MLK Jr. Service Day
Service projects around the United States worked to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s work and dedication for our country.
Here in Charleston, students and community members rose to the occasion and volunteered their day off to make a difference.
Director of Civic Engagement and Volunteerism at Eastern Illinois University Beth Gillespie says she believes honoring Dr. King's legacy is important for everyone.
He was a man that had such tremendous impact, and was so brilliant and such a fierce advocate for ensuring that all of us had the same civil rights. It feels especially relevant today with everything that is going on in our country, Gillespie said.
Eastern Illinois University students spent their day off by making gifts for sick children in hospitals, writing post cards to future students, and painting flower pots for nursing homes.
Eastern graduate student Sheldon Aaron said he volunteered today to give back to his community.
With everything going on in the world, I think it's really important to promote compassion and I think that's what volunteering allows people to do is to give respect and compassion and kind of create equality within all of us in our own different lives, Aaron said.
Community members also had the opportunity to get their hands dirty.
Here at the Douglas Hart Nature Center, children and their parents are volunteering their time to prepare the plants for spring.
Land Steward Director Marissa Grant said the nature center staff really appreciates the help they get from volunteers.
A lot of times we have cub scouts and they'll come out with their families and how fun is it that your parents have the day off and you have the day off and you guys are doing a service project together,” said Grant.

The Paw Report, Episode 711 - Monarch Butterfly
Jennifer Tariq of Douglas-Hart Nature Center in Mattoon, IL, talks about the Monarch Butterfly.
Wolf Road Prairie
A wonderful and magical gem. This is the place that first inspired me to take wild life photo's.
The 80 acre Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve is co-owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC). The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission (INPC) oversees management and protection of the site.
Wolf Road Prairie contains several native communities, including mesic prairie, mesic savanna and wetland and is home to more than 360 native plant species. The numbers of resident and migratory birds, amphibians, insects, butterflies and mammals are too numerous to count. Combined, the ecosystem features of the site create a one-of-a-kind natural area unlike any other in the world. The prairie remnant at Wolf Road Prairie is considered the largest and best quality black soil or mesic prairie east of the Mississippi River. The prairie is considered globally imperiled and the black soil savanna is considered globally critically imperiled according to the Chicago Wilderness Biodiversity Recovery Plan. The wetland on site is considered of high aquatic quality.
Just 15 miles west of the Chicago Loop and accessible by major expressways, highways and roads, Wolf Road Prairie is a world renowned tourist destination attracting visitors to its magnificent wilderness landscape, diverse wildlife and natural and human history. Wolf Road Prairie and the Prairie House generate tourist revenue as a local economic engine, and a scientific and education resource for nature study, and cultural programs and events. Wolf Road Prairie combines the preservation of land and nature in the urbanized Chicagoland region and as an Urban Eco-Site is comparable to ecotourism sites around the world. Because of these features and values, it is the belief of STPS that efforts must continue to preserve and protect Wolf Road Prairie and bufferlands as open space and wildlife habitat for the greater public benefit.
