We send the ice season packing off in style with an adventure you won’t want to miss!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Fish Creek & Ephraim (#612)
[Latest Airdate: January 4, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 9, 2017]
Fish Creek and Ephraim are just minutes away from each other in Door County. While these communities are really different, they are both part of the same wonderful Door County experience. We're on the bay (west) side --- also known as the busy side. Indeed, John had a full agenda, as do most tourists who come to this part of Door County, but this turned out to be one of the most relaxing episodes because that's how Fish Creek and Ephraim are. You can't help but walk a little slower, talk a little less and smile a little more. Well, John didn't follow suit on the talk a little less part because he's a television host and talking to people is what he does. And what fun conversations he had at Lautenbach's Orchard Country Winery and Market, Edgewood Orchard Galleries, Wilson's, and with everyone he met. And since John spent a good deal of time here acting, he couldn't wait to catch up with both famous theater groups. The busy side of the Door in September. We highly recommend it!

Reconnecting Through Fishing : Door County Wisconsin Fishing Trip
On a Sunday afternoon in mid-August, the 50 Campfires team explored the inland lakes of Door County, Wisconsin. We fished Kangaroo Lake, Clark Lake and Green Bay. Because we were so close to Nick's sister, we invited her to join us for the day.
Special thanks to Zebco! If you're looking for a great reel combo for every member of the family, check out their 33 reel. It's a classic:
----------
When I was a kid, my sister and I would ride our bikes to a nearby lake each summer to swim and fish. Growing up in rural Southeastern Wisconsin, our outdoor childhood helped us work through problems, gain self-reliance, understand ourselves...and looking back on it - each other. Now that we’re both grown, with families of our own - it’s been decades since we’ve found the time to sit at the edge of a lake, fishing poles in hand, and reconnect. Today is that day.
A handful of times each year, I head out on the road with the 50 Campfires team for something that we call “Field Trips”. It’s our way to explore the places and meet the people that call these outdoor destinations home. The team decided to wrap up this summer in the Midwest - exploring around Lake Michigan. When I saw our route, and realized how close we’d be to my sister - I knew that this could be our chance to relive a bit of our childhood, with fishing rods in hand - just a hop, skip and jump away from where it all began.
We made plans to meet up at a tackle shop outside of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. I’ve learned from traveling around the country, that the fish are rarely “waiting” for you wherever you decide to drop a line into the water - and I usually try to gain some local fishing insight whenever I visit a new lake. It would also provide us a chance to get our “hello’s” out of the way - before we shared an experience that we hadn’t had together since before we could drive.
I realized that I was probably pushing the envelope a bit, but mapped out three different spots that I wanted to fish around Door County, Wisconsin. I’ve often fished with “non-hardcore” fishermen and women, and know that idea of just sitting on the end of a dock for hours on end can quickly erode any of the fun. I figured that moving around a bit and trying different techniques would keep the interest high. Not to mention, I had my 9 year old son along on the trip - which created an additional level of complexity to keeping things engaging.

I've noticed a few stores I tried to go to have cut back on their Halloween supplies. We recently had a door thing (decoration) stolen and I went back to the place I purchased it from and they told me that they've cut back because not as many people are buying this year.

Like now with the economy's a little tougher this year, I've noticed we get a people who come out, but their not spending quite as much but they're still going away happy. They're getting pumpkins and maybe they're not buying quite a bigger pumpkins or maybe not as many. I see buying more squash and stuff that they can use for decorations and they can eat and make pies out of afterwards. In other words people are shopping a little more thriftier than they used to.

Because they can come to a festival like this and it's very crowded this year, so it looks like people are enjoying themselves almost like the recession is over.

36. SOUNDBITE (English) Bob Schmidt, crafts vendor:
This year's a lot better than last year, so it looks like people are loosening their pocketbooks a little bit more, and the crowd is spending money. My neighbour said the same thing. Compared to last year, we're doing a lot better.

LEAD IN :
It's nearly Halloween, and in the United States that means pumpkins and parties.
But last autumn's financial meltdown, which wiped out trillions of dollars in household wealth, put an end to easy credit.
And that's now impacting on seasonal spending like Halloween.
STORYLINE:
Visitors roll wheelbarrows through Bob Marsh's Pumpkin field searching for the perfect Halloween decoration.
One picker, Nick, says that Halloween decorations are hard to come by in the stores this year.
The Pumpkin Farm has been in Bob Marsh's family for a century.
He remembers the days when pumpkins went for 5 cents apiece.
Perspectives on how the economy is affecting this year's Halloween differ.

Door County Distillery Ground Breaking - Part 1 of 2
November 8, 2010 - Door Peninsula Winery in Carlsville is adding a new venture, Door Peninsula Distillery, to be completed in May.
The 6,500-square-foot distillery will be a new building showcasing Door County stone over a round structure. The inside will look like a whiskey barrel.
In addition to the distillery, the $2 million project includes a two-story water feature in the foyer of the main entrance; a bridge from the winery to the distillery, allowing guests to look down on the production area; major remodeling of the winery's retail, production and tasting area; and a second-story outdoor dining area for Bistro 42.
We're so proud to bring this dream to life for the Pollmans and Door Peninsula Winery, said Jeff Dorner, who's overseeing the project for Van's Lumber and Custom Builders of Dyckesville. We've had a strong relationship with this family for many years. Van's is excited to work on this unique project.
Door County Ramble
The Door Peninsula, a narrow finger of land that juts into Lake Michigan, is home to one of Wisconsin's most beloved and least commercialized resort areas. This multimedia show is the culmination of nearly 25 years of still photography - film and digital - plus video from recent trips, combined with music to capture the essence of Door County.
The most scenic way to drive to Door County is to exit US 43 at Manitowoc and serendipitously wander north along Hwy 42, which winds through picturesque towns like Kewaunee and Algoma, and then onto County Road S. North of Sturgeon Bay is a different world altogether. There are no traffic lights, industries, or 'big box' stores. The pace is slower and there are quaint resort towns, orchards, unspoiled scenic vistas, or pristine gardens around nearly every bend. Technology and trendiness are superseded by antiquity and tradition. Even in fog and rain, the landscapes appear ethereal and romantic.
The influence of early Scandinavian settlers is quite evident in the area's culture and customs. Fine arts thrive - art galleries, craft shops, and music and theater venues abound. Antique and curio hunters will find interesting shops in each town. Roadside farm markets sell locally-grown produce and jams, pickles, cheese, sausage, and baked goods. There are no hotel or motel chains; the charming bed-and-breakfast inns and remote lodges are virtual time capsules. One place still uses an old-fashioned telephone switchboard. Instead of national restaurant chains, there are generations-old eateries ranging from supper clubs to ice cream parlors. In the town of Ephraim, Wilson's in particular looks like a real-life version of a Norman Rockwell painting.
Boring? Not. Besides boating, fishing, golf, and biking or hiking through any of several State Parks, there is a full calendar of festivals and events, especially from April through October.
The legendary Fish Boil at the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek is featured in this video. Stomachs full, tourists waddle down to road's end at Sunset Beach to watch the sunset, then cheer and applaud once the sun dips below Green Bay. This quirky ritual recalls simple pleasures and forgotten traditions. Do you remember those after-dinner family gatherings in the music room to sing cheesy old songs? This video captures those days!
Nelson Shopping Center - True Value - Door County tribute (1945-2016)
After 71 years in business, the legendary Nelson Shopping Center in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin is shutting its doors after a long battle with governmental regulations and the DNR. I put together a tribute montage to a place where I have several memories dating back to childhood.
