Dongguan Palace and Wolji Pond, formerly known as Anapji, is an artificial pond in Gyeongju National Park, South Korea. It was part of the palace complex of the ancient Silla Dynasty that ruled for over 100 years. It was constructed by order of King Munmu in 674 CE

The price to enter was very cheap like all sites in Gyeongju. Adults were around $2.50USD. Once the sun goes down the pond gets illuminated.

Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond were the secondary palace site which was used for the palace of the Crown Prince along with other subsidiary buildings. It was also a banquet site for important national event and important visitors. After the fall of Silla, the site was abandoned and forgotten. The pond was referred to as Anapji during the Goryeo and Joseon period. In the 1980s, pottery fragment with letters “Wolji” (a pond that reflects the moon) carved onto it was found, revealing the true name of the pond. After the discovery, the site was renamed to the current Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond.

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond in Gyeongju (former name is Anapji) is an artificial pond in Gyeongju National Park, South Korea. It was part of the palace complex of ancient Silla (57 BCE - 935 CE). Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond in Gyeongju (former name is Anapji) is an artificial pond in Gyeongju National Park, South Korea. It was part of the palace complex of ancient Silla (57 BCE - 935 CE). It was constructed by order of King Munmu in 674 CE. The pond is situated at the northeast edge of the Banwolseong palace site, in central Gyeongju. It is an oval shape; 200m from east to west and 180m from north to south. It contains three small islands. According to my Korean friend, a prince used to live in this palace.

Woryeonggyo Bridge with sad a love story and Hahoe Folk Village, the birthplace of mask - Fall under the spell of Andong
The first travel destination of Korean Idol Simba and Vietnamese model Chau is Andong. Their journey begins at the Woryeonggyo Bridge which is known to be the longest footbridge made of wood in Korea. The legend behind this bridge is that if you cross the bridge holding hands you will not break up with your lover. Despite communication difficulty, they do their best to communicate by using body language and little bit of English. Then they quickly move to Hahoe Folk Village, the birthplace of mask. Simba and Chau visit and meet Hahoe mask dance artisan and Seonadang where play was used to be performed in the past. Not only the Hahoe mask and other stories and scenes but also they start to get to know each other.

From Mungyeongsaejae where bird finds the crossing difficult to Cheong-do where Wine Tunnel and Provence are.
Mungyeongsaejae is well-known as a mountain pass where scholars used to go through for the government official examination and Mungyeongsaejae Open Set was created and used for a variety of historical publications. Simba and Chau is having a good time enjoying flogging experience and king and queen makeover. Next destination is Cheong-do. An old tunnel was renovated and refurbished into a wine cellar. They taste the persimmon wine, a local specialty. In Provence, which is a perfect place to take pictures because of beautiful night view, they keep the great memory of Gyeonsangbuk-do Cheong-do in their minds.

Go to Gyeongju, the heart of Silla culture where Bulguksa Temple, Cheomseongdae Observatory, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond and Expo are
The capital of Silla - Seorabeol. This city, now named Gyeonju, is the living evidence of history and culture of Silla. Bulguksa Temple where Buddha's mercy is preserved, and Cheomseongdae observatory, the oldest astronomical observatory in the East. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond with full of beautiful pond and building. The cultural expo was added to a such historical land and Gyeongju is now reformed as the heart of culture that crosses between past and present. The journey of Simba and Chau that goes around these places now shines brighter.

한국 아이돌 심바와 베트남 모델 짜우의 첫 여행지는 바로 경북 안동. 끝까지 손을 잡고 다리를 건너면 헤어지지 않는다는 전설을 간직한 국내 최장 목책교인 월영교에서 두 스타의 여행은 시작된다. 제대로 말이 통하지도 않지만, 짧은 영어는 물론 손짓 발짓을 다해가며 서로 이야기하는 두 사람. 어색함을 느낄 새도 없이, 다음 여행지인 탈의 본고장 하회마을을 찾아간다. 하회탈춤의 장인도 만나보고, 실제 공연이 이루어지던 서낭당도 찾아가보는 심바와 짜우. 하회탈은 물론 또 다른 풍경과 이야기들을 만나면서 두 사람은 차츰 서로를 알아간다.

