Dr Pepper Museum | Waco, Texas
The Dr Pepper Museum & Free Enterprise Institute opened to the public in May 1991 and has hosted over 1,700,000 visitors. It is located in Waco, Texas and is the home of the Nation’s oldest major soft drink.
The Museum is housed in the 1906 Artesian Manufacturing and Bottling Company building located in downtown Waco. The 100 year-old building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the “Home of Dr Pepper.” The Museum receives the support of Keurig Dr Pepper and its affiliated bottlers but is not owned or operated by them.
Located at the corner of Fifth Street and Mary Avenue in the turn of the century manufacturing district, the vacant bottling plant was in a sad state of repair in a neighborhood comprised mostly of abandoned warehouses that was officially declared as “blighted” by the City. The Waco Chamber of Commerce and the City of Waco hoped that the Museum would be a catalyst for renewed energy and growth in the area, with the potential for restaurants and shops in the old warehouses down the street similar to the “West End” district in Dallas.

Dr Pepper Company donated the historic building to the nonprofit organization in 1988. Renovation began in the summer of 1990. The building formally opened to the public on May 11, 1991. At that time, only a small portion of the ground level was open to the public. During the next six years, the Museum embarked on three additional construction phases until the entire building was restored and opened in May 1997.
The Museum is home to the W. W. Clements Free Enterprise Institute. The Institute was created in 1997 for the purpose of educating school children as well as adults about the economic system that underlies American life. The program uses the soft drink industry as a model to teach students about developing, producing, and marketing products. An exhibit about the life of W.W. Clements and his philosophy of life, free enterprise, and business ethics opened in 2008 on the third floor of the Museum.
The Museum employs a staff of museum professionals and educators that work with the Board of Directors to fulfill the Museum’s mission. The Museum has an annual operating budget of approximately $500,000 that it derives from contributions, memberships, admissions, and the sale of merchandise through its for profit subsidiary, DP Museum Enterprises.
History of Dr Pepper Museum
The Museum has received contributions from Keurig Dr Pepper, the Coca Cola Company, Coca Cola Enterprises, Big Red Corporation, and numerous independent soft drink bottlers. We are recognized as the only nonprofit museum in the country dedicated to the entire soft drink industry. At the time it opened to the public, the Museum’s collection of artifacts totaled approximately 1,600. Today that collection includes over 300,000 artifacts.
In 2007, the Museum completed a new collections and archives storage center in the historic Kellum-Rotan Building, which we refer to as the East Wing Building. This has paved the way for the growth and consolidation of our collections and archives in one space. Our collection is now one of the largest and best in the world. In 2008, the façade of the Kellum–Rotan Building was completely restored. New administrative offices, education center, and board room were complete in 2011. In May of 2016 the East Wing Building opened to the public with new gift shop and soda fountain spaces and the Emerson Holt – Ted Getterman Exhibit Gallery.
The Dr Pepper Museum Waco TX
The Dr Pepper Museum, located in the Artesian Manufacturing and Bottling Company building in downtown Waco, Texas, opened to the public in 1991. The building was the first building to be built specifically to bottle Dr Pepper. It was completed in 1906, and Dr Pepper was bottled there until the 1960s. The museum has three floors of exhibits, a working old-fashioned soda fountain, and a gift store. It was formulated by Brooklyn-born pharmacist Charles Alderton in Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas. To test his new drink, he first offered it to store owner Wade Morrison, who also found it to his liking. Patrons at Morrison's soda fountain soon learned of Alderton's new drink and began ordering a Waco. Alderton gave the formula to Morrison, who named it Dr. Pepper. The name Dr. Pepper was first used commercially in 1885. It was introduced nationally in the United States at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition as a new kind of soda pop, made with 23 flavors. Its introduction in 1885 preceded the introduction of Coca-Cola by one year making it the oldest major manufacturer of soft drink concentrates and syrups. What are the 23 flavors? The 23 flavors are cola, cherry, licorice, amaretto (almond, vanilla, blackberry, apricot, blackberry, caramel, pepper, anise, sarsaparilla, ginger, molasses, lemon, plum, orange, nutmeg, cardamon, all spice, coriander juniper, birch and prickly ash.
I knew it had 23 flavors but had no idea what they were. I also was not aware that it started here in Waco TX. For a town that all I knew about was the Waco Siege there is alot more positive things that has happened here. Also for those that watch HGTV’s hit show Fixer Upper. (Never seen it) The hosts own Magnolia Market in downtown Waco. My next stop.

