Doseonsa Temple (도선나) in Seoul - TRAVEL KOREA
I went with two of my co-teachers and another faculty member to the famous Doseonsa Temple, on Bukhansan mountain. It was about a 20 minute drive from the school I teach English at.
Doseonsa is a temple of the Jogye Order of Buddhism here in Seoul, Korea. The temple was established 1,100 years ago during the latter part of the Shilla Dynasty, but the original structures of the temple don't exist anymore.

Younjuam: Seoul's Mountain Temple

Recently, Jo and I ventured out from our home on a beautiful Sunday morning to tackle a close-by temple, one that stands unique among others in Korea: Younjuam. Rather than resting in a city center or on a mountain, Younjuam's claim to fame is its unique location near the summit of Gwanaksan. In Korea, it is very rare to have a religious center so close to the peak of a mountain, making this excursion truly special.
The temple itself dates back to 677, right in the Goryeo Dynasty. It was first given the name Gwanaksa, or Gwanak Mountain Temple, but the facilities were later renamed under the Joseon era as Younjuam. The temple's primary role was to allow monks to study Buddhist scriptures in the seclusion offered by the mountains. During the Joseon Dynasty, the temple erected a one story stone pagoda. It is said that this monument was erected by Grand Prince Hyoryeong, brother to King Sejong. Hyoryeong retreated to the temple and became a monk after his brother ascended the throne.
There are two routes to the temple: 1) start from Seoul University and take the long way; or 2) ride Line 4 to Gwacheon Station and stretch your legs once outside exit 7. This is the route we took. The Korean Tourism Information Line also recommends this way, since the total distance to the temple is just under 5km from the station and 3.6 from the trail head. Those hiking should bring a liter of water to stay properly hydrated. The trail is rocky and well traveled. Two watering stations and several restrooms are present on the way up to the temple, so there is no need to carry a lot of gear. Total hiking time will take a fit person under an hour, while those in moderate shape can easily make the climb in 90-100 minutes.

[Korea Tour Guide] Seoul - Bongwonsa Temple (봉원사)
Located at the skirt of Ansan Mountain in Bongwon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, Bongwonsa temple , as the center of Korean Buddhism Taego, is a thousand year old temple with a long history and tradition. In 889 (3rd year of Shilla Jinseong Queen’s reign), Master Dosun founded it at the ground of Yeonhui palace (now Yonsei Univ.) and named it Banyasa temple. It was destroyed during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, and later in 1748 (24th year of Joseon King Yeongjo’s reign), it was rebuilt and renamed “Bongwonsa” by two Buddhist monks, Chanjeup and Jeungam.
“Yeongsanjae”, one of the Buddhist rituals and also the Important Intangible Cultural Properties No. 50, takes place at Bongwonsa on June 6 every year wishing for the world peace and the reunification of North and South Korea. It was designated as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009. During Yeongsanjae, visitors can enjoy the Buddhist arts such as Beompae (Buddhist temple music for rituals) and dancing. Also, during summer time, “Seoul Lotus Flower Culture Festival” takes place, so visitors can enjoy the beautiful lotus flowers which are a symbol of Buddhism.
[TRIPofJHL] Climbing Bukhansan Mountain in Seoul, Korea
Video of Bukhansan Mountain climbing locating in Seoul & Goyang & Uijeongbu, South Korea.
The former name of the mountain was Samgaksan having three peaks of Baegunbong, Insubong and Mangyeongdae.
Starting from Baegundae Visitor Center, climbed up the mountain until Baegundae Summit and came down to Jeongneung Visitor Center after passing Bogukmun Gate. It was not a proper route at the end and took me a long lazy time. I think downward was almost twice of climbing distance.
The difficulty was higher than I thought as I pulling ropes and stepping on steep hills. It was the highest mountain in Seoul, indeed. 2 hours and a half to up, half an hour on top and 2 hours and a half to go down. Elapsed approximately 5 hours and a half from the beginning to the end.
Bukhansan that is locating in northern Seoul is 837m high and very popular. It is said there's a series of climbers when it's in a good season. Early April had just a few visitors with few flowers. However, the track from Baegundong Ammun Gate to Baegundae Summit was crowded. Since Baegundae Summit eats tough blasts from every direction, people take a break flat rocky area underneath and watch the landscape of Seoul. It is one of the most popular touristic spots for foreigners and I could see some foreign visitors.

travel - Bukhansan - Seoul - Korea
The Bukhansan National Park (Korean: 북한산국립공원, 北漢山國立公園) in Seoul and Gyeonggi covers an area of 79.92 km2 (30.86 sq mi) and was established on 2 April 1983. Bukhansan means mountains north of the Han River.
The park contains forested areas, temples and granite peaks. The three main peaks are Baekundae, 836.5 m (2,744 ft), Insubong, 810.5 m (2,659 ft) and Mangnyeongdae, 799.5 m (2,623 ft). Due to its popularity with hikers and Seoul residents, some trails are closed on a rotation basis to protect the local environment.
The Bukhansanseong Fortress is located in the park, together with its 9.5 km (5.9 mi) long defensive wall. A fortress was first built on this site in 132 AD to protect Seoul from foreign invasions, and it was expanded to its current size in 1711. It was reconstructed after damage sustained in the Korean War. Despite its name, this mountain is in Seoul, South Korea, so this mountain should not be confused with North Korea (also referred to as 북한, bukhan).

Gangnam's Bongeunsa Temple (강남구 봉은사) - ???????? SEOUL WALK
Filmed with GoPro + ZhiYun Z1 Pround 3 axis gimbal stabilizer.
Come walk around Bongeunsa, a Buddhist temple in the heart of Seoul's Gangnam district!
Marie and I spent a wonderful spring afternoon walking around the famous Bong-eun-sa temple located in the middle of Gangnam district, right across the street from the famous COEX Mall.
This temple was founded in 794 A.D., and has experienced a history of attacks and fires. Most recently, it was almost completely burned down in 1939 and the Korean War, with only 1 building surviving the major fires. Since then, the majority of the complex has been rebuilt and is even undergoing construction projects to this day.
In the middle of busy Gangnam district, one should take a step back into the past by visiting this temple. It's definitely worth it!
This temple also offers a Temple Stay program for visitors.

A visit to the Jinkwansa Temple in Seoul Korea
A highlight of my recent Seoul adventure was an afternoon spent at the Jinkwansa Temple ( one of the four main temples around Seoul. We toured the buildings and had a monastic lunch, made solely of good vegetables. We then had the opportunity to meet the Mother Superior and have tea with her.
The temple is a unique cultural experience and also offers a temple stay program. In addition to a great destination for visitors, it's also a great site for meetings and convention trips (MICE) and is part of the Seoul MICE alliance (

SEOUL SUBWAY: Banghak Station to Jihaeng Station (방학역부터 지행역까지)
Dongducheon, where my relatives live, is located 30 minutes North of Seoul on Line 1 (Dark Blue Line). It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach Jihaeng Station from my stop at Banghak Station, which is also on Line 1. I'm very lucky my relatives live so close to me and that I don't have to transfer at all! I just hop on the train and it's a straight-shot to Jihaeng Station in Dongducheon.
I took out the station stop footage and sound barrier wall footage so you can see most of the trip in just 11 minutes instead of 30 minutes.
I thought it would be neat to show you all what it looks like just North of Seoul... it's a mixture of rural farmland and development.
