me 7 days to go to Dong Van from Ha Giang City and 1 day walking on White Skypath from Dong Van to Ma Pi Leng Pass.
⛰ With me Dong Van Karst Global Geopark is the most beautiful place in the north. The farthest place of Northern Vietnam, for now still untouched by mass tourism. You will see a lot of fantastic mountain sceneries and passes.
???? The best idea how to travel to Dong Van is rent a motorbike at Ha Giang city. Or you can try walking through over 140 km of mountain road and path. Challenge yourself and breakthrough your limitation.
One of the most beautiful area in Dong Van Karst is the road from Dong Van Town to Meo Vac Town. After a few minutes drive from Dong Van Town you will reach the famous road and mountain pass - Ma Pi Leng Pass. The main road in Dong Van was extended to cars and trucks.
???? But If you walk by foot, you can go deeper into remote and hard accessible area. One of them is White Skypath. It is a old walking path from Pai Lung town to Ma Pi Leng town has used by indigenous people for centuries.
???????????????? Dong Van Karst Global Geopark is the home of 17 ethnic minority groups with unique and rich cultural heritage.
You will be attracted by their traditional practices and habits. You can taste the alcohol made from corn.
Corn is main feeding crop in Dong Van Karst. Because of the lack of soil, people here must grow corn on cliffs. Those strong people have been living like that for many generations.
???????? Nowadays, with extended road, electricity network and clean water, life of Dong Van ethnic people is getting better. And the popularity of Dong Van Travel Tourism is growing.
In the future, Dong Van may face with many problems caused by the impact of mass tourism. But together we can protect this beautiful area.

Dong Van – An attractive destination in Ha Giang Province
Ha Giang Vietnam
Ha Giang is the capital of the most remote least visited province in Vietnam. I stopped at Ha Giang to have a look around and get a permit to visit the Chinese border towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac. I stayed at the Cao Nguyen hotel where the manager arranged my permit and organized the bus to Dong Van to pick me up the next morning. He was very helpful.

How To Do the Ha Giang Motorbike Loop: North Vietnam's Best Motorbike Trip (in Dong Van Geopark)
This video is a reference for the Ha Giang Motorbike Loop in North Vietnam. It's a fantastic trip that I haven't seen a lot of information about, so I thought I'd make this video in case anyone out there is looking to do the same motorbike loop that I did.
Where: Ha Giang Province in North Vietnam
What: 3 - 5 Day Incredible Motorbike Trip in Vietnam
How: Bring your own motorbike to the north, or rent a bike in Ha Giang City.
How we did the motorcycle loop:
Day 1: Start in Ha Giang City at a Hostel called Bong Hostel. It's the only hostel in Ha Giang (as of July, 2016). Here's a link to Bong Hostel:

Drive to Yenh Minh and stay at a Home Stay. Bong Hostel has info about home stays in Yen Minh.
Day 2:
Leave Yenh Minh and drive to Meo Vac. Stop for lunch. Drive up through the beautiful mountain pass, up to Dong Van. Stay in Dong Van at a cheap hotel. No hostels in Dong Van to my knowledge.
Day 3:
Drive from Dong Van north to Lung Cu, where there is the famous flag pole overlooking the North Vietnamese hills and seeing all the way into China.
Return to Dong Van for another night. See the Sunday Morning Market if you have the chance.
Day 4: Drive back from Dong Van, all the way back to Ha Giang City. It's about 160 KM, which doesn't sound like much, but on a rental bike in the mountains under the hot sun it is. So leave early and try not to make too many stops if this is your plan.
Safety precautions: This is a more advanced ride. That doesn't mean a confident beginner should be completely turned off of it. But it means that they probably shouldn't ride alone, and should be very comfortable with their bikes, and have basic road safety knowledge.
Even more dangerous than the roads are the oncoming shuttle buses, who often drive like maniacs in Vietnam.