You can’t go to central Texas without visiting Waco.
Since Ace and I were camping in central Texas, we decided to take a day and spend it in Waco, Texas. Waco is not a very large town, but has a lot of history. It has become more well known since the premier of the show on HGTV called the Fixer Upper, hosted by Chip and Joanne Gaines. The show has grown over the years and the hosts have since created their own brand and market place called Magnolia Market.
Magnolia Market is a complex that is much larger than what you think. With outdoor green space, food trucks, and a bakery, you can most certainly spend a couple hours, but be prepared. The market and show has gained notoriety and popularity & because of this it will be CROWDED. We went on a Monday (although it was a holiday) , but did not expect the crowds we ran into. Also, you might experience some “sticker shock” when looking to purchase something from the market.
If you didn’t know, Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco when a man was experimenting with soda flavors. Since the museum is one block away from Magnolia Market, we decided to take advantage. Although the museum is a little small, it is very informative about the history of the product and brand. Admission even includes a free soda from their retro style soda fountain where they mix the flavored syrup with carbonated water when you order.

On our way to San Saba Texas, Robin and I stopped in Dublin Texas, To check out the Dr Pepper Museum. This is a great stop, a lot of history about how Dr. Pepper got started. Don't expect to taste any Dr Pepper with the pure cane sugar in it, because they don't make it there anymore. The Dr Pepper company sued them for making it!I Can't understand why, sounds silly! Anyway if you're in the area be sure to stop check out the Dr Pepper Museum.

In 1885, in Waco, Texas, a young pharmacist called Charles Alderton invented the soft drink Dr Pepper.
Alderton worked at a place called Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store and carbonated drinks were served at the soda fountain. Alderton invented his own recipes for soft drinks and found one of his drinks was becoming very popular. His customers originally asked for the drink by asking Alderton to shoot them a Waco.
Morrison, owner of the drug store is credited with naming the drink Dr Pepper after a friend of his, Dr. Charles Pepper. Later in the 1950s the period was removed from the Dr Pepper name.
As demand grew Alderton and Morrison had trouble manufacturing enough Dr Pepper for their customers. Then in stepped, Robert S. Lazenby, Lazenby owned The Circle A Ginger Ale Company in Waco and was impressed with Dr Pepper. Alderton did not want to pursue the business and manufacturing end of soft drinks and agreed that Morrison and Lazenby should take over and become partners.
In 1891, Morrison and Lazenby formed the Artesian Mfg. & Bottling Company, which later became the Dr Pepper Company.
In 1904, the company introduced Dr Pepper to 20 million people attending the 1904, World's Fair Exposition, in St. Louis. That same world's fair introduced hamburger and hot dog buns and ice cream cones to the public.
The Dr Pepper Company is the oldest major manufacturer of soft drink concentrates and syrups in the United States.

Dr Pepper Asks Texas To Make Them The Official State Soft Drink
According to Geek.com, Dr. Pepper wants to become the official soft drink of Texas. Representatives of the soda company have sent in a formal petition to Texas officials. Dr. Pepper was created in 1885 in Waco, Texas and now wants the state to recognize them as their official drink. The company started a petition on Change.org and have already garnered 1,000 signatures. Part of their campaign will feature a collection of special-edition, Texas-inspired bottle labels.