새도 넘기 힘들다는 문경새재를 넘어 와인터널과 프로방스가 있는 청도까지
옛날 과거 시험을 보러가는 선비들이 넘나들며 유명해진 고개 문경새재. 각종 사극 드라마의 세트장으로도 유명한 이곳에서 심바와 짜우도 왕과 왕비로 변신해보기도 하고 곤장 체험도 하며 즐거운 한 때를 보낸다. 다음 목적지는 청도. 오래된 터널을 개조해 와인저장고로 재탄생한 와인터널에 들러 향기 그윽한 특산품 감 와인도 맛보고, 야경이 아름다워 사진 찍기에 안성맞춤인 청도 프로방스에서는 서로의 모습을 담으며 아름다운 경북 청도에서의 추억들을 새긴다.

◆ Team Masters' Itinerary
Team Masters is off to Gyeongju's hot spots by searching through SNS postings.
Its first stop is Bulguksa Temple, which represents the Korean Buddhism and is designated as world cultural heritage by UNESCO. The team enjoysthe flavor of an ancient temple with a thousand years of history.
Afterwards, the team pays a visit to Donggungwon, a reproduction of Donggung and Wolji, the first zoo and botanical garden of Korea, and meets a variety of animals.
Meanwhile, Team Masters learned about Hwangnidangil Road, rising as a hot spot of Gyeongju on SNS postings. The team looks around eclectic shops located in hanbok buildings from the 70's and the 80's and soaks in Hwangnidan's unique vibe.
The last stop is a popular restaurant at Hwangnidangil Road! The team gets to enjoy exotic pizzas at a hanok pizza joint, feeling a hanok's ambiance.

◆ Team Rookies' Itinerary
Team Rookies is off to Gyeongju based on a travel guide map.
The team visits Cheomseongdae, Gyeongju's landmark and Korea's treasure with a thousand years of history.
The team learns about a story behind Cheomseongdae, and enjoys magnificent pink waves at the pink muhly field, a hot spot at Cheomgseongdae.
Afterwards, Team Rookies goes to Golgulsa Temple, the home of seonmudo. It falls in love with the unique charms of Golgulsa Temple, the first Korean manmade temple in a grotto, and learns seonmudo, martial arts for monks.
The team is then off to Gyochon Village based on the travel guide map, where it can feel the Korean traditions. The team meets donggyeongi, a breed of dog indigenous to Gyeongju and a Korean National Monument, and learns about its origin.
Afterwards, it fully savors the night view at Donggung and Wolji, which are famous for beautiful night view of the historical Gyeongju! Lastly, the team tastes gondalbi (narrow-head ragwort) bibimbapand yukbuchon yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), all madewith gondalbi, Gyeongju's local ingredient,to wrap up the trip.

◆ 마스터즈팀의 여행은?
SNS 검색을 통해 경주의 핫스팟으로 여행을 떠난 마스터즈팀.
첫 번째로 마스터즈팀이 찾은 곳은 유네스코가 지정한 세계문화유산,
한국 불교를 대표하는 사찰! 불국사에서 천년고찰의 정취를 느껴본다.

그 후, 선무도의 본향, 골굴사를 찾은 루키즈팀. 국내 최초의 인공 석굴사원 골굴사에서 이색 사찰의 매력에 빠져보고 스님들의 무예, 선무도를 배워보는 시간을 가진다.
관광안내지도를 통해 한국의 전통을 느낄 수 있는 교촌마을로 향한 루키즈팀. 교촌마을에서 한국의 천연기념물, 경주개 동경이를 만나 그 유래를 알아본다.
그 다음, 역사를 품고 있는 경주의 아름다운 야경 명소, 동궁과 월지에서 야경을 만끽!
마지막으로 경주의 향토재료인 곤달비를 이용한 곤달비 비빔밥과 육부촌 육개장을 맛보며 여행을 마무리한다.

Korea Travel Vlog | Exploring Gyeongju UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Historic Gyeongju is the perfect travel destination for those who want to get off the beaten path in Korea. The city has a rich history that dates back over 2,000 years ago.

We decided to spend our 1st day in Busan exploring the beautiful Gyeongju. We booked a whole day tour package through KLOOK for 70,000 KRW per person with an english guide and a tour bus. I must say, Gyeongju is a place that has so much to offer. There is a lot of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that you can see and explore. If you have at least a week in Korea, i would highly suggest to take this tour and you will learn so much about the history in Korea.

Nice, quiet and within walking distance of the Gyeongju National Museum. Catch the bus at the bus stop in front of the main entrance to head back towards the inter-city bus terminal (downtown Gyeongju).

Everyone says this place is best when visited at night. I had other plans.
